This guy would be far more dangerous as president than Trump. Control education ad the courts, power 101.

Florida bill would give DeSantis more power over state universities and ban gender studies

A new bill overhauling Florida universities to match Gov. Ron DeSantis’ vision for higher education would shift power at state schools into the hands of the Republican leader’s political appointees and ban gender studies as a field of study.

The legislation, filed this week, would also require that general education courses at state colleges and universities “promote the values necessary to preserve the constitutional republic” and cannot define American history “as contrary to the creation of a new nation based on universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence.” It would proh

The bill would put all hiring decisions in the hands of each universities’ board of trustees, a body selected entirely by the governor and his appointees, with input from the school’s president. A board of trustee member could also call for the review of any faculty member’s tenure.

So, any classes that teach aspects of US history that don't live up to the ideals of the Declaration of independence are illegal? That line about "All men being created equal" and having the right to "life and liberty" is in the DoI, so I assume that teaching any aspect of historical government endorsed slavery will now be illegal in Florida?

No chance for abuse there...

No, that would be entirely legal. What would be against the policy would be to say, or even imply, that endorsing slavery was an action contrary to the creation of a new nation based on universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence.

The bill will place a real chill on academics in Florida state universities. My guess is that many of their leading professors i will leave for greener pastures. I think this outflow will be concentrated in the liberal arts and social sciences. The institutions will either have to try to raise compensation to get the better academics or slide down in overall quality.

Seeing Disney and FL Republicans fight is like watching Floyd Mayweather duke it out with Logan Paul. I don't like either of them so both getting the crap beat out of them is delightful. Regrettably no matter who wins every spectator is a loser whether they paid to see the fight or not.

If nothing else, it will make businesses think twice about locating in Florida. "Come work for X Corp! Sunshine! Oceans! Lousy schools and intolerance! Plus when the hurricane hits, don't expect state aid, because spending taxpayer money on stuff you need is for pussies!"

Did notice back in the Super Bowl, the Disney commercial was having a member of the winning team say “I’m going to Disneyland”, not Disneyworld like they did every other year

Except this isn't Mayweather v Paul, that was the Great White Hype. This is fascism. Disney didn't even say a peep prior to the anti-education education bill being passed. Then Disney piped up after it was too late, and DeSantis started an attack on the company, like he was a dictator. It is extremely disturbing the legislation getting passed in Florida. Granted, Disney has an out, they can move decent size chunks of their company out of the state. And if DeSantis goes too far... why not just leave altogether. 49 other states would kill to get a displaced Disneyworld. Granted, there wouldn't be many options available.

May favorite Super Bowl commercial was the one against Tesla's "Full Self Driving". I'm sure DeSantis didn't like that one because Elon has already given DeSantis his endorsement if he runs for president. In other news, Disney's former special district will be run like North Korea with DeSantis playing Kim.

Ron DeSantis is a “tyrant”, the far-right activist Laura Loomer said, after she and other Trump supporters were barred from a book signing staged by the Florida governor.

“They told me to say anybody wearing Trump has to go right now,” a uniformed officer said in video posted online by Loomer, a failed congressional candidate, conspiracy theorist, Islamophobe and rightwing political gadfly.

“DeSantis people are in there telling me to come out to tell you guys not to be here while he’s here,” the officer said.

Loomer said: “Governor DeSantis, he always talks about how he’s in favour of free speech. So do we have a first amendment right to be here, to rally in support of President Trump?”

“Right you do,” said the officer. “But not now.”

That's so silly if true. It's like Pepsi complaining about someone wearing a Coca Cola shirt while purchasing one of their poisonous cans. Wouldn't that make the seller look even better? Like "Aha! Your customers are coming to me now see?!"

Meanwhile in "Don't sprain your eyes", Florida representative proposes bill that require reporting to the State if you blog about Florida Government and make any money from it.

Sen. Jason Brodeur's bill, titled "Information Dissemination," would also require bloggers to disclose who's paying them for their posts about certain elected officials and how much.

"If a blogger posts to a blog about an elected state officer and receives, or will receive, compensation for that post, the blogger must register" with the appropriate office within five days of the post, the legislation says.

It defines "elected state officer" as "the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, a Cabinet officer, or any member of the Legislature."

Failing to register would result in a fine of $25 a day, and the penalty would be capped at $2,500 per posting, NBC affiliate WFLA of Tampa reported.

The bill says the bloggers' reports to the state "must include" the "individual or entity that compensated the blogger for the blog post, and "the amount of compensation received from the individual or entity."

I really wish that the founders had passed a law allowing SOME mechanism for stripping a state of statehood and downgrading them to a territory

I wish people didn't get rage boners every time someone says the word "socialist".

I really wish that 21st century Americans recognized that we don't have states any more. We've got provinces.

The original colonies/states were pretty darn sovereign. The federal government was weak and limited by design. But that was then and this is now.

Three of the biggest issues in the 2016 presidential election were federal policies concerning income tax, health care, and immigration. None of those issues even existed in 1800.

ETA ~ Here's a fun example.
Back in the 50s, the federal government instituted a socialist transportation system. It was called "freeways", although obviously they were anything but free. They were paid for by taxpayers who had no say in the matter. Whether they used them or not, individual taxpayers had to pay.

In the 70s, the government used this power to enforce 55 speed limits. "States" that didn't adopt and enforce the speed limits would be cut off from federal funding, but still had to pay the taxes. Or else the government would show up with guns and take your house and stuff.
It was totally socialist. And still is.

Immigration and socialism made America Great in the first place.

I generally agree with you here and that should tell us all something about how politically left academics has become. In a better world I would think academics would be politically neutral.

For whatever its worth, right now, people are moving to Florida from the liberal states so they must like DeSantis a lot.
