Don't cuss me but what if....

If he won in 2024 I would think it likely that we would no longer be a democracy.

Almost by definition; Trump is a kleptocrat.
The thing is I think that if the QOP gets the presidency that they'll probably do enough damage to our system that elections cease to mean too much.

Kleptocrat simply means he'll try to take. I'm saying that the QOP has enough backing they'll succeed, unlike last time.

IF they can create similar conditions.
I’m hoping there are people in the current administration anticipating and ready to counter any violent uprising, but with the current SCOTUS a top-down, non-violent usurpation of power is more likely.

Yeah, I expect it to be non-violent or minimally violent.

I expect it to be non-violent or minimally violent.

Generalized violence will increase dramatically, but won’t be reported if committed/ instigated by agents of the state. So most folk will feel safe and secure.
(NOT!)

It’s a serious question as to what would happen. The founders did surprisingly anticipate this, so it might well depend on congressional and senatorial elections as well next year, and how courts would react.

Right now, OPM is poised to implement a new rule that would effectively prevent Trump from converting the bureaucracy into his personal waffen SS. If democrats control the house and senate, then he won’t be able to dictate the legislation he’d like. The courts, even those dominated by Republicans aren’t going to rubber stamp anything he wants to do. Even Amy, Neil and Brett ruled against his stupid lawsuits to stop the election results.

Governors, even Republicans, won’t always be able to kowtow to him.

It will still be bad though.

ETA: if all things stay the same, he will win most likely. Things won’t stay the same. I wouldn’t be very surprised if neither Trump nor Biden were on the ticket.

@AdamWho predicted a while back that neither would make the cut. He may have been prescient but it’s a bit early to tell.

If Trump is not on the ticket, will the GQP nominate a trumpsucker so Cheato can keep running the government like he’s been running the House of Reps? Will RW voters be willing to vote for a blatant butt-kisser? They certainly cooled quickly on Twinkletoes/Puddin’Fingers. I suspect that without Orange Jabba, any candidate they come up with is doomed.

Stunned today that Haley dropped out. But I suspect that Desatan will step to the throne with tRump’s backing. They’ll kiss and make up. Then when he’s elected, which will happen, cause Biden’s too old and Kamala sucks as a candidate, he will pardon tRump, and appoint him as his top advisor.

Nikki Haley is still running. Will Hurd dropped out and endorsed Haley. George Will urged Tim Scott to drop out and endorse Nikki Haley.

I think the Republican crisis is coming to a head.

They are going to make a clean break with the crazies and get rid of Trump.

There isn't an upside to Trump or the maga crazies. It is all downside from here if they don't.

Nikki Haley is fucked the moment Trump and his supporters can pronounce her full name. I mean, he still goes on about Barrack Hussein Obama every chance he gets. Republicans as a rule don't like voting for someone whose first name...shall we say isn't likely to be used in a Charlie Brown cartoon from the 60s.

You are predicting a turn toward sanity for this feckless, roiling party. But what are some predictors?

Pretty much this.
I would love to see a return to the sane, pre-Teaparty, GOP. But I see no reason to think the GOP has hit bottom yet. Tom

You could have posted that on this day in 2016.

If they were capable of recognising the damage they are doing to themselves, they would have done so long ago.

It's certainly all downside; But having jumped without a parachute, they aren't capable of changing their trajectory anymore. It won't change until the splat.

It isn't the ideological Republicans that will force the change, it is the money people.

If a Republican can get by with ideological, small donors there is no motivation to change. But I don't think that is the case for most, even in "safe seats"

Yeah, money talks and bullshit walks. The problem is that the monied interests don't care that much about the crazies. They're fine with them as long as they get to keep their taxes low and their regulations the way they like them. If it means making a deal with the devil, they don't give a shit. Right now, I just don't see the monied interests walking away from their commitment to the Republicans. they may, in fact, be begetting the crazies right now - using them to vote against their own economic interests such as minimum wage hikes, etc.

But I am reminded of the monied interests that put Hitler in power thinking that they could control him.

The parallels between Hitler and Trump really are strong.

The very big difference of course is that Hitler was a sincere white supremacist and a sincere hater of other ethnicities. He was a very "moral" man, but it was a morality of evil. Trump-45, on the other hand, was an insipid narcissist with no morality, good or evil. He just followed QOPAnon's prejudices in order to gain power for his petty grifting. His whole Presidency was an utterly disgusting joke; that so many Americans fall for this joke makes one question the future of America or even Homo sapiens more generally.

But that was Trump-45. The worry now is Trump-47. The malignant narcissist is increasingly deranged and with a decreasing life-span will be less interested in grifting a few more millions than in wreaking vengeance. Trump-45's cabinet had at least 2 criminals, and at least 3 others who were hopelessly incompetent, but there was some adult supervision. Trump-47 will surround himself entirely with faithful lackeys. He's already announced he will fire droves of non-political government workers to replace them with thugs drawn from the Ilk of Hatred.

Expect Trump-47 to act quickly to begin the firing of "disloyal" government workers. The idea that competent careerists will prevent Trump excesses may fail, as the Ilk pushes to acquire absolute power quickly. Rich cronies will get so much government largesse that the country's dreams will be sapped, and awakening will come too late. Expect Trump-47 to share America's secrets with foreign enemies, if only out of spite.

Oddsmakers show Trump electoral victory in November to be the most likely outcome. If the Democrat gets 270+ ev's, it will be in a very close race, and the GOP Cheat Machine will go into overdrive -- several of the key swing states are controlled by QOPAnon. If the cheating fails, hate-filled deplorables will take to the streets with guns.

Even a few sane Republican leaders might be able to prevent this. But even the best of the lot are mesmerized by QOPAnon lies, care nothing for their country and just want to maximize sales of their latest book.

How does it feel to live in interesting times?
