Favorite anti-love songs

Nick Cave is good for this kind of thing. A good part of his catalog could be classified as anti-love songs.

As well as "Henry Lee" (with PJ Harvey) from the same album (Murder Ballads).

This is a great song and an excellent video. Good chemistry. (It reminds me of Leonard Cohen)

Janis Joplin, One Night Stand: 'Just because we loved tonight, please don't think it's gonna stay that way -- Don't you know, that you're nothin' more than a one night stand? Tomorrow I'll be on my way, and you can catch me if you can!'

Did anyone mention Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, How Can I Miss You If You Won't Go Away? Great band, great song.

Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised someone else mentioned this. This song was my first thought, so I search the thread to make sure no one had mentioned it. Sadly, Dan Hicks did go away, and I miss him. Saw him (with and without his Hot Licks) about a dozen times over the last 25 years.

Here's a link to the song and some of they lyrics below for those who are unfamiliar

Your never ending presence really cramps my style
I dream that it won't always be the same
At first I was attracted but after a while
Have you ever heard of the hard-to-get game?

How can I miss you when you won't go away?
Keep telling you day after day
But you won't listen, you always stay and stay
How can I miss you when you won't go away?

Perhaps not a world class composition, but freakin' hilarious is "Night after Night" by Lenny and the Squigtones from Laverne and Shirley.

Apparently they were good friends before being on the show and used to play these songs at parties. There were some plans to give them their own spin off show and they even appeared on American Bandstand with Christopher Guest as the guitarist. So, they were basically a beta version of Spinal Tap.

Kenny Rogers - Lucille

"You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille.
With four hungry children and a crop in the field.
I've had some bad times, lived through some sad times, but this time your hurtin' won't heal.
You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille."

Loretta and Conway, You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly... (not the best fit for this list, because the final message is that they realize they're a couple of schlumps. but they complement each other. Sort of a Roseanne show anthem. Still a lot of fun and a non-traditional take on love 'n' marriage.)

This is the end of us
You'll never hear my voice again
You are ridiculous
With your imaginary friends
All that I want
Is for you to come to ruin
All that I want
Is for you to come to ruin
All that I want
Is for you to come crawling back

So it's better my sweet
That we hover like bees
'Cause there's no sure footing
No love, I believe

"Two out of three aint' bad" -Meatloaf (but written by Jim Steinman who wrote most of Meatloaf's songs).

"And all I can do is keep on telling you
I want you, I need you
But-there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you
Now don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad
Now don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad

You'll never find your gold on a sandy beach
You'll never drill for oil on a city street
I know you're looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks
But there ain't no Coup de Ville hiding at the bottom
Of a Cracker Jack box"

Steinman tells a story about a. A friend asking him why he can never write a simple love song. Elvis' "I want you, I need you, I love you." comes on and the friend says, "See something like that!". He went home and wrote this song.

I'm not in love
So don't forget it
It's just a silly phase I'm going through
And just because
I call you up
Don't get me wrong, don't think you've got it made
I'm not in love, no no, it's because

I like to see you
But then again
That doesn't mean you mean that much to me
So if I call you
Don't make a fuss
Don't tell your friends about the two of us
I'm not in love, no no, it's because

I keep your picture
Upon the wall
It hides a nasty stain that's lying there
So don't you ask me
To give it back
I know you know it doesn't mean that much to me
I'm not in love, no no, it's because

Ooh you'll wait a long time for me
Ooh you'll wait a long time
Ooh you'll wait a long time for me
Ooh you'll wait a long time

I'm not in love
So don't forget it
It's just a silly phase I'm going through
And just because I call you up
Don't get me wrong, don't think you've got it made
I'm not in love
I'm not in love

This is a pro-love song--about being in denial as a self-protective mode

You're So Vain by Carley Simon.

Oh, you had me several years ago
When I was still naive
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and
You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
great pick

Seconded. The song is dead-nuts, and on target. Whoever the song is about, will think the song is about him. Apparently some college professor.
