The Guess Who - These Eyes

Sounds like it is about a great woman who disappointed him, and he can never experience love again.

<thread bumped, for some more oldies that carry the same theme --- cynicism about love>

The Temptations - Smiling Faces Sometimes

Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friend
Smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks within
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
The truth is in the eyes
Cause the eyes don't lie, amen

Remember a smile is just
A frown turned upside down
My friend let me tell you
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth, uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof

Beware, beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
I'm telling you beware
Beware of the pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Jealousy (jealousy)
Misery (misery)
Envy I tell you, you can't see behind smiling faces
Smiling faces sometimes they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
(Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes)
(Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes)

I'm telling you beware, beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
Listen to me now, beware
Beware of that pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Your enemy won't do you no harm
Cause you'll know where he's coming from
Don't let the handshake and the smile fool ya
Take my advice I'm only try' to school ya

The Monkees - Steppin' Stone

I'm not your steppin' stone
I'm not your steppin' stone

You're trying to make your mark in society
You're using all the tricks that you used on me
You're reading all them high-fashion magazines
The clothes you're wearing, girl, are causing public scenes

I said I'm not your steppin' stone
I'm not your steppin' stone
No!

Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
I'm not your steppin' stone
No!

When I first met you, girl, you didn't have no shoes
But now you're walking 'round like you're front-page news
You been awful careful 'bout the friends you choose
But you won't find my name in your book of who's whos

I said
I'm not your steppin' stone
(No girl , not me)
I'm not your steppin' stone
No!

Not your steppin' stone
I'm not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
No, girl, I'm not you're steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone

The Supremes-You Keep Me Hangin' On

Set me free, why don't cha, baby
Get out my life, why don't cha, baby
'Cause you don't really love me
You just keep me hangin' on
You don't really need me
But you keep me hangin' on

Why do you keep a comin' around
Playin' with my heart?
Why don't you get out of my life
And let me make a new start?
Let me get over you
The way you've gotten over me, hey

Set me free, why don't cha, baby
Let me be, why don't cha, baby
'Cause you don't really love me
You just keep me hangin' on
Now you don't really want me
You just keep me hangin' on

You say although we broke up
You still wanna be just friends
But how can we still be friends
When seein' you only breaks my heart again?
And there ain't nothin' I can do about it

Woo, set me free, why don't cha, baby
Woo, get outta my life, why don't cha, baby
Set me free, why don't cha, baby
Get outta my life, why don't cha, baby

You claim you still care for me
But your heart and soul needs to be free
Now that you've got your freedom
You wanna still hold on to me
You don't want me for yourself
So let me find somebody else, hey

Why don't you be a man about it
And set me free?
Now if you don't care a thing about me
You're just using me

Go on, get out, get out of my life
And let me sleep at night
'Cause you don't really love me
You just keep me hangin' on

Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go

Baby, baby
Baby don't leave me
Ooh, please don't leave me
All by myself

I've got this burning, burning
Yearning feelin' inside me
Ooh, deep inside me
And it hurts so bad

You came into my heart
So tenderly
With a burning love
That stings like a bee

Now that I surrender
So helplessly
You now wanna leave
Ooh, you wanna leave me

Ooh, baby, baby
Where did our love go?
Ooh, don't you want me
Don't you want me no more
Ooh, baby

Baby, baby
Where did our love go
And all your promisses
Of a love forever more

I've got this burning, burning
Yearning feelin' inside me
Ooh, deep inside me
And it hurts so bad

Before you won my heart
You were a perfect guy
But now that you got me
You wanna leave me behind
(Baby, baby) ooh baby

Baby, baby don't leave me
Ooh, please don't leave me
All by myself

Ooh, baby, baby
Where did our love go?

Diana Ross & The Supremes: Reflections

Through the mirror of my mind
Time after time
I see reflections of you and me

Reflections of
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me

Oh, I'm all alone now
No love to shield me
Trapped in a world
That's a distorted reality

Happiness you took from me
And left me alone
With only memories

Through the mirror of my mind
Through these tears that I'm crying
Reflects a hurt I can't control
'Cause although you're gone
I keep holding on
To the happy times
Oh, when you were mine

As I peer through the window
Of lost time
Looking over my yesterdays
And all the love I gave all in vain
(All the love) All the love
That I've wasted
(All the tears) All the tears
That I've tasted
All in vain

Through the hollow of my tears
I see a dream that's lost
From the hurt
That you have caused

Everywhere I turn
Seems like everything I see
Reflects the love that used to be

In you I put
All my faith and trust
Right before my eyes
My world has turned to dust

After all the nights
I sat alone and wept
Just a handful of promises
Are all that's left of loving you

Reflections of
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me

In you I put
All my faith and trust
Right before my eyes
My world has turned to dust...

The counterpart to You Oughta Know:

Sometimes, tell me, while she’s touching you
Just by mistake, accidentally do you say my name?

Now you call me a bitch in heat and
I call you a liar
And we'll throw stones until we're dead

Most of the ones that came to my mind have been mentioned. But no Love Hurts by Nazareth? One of the prettiest rock songs ever recorded. Love is just a lie, made to make you blue.

Also, Drawing Board by George Ezra. He's thinking up ways to murder his ex. :)

I'll fill your pillow case up with snakes
The man eating kind
Though you call your self a woman
I doubt that they would mind

The song that popped into my head when I saw thread title is the answer to a different, opposite, question. The singer has not been turned off from love by a lover's rejection.

Many songs lament the loss of an irreplaceable lover, as though the singer will remain sadly celibate if the irreplaceable lover never returns. MacArthur Park is an antidote to that sentiment:

There will be another song for me
For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me
Looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves in my life
You'll still be the one

I will take my life into my hands
And I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes
And I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow
Like rivers through the sky
And after all the loves of my life
Oh after all the loves in my life
I'll be thinking of you
And wondering why
She will be "the one" forever, but this singer definitely plans on being worshiped by a 2nd- or 3rd-best lover. "There will be another dream for me; someone will bring it."

This may be as delicate and wistful an anti-love song as there is, but I still think it qualifies: the decision was made to choose the path other than love.

Incidentally, this is also a song like One More Try, Abraham, Martin, and John, Fortunate Son, Just Like Heaven and The Emperor's New Clothes: the title only appears in the last line of the song.

Mercy what I won't give
To have the things which mean the most not to mean the things I miss
Unforgiving the choice still is
The language or the kiss

En Vogue - My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)

No, you're never gonna get it
Never ever gonna get it (no, not this time)
No, you're never gonna get it (my love)
Never ever gonna get it

No, you're never gonna get it
Never ever gonna get it (no, not this time)
No, you're never gonna get it (my love)
Never ever gonna get it

I remember how it used to be
You never was this nice, you can't fool me
Now you talkin' like you made a change
The more you talk, the more things sound the same
What makes you think you can just walk back into her life
Without a good fight? Oh
I just sit back and watch you make a fool of yourself
Cuz you're just wasting your time, oh

No, you're never gonna get it (not this time)
Never ever gonna get it (my lovin')
No, you're never gonna get it (had your chance to make a change)
Never ever gonna get it

No, you're never gonna get it (not this time)
Never ever gonna get it (my lovin')
No, you're never gonna get it (had your chance to make a change)
Never ever gonna get it

Now you promise me the moon and stars
Save your breath, you won't get very far
Gave you many chances to make change
The only thing you changed was love to hate
It doesn't matter what you do or what you say
She doesn't love you, no way
Maybe next time you'll give your woman a little respect
So you won't be hearing her say, No way

No, you're never gonna get it (not this time)
Never ever gonna get it (my lovin')
No, you're never gonna get it (had your chance to make a change)
Never ever gonna get it

No, you're never gonna get it (not this time)
Never ever gonna get it (my lovin')
No, you're never gonna get it (had your chance to make a change)
Never ever gonna get it

No, you're never gonna get it (not this time)
Never ever gonna get it (my lovin')
No, you're never gonna get it (had your chance to make a change)
Never ever gonna get it

No, you're never gonna get it (not this time)
Never ever gonna get it (my lovin')
No, you're never gonna get it (had your chance to make a change)
Never ever gonna get it

Doesn't matter what you do or what you say
She don't love you, no way
Maybe next time you'll give your woman a little respect
So you won't be hearing her say, No way

Never gonna get it, never gonna get it
Never gonna get it, never gonna get it
Never gonna get it, never gonna get it
Never gonna get it (whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa)
Never gonna get it, never gonna get it
Never gonna get it, never gonna get it
Never gonna get it, never gonna get it
Never gonna get it, never get it

No, you're never gonna get it (sweet lovin')
Never ever gonna get it (sweet lovin')
No, you're never gonna get it (my lovin')
Never ever gonna get it (my lovin')
No, you're never gonna get it (sweet lovin')
Never ever gonna get it (my lovin')
No, you're never gonna get it (sweet lovin')
Never ever gonna get it (my lovin')
