Gerrymandering... it just is now.

Gerrymandering for what ever reason is wrong and immoral, no matter who does it. Republican, Democrar, Labour, Liberal etc.
So what do y'all do in Oz to decide electoral boundaries?

Which is why some of our electoral areas a massive area wise, and others only a few suburbs!
Based on population, not volume of land.
Yes, counting eligible noses.

Really need to get more of your citizens to vote.
^ Case in point. Pretend that this is your exclusive insight, while virtually every “lib” you decry has been beating that drum for years.
Never claimed that it was an exclusive insight. Just obvious (of course that is the problem).

So when/what are you going to do something about it?

A necessary first step is to regain control of the Congress from the evil-doers while there's still a chance that their fascist take-over isn't permanent. Gerrymandering by California and other "blue" states just MIGHT be a way to do that. With the criminals setting our house on fire and death imminent, we "say a prayer" and toss our last grenade at them. We're pacifists but want to save lives. The alternative is to kiss the ass of Trump and the Fascists and to wave a fond goodbye to American democracy.

Unclear why you have trouble understanding that.
Oh I have no trouble understanding it.
The trouble occurs when you give persons in certain positions i.e. pollies, they can be most reluctant to hand back that power. They would want to keep it "just in case of trouble".
Unless they are in the mould of Cincinnatus they will not hand that power back willingly or easily. There would be very few pollies in the US (as in Aust.) like that.

I vote every chance I get, local, state and commonwealth.
I constantly tell others voting is a precious gift - don't throw it away (unlike the Brits and Yanks)
I have been an electoral offical at state and commonwealth elections for > 30 years.
And I support the mandatory part of getting our names marked off the electoral roll.
I did not create the voting laws but I will maintain them.
Well aren’t you the very prince of propriety!
Telling people to vote is so on point! I should have thought of that.

Oh wait! I’ve BEEN doing that NONSTOP! Why do they listen to you but not to me?
Oh, right, you are successful because
THE LAW REQUIRES VOTING WHERE YOU ARE.
I am pleased that we in Oz can offer you Yanks a possible solution. No need to thank us.
Go ahead and keep playing holier than thou, because you (collectively) ARE a more benign entity than what the USA has become.

What is the penalty for failure to cast a ballot? (You probably told me already, but I forgot.)
You have to watch a one-hour loop of Trump doing his 'chubby grandpa at the wedding' dance moves to a soundtrack of Lee Greenwood singing God Bless the USA.

That’s it. It’s over.
Cruel and unusual punishment has become the norm.

There isn't one.

You can be fined for not getting your name marked off as having received a ballot paper; Currently that 'administrative penalty' is $20.

Once you have your ballot paper, you can do with it as you please. It's a secret ballot, so nobody will ever know you didn't vote if you drop it into the ballot box unmarked, or defaced; Or for that matter, if you drop it in a bin, or take it home with you, though the election workers prefer you to dispose of it into the ballot box even if you choose not to vote, because it saves them having to search for it when the "ballots issued" doesn't match "ballots counted" at the end of the preliminary count.
