GOP 'protecting' our schools

https://turnto10.com/news/local/bill-would-prohibit-teaching-of-divisive-concepts-in-rhode-island

The bill calls for an outright ban on so-called divisive concepts, defined as anything that implies the state or country is fundamentally racist or sexist or blames a specific race for a societal issue.

Why would anyone oppose this?

So we can't teach about slavery?

Is this teaching about slavery?

The Miseducation of America’s Elites

“They are making my son feel like a racist because of the pigmentation of his skin,” one mother says. Another poses a question to the group: “How does focusing a spotlight on race fix how kids talk to one another? Why can’t they just all be Wolverines?” (Harvard-Westlake has declined to comment.)

Three thousand miles away, in Los Angeles, another prep-school teacher says something similar. “It teaches people who have so much to see themselves as victims. They think they are suffering oppression at one of the poshest schools in the country.”

It seems to be working. One Los Angeles mother tells me that her son was recently told by his friend, who is black, that he is “inherently oppressed.” She was incredulous. “This kid is a multimillionaire,” she said. “My son said to his friend: ‘Explain it to me. Why do you feel oppressed? What has anyone done to make you feel less?’ And the friend said: ‘The color of my skin.’ This blew my mind.”

One teacher told me that he was asked to teach an antiracist curriculum that included a “pyramid” of white supremacy. At the top was genocide. At the bottom was “two sides to every story.”

“‘Two sides to every story,’” he said. “That was on the racist pyramid.”

A Brentwood parent says that she has tried, in small ways, to stand up to this. “They say I don’t understand because my skin is white.” Children like hers are being taught to give up ambition and yield positions that they might earn through hard work to others who are more marginalized. “My child is asking me obvious questions like: If I work really hard, shouldn’t I get rewarded?”

So the Chinese guy is punching the Jewish guy over the Titanic because...?
Um, because the Jewish guy punched him over Pearl Harbor. Duh.

Collective guilt is a stupid concept; collective guilt of ethnic groups is a stupid and racist concept; collective guilt of ethnic groups that aren't even the right ethnicity is a stupid, racist and lazy concept. Blaming the Chinese and the British respectively for a Japanese attack and an Afrikaner segregation policy are stupid, racist and lazy. If someone had instead blamed the ethnic Japanese and the ethnic Afrikaners respectively for Pearl Harbor and apartheid, that would have been merely stupid and racist -- just as blaming the white race for Jim Crow and redlining is stupid and racist. Blaming Trausti's ancestors for racist laws is likewise stupid and racist even though "ancestor of Trausti" isn't an ethnicity, because the only thing Politesse knew about them is they were white, and that was enough. The only character in this whole pathetic tale who isn't stupid and racist is the Chinese guy who punched the Jewish guy over the Titanic. That's because the Jewish guy was actually guilty: not collectively guilty, individually guilty. Which is to say, guilty. The only kind of guilty.

You know I'm not conservative, right?

It used to be that liberals advocated for the individual and eschewed judging people based on racial categories. Damn, how times have changed.

They're "fixing" it all right.
Both the religious right and the woke left have their idiocies.
Public schools should not be places for indoctrination into either religion or leftist ideology (i.e. things like "critical race theory").

This Country has completely lost its way, and now truly sucks.
We need another Sputnik moment. Maybe China landing on the Mars will motivate us to reject nonsense from both extremes of the horseshoe.

What a white supremacist, privileging the scientific method over other "ways of knowing" ...

Also, I wonder how a professor pushing this CRT nonsense would if xir students started showing up 20 min to reject white "rigid time schedules" ...

Two stories I've seen recently on bills republicans are trying to pass.

In Florida, a bill to protect 'ideological freedom', would require surveys of the political viewpoints of faculty and students.
Additionally, the legislation would permit students to secretly record professors for the purpose of reporting them, should they be under the impression their right to free speech is being violated.
Yea, like that is not intended to lead to pressuring schools to teach the 'correct' viewpoints, or at least not teach criticism of them.

The Reich Wing -- "We are too lazy these days to brainwash our own kids through homeschooling, so you do it for us."

You know I'm not conservative, right?

Nope.

Lol, okay. How exactly are you defining "conservative"? I hope it's not "disagrees with me on at least one hyper-progressive position".

I don't particularly care about your preferred "label" on way or the other. You can call youself whatever you like, if you think you can convince anyne. But trying to defend the historiographical propoganda of the 1960s is a conservative, not liberal, political project. So if I'm supposed to infer from this conversation that you are a "liberal", I don't see how or why I would come to that conclusion.

You and trausti are fighting a phantom position, and actual history instruction is getting caught in the crossfire.

That article is an interesting read. Seems to be a potential mix of teacher gone bananas and student/parent not understanding terminology, like the issue of "racism", the whole thing that racism is about using power to indoctrinate bigoted or race based standards in society. The word they are thinking of is "bigotry". Minorities can be bigoted, but it is hard for them to be racist because they lack the political or business power to create race related boundaries.

I find irony in "working class" being oppressive... as it was a term that was adopted by the oppressed working class back in the late 19th century.

What the hell does that have to do with history instruction?

The categorization of Emily as a conservative. Lefties have swung so far to the extreme that basic liberal notions of a generation ago are considered conservative. Like, for example, judging people as individuals and not based on their racial group.

Yeah, they're barely to the right of that commie extremist Dwight D. Eisenhower.
