I believe that in 1787, the militia was their concept of a police force. In 2016 we have a police force, however they no longer are comprised of civilian volunteers, but are another arm of the government, so they are no longer are our militia, as it were.

A militia 230 years ago was a necessity. HOA? Neighborhood watch? These militias were the foundation of the National Guard and puts a little "well regulated" into the mix.

The vast majority of such guns never kill anyone. That can hardly be their sole function!

That's like saying that the vast majority of fire extinguishers never put out a fire, so extinguishing fires isn't what they're made for. They're designed to do a certain task and the fact that most of them are never used for that task doesn't mean that's their function.

If the primary purpose of a device is to kill people, we might consider making it illegal.

The Islamic world is wrapped in an theological and economic war which has spilled out on the rest of us. It's part of current politics and governance.

The campaign to remove the longstanding symbol of Southern White Racism started long before Roof's atrocity. And that flag was flown by the state and local governments that are obstenibly for and by the people. To my knowledge, there are federal, state or local governments using Islamic symbols. As a matter of fact, that would probably be a violation of the separation of church and state. So there is no double standard since one campaign involved symbols flown by gov't while the other is symbols displayed by private people and institutions.
