Herman Cain dies from COVID

"The people", unfortunately, are not the electoral congress. The people's will, as expressed at the polls, was overturned in 2016. An absolutely stupid relic of the Founding Fathers' distrust of the common man.
which again comes back to that quote about all evil needs to flourish is for good men to do nothing.
whether it's stupid or not, relic or not, everyone in the apparatus of government rolled over and accepted it, as did the population of the US.

Did the Founding Fathers really distrust the intuitive judgment of the majority or were they rationalizing their own elitism?

I doubt it even occurred to them that they were doing it. They were worried about keeping the fragile peace between the colonies, not ensuring individual suffrage for everyone in the colonies. The very thought of giving the vote to everyone - slaves, women, children, visiting diplomats, everyone? - would have been absurd or infuriating to most of the framers, much as the modern slave class (the prison population) is perceived and treated in our modern situation when the issue of the eliminating felony disenfranchisement comes up.

It is freakishly contagious -- you read about people who got infected after wearing a mask in public and trying to stay distanced. But to do it Herman Cain's way... I have to wonder if his weeks of suffering changed his thinking. The fact that anyone would turn a crucial public health measure into an issue of personal liberty -- that's the height of petulant immaturity and delusion. And we're a country with the most advanced scientific institutions in the world. This Trump cabal should be swept away in about 13 weeks (if we have any luck at all), but at what a cost.

Blaming Trump is too easy. This is on the American people. There was never any chance that the US was going to be able to avoid this. There has been a concerted effort since, well, really Jimmy Carter, to demolish any idea of public solidarity. The "left" in the US, with a couple exceptions, is essentially a right-wing party. And the right is an extreme, ideological right-wing party.

People need to be governed. The blame lies with those who have for years said you do not have to be a responsible member of a civil society. That in the name of personal freedoms (and getting your vote), you can act irresponsibly. You can endanger and offend those around you. The immature have been allowed to act out and they are now spoiled children, unwilling whatsoever to play nice with others. For many of us, we do not need to be governed. Any such restrictions will go largely unnoticed or patriotically obliged because we are responsible. It is the actions we would take on our own without any prodding or dutifully upon recommendation. We do care for our neighbors. We are willing to suffer a little for the greater good of society.

So you are agreeing with me? Because I'm not really disagreeing with anything you've said.

The problem with this country is that our supposed smart people are still stupid.

I think in the US your smart people are quite smart. The issue is your stupid people are given air time.

I do not blame the American people. I blame politicians for being more concerned with retaining their seat rather than responsible governing. I blame the Electoral College who's duty it should be to stop Trumps from ever happening. I do not believe we should wholly entrust the running of the country to the "common man". The common man is the average man and I'd like to aim a bit higher than average. There is good reason why the Supreme Court does not ask the question, "What would the common man do?" No. They ask, "What would the reasonable man do?" Reasonable man is the neighbor you wish you had. Common man is the neighbor you're stuck with.

Louie Gohment already explained the cause: Masks.
And the reverend witch doctor explained the cure: exorcise.
And take lots and lots of hydroxychloroquine.

Covid is real, and it is not just like getting a cold. Wear that #$%!! mask!

Actually, for most people it’s less than that. Most people don’t even know they have had it. A virus so lethal you need to test to determine if you’ve got it.

You need the test to determine if you’re spreading it.

Also, “most people don’t know they have it” yet. The data has been clear that there are many many cases of long lasting damage. You didn’t know you had it, yet, but you may very well know you had it the next time you get a cold - for all you know.

150,000 people ARE DEAD.

But you just want to make jokes and cling to the belief that it’s not a big deal. Herman Cain thought that, too. Until he didnt think any more at all.

So did the rest of the nation, too. Guess there's gonna be some partying tonight!

That's a pretty horrible thing to say, even if you didn't agree with his politics.
Imagine if somebody wrote something similar in the John Lewis thread ...

From Covid ? Not really.

Who’s joking ? Not me. It is a big deal. But it’s only a big deal for a very small segment of society.

I'm baffled by anyone who thinks it should be acceptable to shoot someone in the face or gas them with toxic chemicals in order to clear a street - on the grounds, supposedly, of ensuring public safety - but also thinks it should be okay to knowingly enage in spreading about a highly contagious and potentially fatal or permanently disabling virus, supposedly because in that case individual rights and responsibilities trump public safety concerns.

How about those who think maintaining public safety by not allowing extremists to block highways (often for weeks on end) and at the same time think listening to public health officials, wearing masks and social distancing are really important too.

By the way, these "protesters" are not exactly socially distancing, are they?

It also leaves out thousands who died at home without any diagnosis, or anyone who died at the hospital before they could be tested.
The actual numbers are probably much higher. And ALL of them could - and going forward, many will - be chalked up to "respiratory failure", "pneumonia", "hyperactive immune response" and other so-called "co-morbidity factors" that would not be lethal, absent COVID-19.
But keep up the Happy Talk - I'm sure Derec can help you.
