How has the overthrow of the Assad regime affected Putin? Putin's misguided adventure into Ukraine, the enormous waste of resources, and the resulting sanctions are directly responsible for Russia being unable to further prop up the Assad regime. Russia has likely lost their bases in Syria and their influence in the Mideast, Mediterranean, and Africa. It was probably difficult to maintain this influence even with the bases, this has just made it much worse. Who gains here? Türkiye. Russia's and Iran's loss is Türkiye's gain in the Muslim world. Erdogan will take full advantage of the situation. And what do Russians with power and influence think of all this? No naval forces in the Black Sea to speak of. No projection of power in the Mediterranean Sea. Bogged down in conflict in Ukraine. The likelihood of rebuilding any naval forces anytime soon are very remote. Regardless of gains on the ground in Ukraine, it is without doubt Putin has deminished Russia's position on the world stage. This is how others of power and influence in Russia are seeing Putin.
Those of us paying attention to this thread have noted time and again all that Russia has lost due to Putin's decision to attack Ukraine, the loss of energy revenue from Europe, the expansion of NATO, the strengthening of neighboring militaries to name a few. And now the collapse of the Assad regime is another major loss. Putin better hope to god he still has a friend in Trump because other than that, selling Russian technology to Lil Kimmy for meat and munitions is all he's got. Even if Trump is able to put an end to this war, I see know celebration in Russia. There is no victory here, just quiet acceptance of Putin's legacy. Maybe the next guy will try being friendly toward his neighbors.
