I Did Not Know

Did not know until today that One Nation is directly lifted from Hitler. I knew the similarity was remarkable, not that that was what she was aiming for.

Link?

[h=2]'One People, One Nation, One Leader'[/h] The cult of the leader, which surpassed any normal level of trust in political leadership, is central to an understanding of the appeal of National Socialism. It was undoubtedly the most important theme running through Nazi propaganda.

I do remember President G.H.W. Bush using the phrase "New World Order" until somebody with some brains told him what that meant as used by Hitler.

This is a "I Did Not Know" that you will have to work for.

There is a safety crash bar that is mounted on the back end of commercial trucks. It is nicknamed after a famous actress. Who is the actress and why is it nicknamed after her?

Bell Peppers can be bought in quantity when they're on sale at the grocery, chopped/diced, then frozen, to be used as needed, with no loss of taste.

Same with onions.

But they defrost mushy, no longer crisp at all.

I cook with them, so that isn't an issue. If I was eating them raw, you're right: I would use a fresh Bell-Pepper/Onion for that.

I too cook with them, but I still want them to retain some of their crispness. Sauteing in a little butter does that if they;re fresh.

That would be the Mansfield Bar, which prevents rear under-ride collisions, in which the car's front end passes beneath the truck, causing the collision between truck and car to occur at head height for passengers in the car. Even at low speeds, such a collision is often fatal, and this was the cause of death for the eponymous Jayne Mansfield.

We have a winner. I had a feeling you would be the one to answer that.

I did not know pineapples grew on the ground until I went to Maui.

Yeah, my dad was the same - he came to visit me here in Australia, and we were driving through the Glasshouse Mountains, and asked what they were farming in the fields along the highway. I said it is mostly pineapples in this area, and he said "Where are they?!"

It took me a while to realise that he was looking for the trees.

In hindsight, I should have offered to take him digging for avocados the next day :D

I did not know that there is "conservative" vs. (presumably) "non-conservative" logic. https://talkfreethought.org/showthread.php?22171-Using-%E2%80%98conservative-logic%E2%80%99-to-defend-evil/page3

Silly me thought that logic was independent of a user's politics, world view or <insert favourite adverb, pejorative or adjective here>.

But did you know about conservative and non-conservative forces? Gravity, Coloumb force etc. are conservative, while friction is presumably progressive. :D

To clarify, he actually says "Ein Volk, ein Reich, Deutschland", and "ein volk" could be translated as either "one people" or "one nation". The title of the video is misleading. The slogan was usually "Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer".

In her maiden speech to parliament in 1996, Pauline Hanson said “To survive in peace and harmony, united and strong, we must have one people, one nation, one flag.” I wonder where she got the idea for that? Recently a former One Nation senator, Fraser Anning, used the phrase "final solution" to call for an end to Muslim immigration and a return to the White Australia policy. Anning says it was "inadvertent".

Even Germany, paranoid as they are about Nazis, used "Wir sind ein Volk" ("we are one people/nation") as a slogan for the Reunification.

The "spine" of a book refers to the fact that when sheep skins were being used for paper in the form of parchment the pages were folded along the center line of the skin, which coincided with the location of the animal's spinal column.

I did not know that Helen Reddy was Australian.

I hear there's other people there, too. I mean besides guys named Bruce.

Cool thread idea.

Mine: I did not know that commercial meat turkeys were so adorably friendly, like little puppies.

Is that before or after they are in the freezer?

LOL this one before. Now it’s in the freezer and it is very docile and quiet, not like a puppy.

I did not know that the Oval Office was NOT behind that curved window on the back of the White House.
Turns out it is the corner office in the square West Wing building.

1. Tomatoes do not grow on trees (the tomato oak) and do not have to be harvested by ladder. Who knew?
2. No part of the Toilet Duck is actually made from ducks.
3. Hot 40s actress Lizabeth Scott was born Emma Matzo. Emma Matzo!! And she gave up her birth name? She could have headlined in the Catskills for decades with that name.

Yuccas have a really sweet, Jasmine-like scent. I have lived wit a huge one for 20 years and only just cottoned on.
