There are a number of strips that I think run only as a sort of security blanket. One expects to read Blondie, Garfield, Hagar, Beetle Bailey each day. It's somewhere between ritual and tradition to find and read the strip, which assures us that all is right with the world.
When a paper starts to fuck with the layout of the comics page, they get all sorts of letters, none of which defend the abandoned strips as hilarious, or cutting-edge topical, or even interesting. It's all about 'I read Marmaduke when my father was still alive and it's a shame that you pulled it!'
