Guys, women have been dealing with this level of…..scrutiny after being raped or beaten or murdered forever.
I recognize that some people truly have difficulty with the notion that those in power do wrong. It upsets the order of things: leaders are persons worthy of respect …and obedience. Trust. It’s really really hard when those we should be able to trust violate that trust. But sometimes that happens and sometimes we find out that the person(s) we had so much trust and faith in did something wrong. Well, we all do something wrong sometimes. I’m not talking about making a bad decision but also doing something that we know is wrong. Usually it’s fairly innocuous and easily forgiven and forgotten. We drive a little fast or don’t completely sort recyclables or shout at someone who did’t deserve it. We’re impatient when patience is called for. We all engage in that type of behavior and we all owe each other and ourselves grace for those small transgressions.
But sometimes those small transgressions are not so small and venture into real harm or illegality. Because they are also human, so our leaders, those in charge sometimes. Make errors in judgement or deliberately flair rules and laws. Because they have greater power and authority, the potential for greater, more far ranging harm exists with leaders and those in power. But they chose those positions of power and they have even greater responsibility to hold to rules and regulations and to not violate our trust.
It can be very hard to admit that those we have trusted have violated our trust. Sometimes we blame ourselves or other: Our parents only hit us because we were bad. They drink or drug because life is so stressful. Our partners just learned poor coping mechanisms from their f’d up families. If I had only been more attentive/richer/thinner/a better lover, my partner would not have cheated. And we rationalize our own behavior, too.
Because it’s really scary to admit that someone we care about deeply has violated our trust. What can we trust if we can’t trust Mommy or Daddy or beloved or the police or POTUS.
