Immigration Issues

Two week after my mom died we got a letter from Social Security demanding we send back to them her last SS payment of $105. My mom only paid into social security for about 4 years when I was in college. But they still tracked her down.

My wife took it and said she'd take care of it. If she did I don't know. But SS hasn't bothered us again.
Funeral directors are required to report deaths of SS recipients to the feds.

Of course that doesn't stop the guy hiding mom's dead body in the back room but that's a pretty rare occurrence and tends to stink up the house.
A better solution is to just bury the body(s) in the backyard, like this lady did. It was a big story in California after she was busted. You just can't trust those sweet old ladies!:

Why bury? That takes time and you need to find a place to put a hole.

In the clatter of the weight room, Johnson typed “Return to Nature” into his cellphone. Dozens of news reports appeared, details popping out in a blur.

Hundreds of bodies stacked on top of each other. Inches of body decomposition fluid. Swarms of bugs. Investigators traumatized. Governor declares state of emergency.
Ugh. Those people need to spend a long time in jail. I can't imagine being tasked to be on the "cleanup crew" at that warehouse. Its one thing to have to clean up a body that has decomposed for a few days, but hundreds that have been decomposing for years?
Well, the good news was, just coincidentally, after this case unfolded, the McRib reappeared at McDonalds.

If they are in the SS system they are most likely here legally which means they are targeting legal immigrants.
Could be overstays from temporary permission.

Taxpayer ID numbers are actually pretty easy to obtain. And they are the same as Social Security numbers except they don't qualify for work permission.
Why would you have an account and pay Social Security taxes if you are not allowed to work???

Hmmmmm. So, if I you're saying what I think you're saying:

McRib Is People!

An employer might not know the differance and hire you anyway.

Some people come and have work permits.

Indeed. The World Cup is currently on in the USA; Do you (@unapologetic) imagine that the players, trainers, physiotherapists, referees, photographers, and administrative staff from each team are exempt from paying taxes on their earnings while in the USA? Or that they all have to be on a path to residency and ultimately citizenship? They will all be going home in a few weeks.

The IRS taxes me on earnings from some shares I have, that are held in New York by Morgan Stanley on my behalf. Every quarter, I get a dividend; Every quarter I pay tax to the IRS; Every year they send me a 1040 form (which I give to my accountant, who magically turns it into a half-tonne of paperwork the upshot of which is that the Australian Taxation Office give me a credit so that I am not taxed by both countries on the same income).

In all the time that I have owned those shares, which were given to me as a "bonus" payment from my then employer, I have not once set foot in the USA. But the IRS still want to know exactly who I am, and to be sure that Uncle Sam gets every cent he is entitled to according to US law - because according to US law I am earning that money in the USA, even though I am thousands of miles away from the closest US territory*.

As a non-resident I don't have a Social Security number, and my guess is that the World Cup staff probably are not resident in the US for long enough to need one, either (though that is just a guess, I can't be bothered trying to find out what the exact rules are); But there are plenty of foreigners who are in the US for a year, or two, or five, who would presumably need an SS number and account despite having no intention of staying permanently.

* Google tells me that the nearest US territory to my location is the (uninhabited) Howland and Baker Islands, some 3,800km (2,360 miles) from here. The closest inhabited US territory is American Samoa, more than 4,000km away.

Social security taxes are due only on labor income. If all of your income is from investments, you do not pay SSI.

Taxpayer ID numbers.

For anyone with US-source income. Such as an interest-bearing bank account. You can either file a tax return or accept a flat 30% tax.

And you do not need work permission.

And some more on the atrocious conditions people are being detained in:

This is more of the same problem that has plagued jails for quite a while, just turned up even farther because they have less recourse in the courts.

Actually, Loren, a lot of employers, especially those who wish to comply with US labor laws, DO require work permits for non-permanent, non-citizen workers.

They will all be going home in a few weeks.
Some were not even allowed in.
Do you (@unapologetic) imagine that the players, trainers, ...
I'm sorry?
Were you expecting an answer?
All I know about that situation, is that some of them were not allowed in.
Whatever I said was just speculation. I don't feel the need to defend it.

Deaths of detainees, sure. Deaths of people released from detention? Not sure why you'd want that.

ICE dumped her on the streets with summer clothes in February. She died of hypothermia.

Her death has been ruled a homicide.

Read more carefully.

Investment (and interest) income. Does not need work permission. Does need a taxpayer ID number if you don't want to accept the flat 30% tax that would otherwise be imposed to the source.

Gets you a number and a card marked "not valid for employment".

FFS, Loren I KNOW as a fact that people here in temporary visas get work permits. I’ve seen them with my own eyes. I know people working on such temporary worker permits and their employers are absolutely stringent about them having appropriate work permits.

I am frankly sick of you treating me as though I am stupid.

You should not be allowed to be exempt from being put on ignore.

Two ICE agents harassed a poll worker on Election Day, demanding she remove social media posts they claimed threatened federal agents, according to Syracuse.com.

Paigelynne Gonyea, a poll worker in Syracuse, New York, said she received a phone call Tuesday from two ICE agents asking to meet with her. Not wanting to meet with them alone, she invited them into her workplace. “I’ve seen the news, especially in Minnesota,” she said. “And I didn’t want anything to happen to me at all.”

The ICE agents arrived with copies of her social media posts and driver’s license, and handed her a warning notice alerting her that they were investigating her for allegedly threatening ICE personnel. “They tried to scare me into signing it while I was working,” she said. The agents told her to “remove and/or discontinue” the behavior, according to the notice, which Gonyea shared on Instagram.

Gonyea frequently posts about immigration on social media. She believes the investigation was prompted after she shared a news article in January identifying Jonathan Ross, the ICE agent who shot and killed Renee Good. “I think today is a great day for Jonathan to be indicted,” she wrote in the caption.

Gonyea did not believe that her post or caption qualified as doxing. “I didn’t dox his personal information, such as address, phone number,” she told Syracuse.com.
The brownshirts have arrived.

There are temporary visas that permit work (for example, H and J visas). There are temporary visas that do not permit work (for example, B visas--although household employees can enter on a B1 accompanying their employer.)

Trump taps Lance Schroyer to lead ICE, agency at center of deportation campaign

President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he plans to nominate Lance Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper, to be the next director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a federal agency at the center of the administration’s mass deportation effort.

“I am very pleased to announce that I have nominated Lance Schroyer to be our next ICE Director,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Lance has firsthand experience getting Illegal Aliens OFF our streets and, just like ME and our Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin, he LOVES the men and women of ICE.”

Commenters aren't impressed and cite his lack of experience in running a major government department.

As usual... crickets from the usuals.
