January 6 Hearings Live

David Cicilline on Twitter: "Just passed 200 cosponsors on our article of impeachment. We are going to hold Donald Trump accountable for last week’s assault on the Capitol." / Twitter
then
Rashida Tlaib on Twitter: "Yes we are." / Twitter

Adam Klasfeld on Twitter: "Both of the men charged today—Larry Rendell Brock and Eric Gavelek Munchel—were seen carrying a white flex cuff and plastic restraints, respectively.

Their cases are being prosecuted by USAO of DC and the Counterterrorism Section of the DOJ’s National Security Division. (pic link)" / Twitter

I'd like to see them explain their possession of those zip-tie handcuffs.

Jacobs Chansley charged in Capitol riot - The Washington Post
Jacob Anthony Chansley / Jake Angeli / the "gentleman" in the furry horn helmet
Carrying a bullhorn and a flag-draped spear as he joined a mob of people who forced their way into the building, Chansley said in an hour-long, often rambling interview on Friday that he danced, sang and prayed there, drumming on the floor with his pole “to reclaim our nation.” He denied committing any violent acts.
He spoke as he was driving back to his Arizona home.
“I trust in God and I know that I didn’t do anything wrong,” he said. “And even if I was arrested, wasn’t Gandhi arrested a lot? Wasn’t Martin Luther King Jr. arrested a lot? Wasn’t Jesus arrested? I put my trust in God, not the government.”
He claimed that there was massive vote fraud and that he wanted to strike a blow against the "deep state". He said that what he did was not insurrection, but that the Founders would have done what he did.
Chansley said he had spent much of his life around Phoenix, following a spiritual path that led him from Catholicism to a mix of pagan and New Age-like religious beliefs. His shaman’s clothing reflected that, he said. The fur is that of a coyote, an animal that some Native American traditions have long regarded as a trickster.

“That’s why I wear the skin . . . because you cannot pull the wool over the eyes of an Angeli,” he said.

He is also heavily tattooed with Nordic insignia that Rolling Stone reported as having been adopted by far-right white nationalists.
"In his interview Friday, Chansley described a world run by dark, unaccountable forces and wove together historical facts with hoary conspiracy theories that have been repeatedly debunked."

Interesting thread from an antendee.

Not only was there a smaller police presence than usual, there were laxer rules.

There were also no clear crowd rules imposed for Stop the Steal like there were for all the other protests we have attended. All of the “liberal” protests of the last four years we attended had a long list of things you could not bring that were enforced at the Capitol.

At these protests, there were no poles or sticks, no backpacks, no weapons or body armor, etc. There were sometimes security check points to go through to get onto the mall or Capitol grounds.

None of these standard rules applied to Stop the Steal. There were poles and flags and backpacks and body armor EVERYWHERE. We didn’t see any guns or knives. But there were certainly people brandishing flag poles as if they were weapons.

Chicago Police Union President Says He’s ‘Sorry’ For Backing Capitol Rioters
As he came under fire from his union’s national leader, the president of Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police lodge on Friday apologized for a WBEZ interview in which he defended the supporters of President Trump who stormed the U.S. Capitol.

So he has no principles? Why be sorry for saying what you feel? Unless you were lying. Or maybe he’s claiming it was unthinking heat of passion outburst, but reading that article it didn’t come across that way? Maybe he’s just sorry he’ll have to face the consequences of his unpopular beliefs. And guess what, he won’t be jailed for saying what he did. That’s his real First Amendment protection.

For an antifa plant, he’s very convincing.

At least 3 men from Oregon protest appear to have joined insurrection at U.S. Capitol - OPB - "Many people who tried to storm the Oregon Capitol building on Dec. 21 did not face criminal charges. Two weeks later, some of them would support similar actions in Washington, D.C."

My wife and I attended the “Stop the Steal” Trump Insurrection on Wednesday (as observers, NOT participants) and there are FIVE big take-aways from what we witnessed and heard outside the Capitol that I'd like to share. (We took all the pictures below).

1) This insurrection wasn’t just redneck white supremacists and QAnon kooks. The people participating in, espousing, or cheering the violence cut across the different factions of the Republican Party and those factions were working in unison. Preppy looking "country club Republicans," well-dressed social conservatives, and white Evangelicals in Jesus caps were standing shoulder to shoulder with QAnon cultists, Second Amendment cosplay commandos, and doughy, hardcore white nationalists. We eavesdropped on conversations for hours and no one expressed the slightest concern about the large number of white supremacists and para-military spewing violent rhetoric. Even the man in the “Camp Auschwitz” sweatshirt wasn’t beyond the pale. They were all “patriots." I'm sure there were Republicans there who were horrified by what was happening. But the most common emotions we witnessed by nearly everyone were jubilation at the take over and anger at Democrats, Mike Pence, non-Trump supporting Republicans, and the Capitol Police.

2) There is no doubt the Capitol was left purposefully understaffed as far as law enforcement and there was no federal effort to provide support even as things turned very dark. This contrasts sharply with all of other major protests we have attended. A lot has been made of the contrast to the overwhelming police presence at Black Lives Matters protests in the fall, and this is certainly true. But there was also A LOT more federal law enforcement presence at every single previous protest we have attended in DC. Most of these protests involved tens of thousands of mostly white, middle-aged people (meaning race wasn’t the only reason for the disparate police presence). Even the March for Science had far more police for a non-partisan event featuring “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” By contrast, there was a tiny federal police presence at “Stop the Steal” despite weeks of promises of violence spread on social media by well-known far-right radicals, many of whom had long histories of inciting violence. When we arrived, the only forces present were the clearly overwhelmed Capitol Police. The only reinforcements that arrived were other Capitol Police. There were a handful of DC Metro police, but they had accompanied the ambulances to take away the injured. The only other federal law enforcement presence was an FBI Swat team of about eight officers who arrived to provide cover for the Capitol Fire and EMTs there to extract Ashli Babbitt, the QAnon radical who was shot inside the Capitol Building. Once the FBI team got Babbitt out, they left and no other federal officers arrived in the more than two hours that followed. The small Capitol Police force was left to deal with the chaos by themselves.

3) The Trump rioters only supported law enforcement as long as they believed law enforcement was supporting them. Rioters, many carrying Thin Blue Line flags, seemed convinced that the Capitol Police would turn against the government and join them. Numerous rioters shouted at the police, saying some version of “we had your back, now you need to have ours.” All of the Capitol officers we saw—Black, white, Latino, male, female—seemed alarmed by what was happening and continued to try to do their job faithfully. And the crowd reviled them for it. They booed the police and FBI swat team, calling them traitors and murderers. A man on the back Capitol steps ripped up a Thin Blue Line flag, the torn stripes fluttering down over a crowd briefly chanting “fuck the police.”

4) There were also no clear crowd rules imposed for Stop the Steal like there were for all the other protests we have attended.

5) These people are serious and they are going to keep escalating the violence until they are stopped by the force of law. There were many, many people there who were excited by the violence and proud and excited about the prospect of more violence. And it wasn’t just the white nationalists, Second Amendment radicals, and QAnon boneheads. I can’t adequately describe the blood lust we heard everywhere as we walked over the Capitol grounds, even from mild-mannered looking people. The most alarming part to me was the matter-of-fact, causal ways that people from all walks of life were talking about violence and even the execution of “traitors” in private conversations, like this was something normal that happened every day. I am convinced that if Congress doesn’t act to do something about this quickly, these people are going to keep going and the unrest and violence will get more widespread and more uncontrollable. This is a crisis. It’s real. It’s happening. It must be taken seriously.

Exactly.

Too little too late, in my book.

These I thought were interesting.

Some have said trump watched this all unfold on tv and acted quite gleeful.

Some of the people pushing the “it was antifa!!” conspiracy theory suggest one of the people in the capital had a hammer&sickle tattoo, an obvious communist. Actually looking at the picture shows it is a symbol from the video game Dishonored 2

I'm not good at internet stuff.

So I'll ask.

Can someone juxtapose the video of cops opening the gates with this one?
Tom

This guy was running from them not helping them. I haven't seen any real proof of cops helping them. The gate opening could just be because they didn't want to be overrun, they were vastly outnumbered. There is abundant evidence of oops putting themselves at risk to keep them out.

Amending this to add that I'm seeing reports of capitol police who are angry at fellow officers for being too lenient, or mad about that cop who took a selfie. Some rioters flashed police badges and expected them to join them. Also seen reports that some police department's are investigating their officers for participating.

I read a report that FDNY reported that some active and/or retired members participated.

I was going to post this earlier but never got to it. He talks about a little known portion of his life. Well worth a view.

Melissa (she/her) on Twitter: "In regards to the #CapitolCoup, I’m in a unique position. I monitored forums ahead of time and then was present for the coup itself.

These are my observations based on what I saw and the evidence that’s been collected so far. I reserve the right to adjust my analysis as needed." / Twitter

It wasn't a single organization, it wasn't no organization, but instead several small ones that didn't coordinate with each other very much. There were also "joyriders", those who considered the attack a fun outing.

Trump gave hints in his tweets, and his followers eagerly interpreted them.

They had not one, but several competing plans. Like besieging the Capitol building, storming it, provoking Civil War II, and citizen's arrest / hanging.

"Interestingly, some of the other Trump supporters in these forums noticed the shoddy planning."

They turned anti-cop, talking about killing cops if they had to.
Reviewing the footage from that day, it seems clear to me that this attempted coup should never have succeeded as much as it did.

It was botched from the beginning and only the repeated failures of the Capitol Police saved it.
Not nearly as many rally attendees as expected. 20K instead of 50K - 100K or even 1000K.

Then the failures of the Capitol police.

Window-climber-to-be claimed in a video a little earlier that there were 3 million people there. Did she study math at Trump U?

Rep. Marie Newman’s First Week on the Job – Chicago Magazine - nice interview with her.
Let’s be very clear who they are: they’re seditionists, white supremacists, and domestic terrorists. I have dear friends that were there, and it was very scary to them. They have all recounted it to me. They had oxygen hoods on, they were crouched down. We have friends that are of varying degrees of agility, shall we say. Some had just had surgery. We have veterans, former law enforcement, and they were telling members, “This is what you do.”

What we learned here is that Congress needs a plan for everything. We assumed, because [during] every inauguration and major event the perimeter is secured, that this was all set. We now know that something went awry — [either] between the partners, [or] the Trump Administration may have said no to them, [that] they could not have help. Something happened that was not appropriate.
Then
But doesn’t that lead you down the slope of saying that anybody who objects to an electoral vote should be expelled?

Let’s break that down. I want to be clear what Congresswoman Bush is articulating. Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, several members of the House, literally said, Yes, you should be at the Capitol and you should force your way in. It is not about free speech. And I want to be clear: There may have been protestors at that event. A hundred percent fine. The people that breached the Capitol and brought pipe bombs and brought large weapons, those are seditionists, white supremacists, and domestic terrorists, and we have to stop being polite about that.

What about members like Rep. Bost [IL-12] and Rep. Miller [IL-15], who just cast a vote saying, “We don’t accept these electoral votes”?

That’s fine. That’s your American privilege to do that. That act of disagreeing with the certification is OK. What’s not OK is for Mary Miller to be a white supremacist and to be supporting Adolf Hitler’s ideology.

She says she was comparing leftists to Adolf Hitler. That was her explanation.

There’s no backpedaling. Jan Schakowsky, Tammy Duckworth, and I have asked her to resign.
