Nearly 1,200 migrants picked up off Libya, heading to Italy
Are we helping desperate migrants — or just people smugglers?

If you do not send these mass migrants back but keep bringing them into Europe, that merely encourages more mass migration. Especially since they are picking these migrants off the coast of Libya, doing the smugglers' work for them.
This open door policy toward mass migration must stop. I think UK leaving the EU is overall a bad choice (for both UK and EU), but I can understand their frustrations with suicidal policies EU is pushing.

Non-governmental organizations deny any wrongdoing, saying they are simply looking to save lives, but they are facing criticism in Italy, which has taken in about half a million migrants since the start of 2014.

This has disaster written all over it.

They should start shooting people in the sea rather than recognize them as desperate human beings needing compassion.

Do you see no middle ground between shooting them and helping them cross into Europe?

How about deposit them back on Libyan shores (i.e. where they took off from) instead of bringing them all into Europe? Europe should not be obligated to take in everybody who makes it 12 miles off the coast of Africa.

"Rescuing" these migrants and bringing them to Europe is merely encouraging millions more to contemplate the journey, and hundreds of thousands to undertake it. This is obviously not sustainable. And from a humanitarian point of view, more people attempting the crossing means more shipwrecks and more dead.

Had the Mediterranean route been properly shut down (instead of being aided and abetted), these people would probably not have tried to cross in the first place and they would not have drowned.

Good idea, why don't you go help them do that?

You conservatives must get tired of being scared all the time. Every day is just another opportunity for something you don't know about or can't understand to come knocking at your door. Scared of people, scared of change, from morning to night. Just terrified of the powerless and miserable dragging themselves from one region of the planet to a slightly safer one. Thinking about nothing else but how to prevent tired people with no money from scaring you. Never mind that everything bad they could ever do to you has already been done, and with much worse consequences, by people you're not particularly afraid of for some reason. You're lucky enough to have entire armies and law enforcement agencies whose job it is to protect your scared asses from harm regardless of the source, but that doesn't help. You're still scared like little children about everything under the sun that has little to no chance of hurting anybody. I don't have much to say other than that. It just never struck me until now how bizarre it is to project an image of strength and bravado when you're actually so scared.

It is suggested that the NGOs actually go inside the 12 mile limit to fetch them. Who knows if the boats are actually capsized. It's pretty crazy that people get on these boats knowing that the boat is not going to make it.

As a compassionate person, I'm not sure I can live with the tragedy of relatively poor places like Libya losing out on these wonderful citizens who will add so much to their tax base, economy and commitment to western values.

It's tragic, but you're a big boy. You'll find a way to manage and get right back to the important business of being petrified of the needy.

This is like a broken record. It has been explained a number of times. The EU has a legal obligation to accept refugees. In order to do so, it must ascertain whether the individual is a refugee or an immigrant. That cannot be done by sending the person back before that determination is made.

If this really bothers you, you should endeavor to either change international law and/or conventions, or EU law instead of continually whining about it in internet forums.

This is like a broken record. It has been explained a number of times.
The apologists for mass migration are like a broken record and repeating your open border talking points does not qualify as explanation. Europe can't afford to let in everybody who wants to come in nor is there any legal requirement for Europe to do so. And the longer mainstream politicians allow this mass invasion, the more it fuels populist resentment. Should LePen win French election, Eu migration capitulation would be the chief reason.

The EU has a legal obligation to accept refugees.
Show me the law that mandates that EU must accept everybody who shows up at Europe's borders or even just shows up 12 miles off the coast of Africa.
It is unsustainable for Europe to keep letting all these people in. Especially since vast majority of them are not refugees, but economic migrants. And even with bona fide refugees, there is no legal requirement for Europe to let unlimited numbers of refugees. There is also such a thing as safe third country principle. If you come from Syria to a safe country, say Turkey or Jordan, there is no requirement for say Germany to take you in just because you can have a better standard of living in Germany rather than Turkey.

In order to do so, it must ascertain whether the individual is a refugee or an immigrant. That cannot be done by sending the person back before that determination is made.
Again, there is no legal requirement to let people enter Europe just because they are 12 miles off Africa.

If this really bothers you, you should endeavor to either change international law and/or conventions, or EU law instead of continually whining about it in internet forums.
And you have yet to show me any law or convention that mandates Europe must take everybody who takes off from Africa.

Your rant is irrelevant to the issue about the responsibilities and requirements under EU or international law.

This is the last time. Pages 42-44 in this document ( explains current EU policy and obligations under EU and International law with links to the relevant legal text.

Apparently, the countries of the EU are ignorant of EU law. Which makes it even more important for you to educate the relevant Europeans instead of wasting your time here with your boring bigoted whining.

And your reference to laws has nothing to do with Europe not having to take migrants just because they are 12 miles from African soil.

Where exactly does it say that Europe must take in unlimited number of migrants when they are 12 miles off the coast of Africa?
Where exactly does it say that Europe must accept millions of migrants?

Again, irrelevant to the discussion about current EU legal obligations and responsibilities.
Of course it's relevant. You have millions of mass migrants that abuse the asylum/refugee system and also want to impose their doctrine of Islamism onto Europe (i.e. "your daughter will have to wear a hijab"). The asylum system was not created to facilitate mass migration. You and other advocates of open borders and mass migration are trying to fit a square peg (mass migration) into a round hole (asylum laws).

Apparently, the countries of the EU are ignorant of EU law. Which makes it even more important for you to educate the relevant Europeans instead of wasting your time here with your boring bigoted whining.
If you love these mass migrants so much, why don't you house them in your house? Why don't you allow them to eat your food for free and to tell you how your daughter is to dress, what kind of meats are allowable or that alcohol should prohibited?

The whole migration apologetics by you and other islamophilic left is such utter bullshit. You hate the West and want to see it destroyed by Islamic invasion.

And your reference to laws has nothing to do with Europe not having to take migrants just because they are 12 miles from African soil.
Well, you need to explain that to the EU because they disagree. Honestly, if you are such an expert and feel so strongly about this injustice, why are you wasting your time and efforts spouting your gibberish on this board?

Where exactly does it say that Europe must take in unlimited number of migrants when they are 12 miles off the coast of Africa?
Where exactly does it say that Europe must accept millions of migrants?
You continually conflate refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. Even though those differences and their relevance have been explained numerous times to you. There is no answer to your straw men.

Of course it's relevant. You have millions of mass migrants that abuse the asylum/refugee system and also want to impose their doctrine of Islamism onto Europe (i.e. "your daughter will have to wear a hijab"). The asylum system was not created to facilitate mass migration.
No, it was not. So you need to take your expertise and offer to the EU so that they can sort this out.
You and other advocates of open borders and mass migration are trying to fit a square peg (mass migration) into a round hole (asylum laws).
I am not an advocate of open borders and mass migration. You are babbling.

The amount of nonsense you are posting has me worried. Are you alright?

As far as I know, they are sending most back.
Exactly. If this boats are interdicted in the water by the authorities, they are sent back. If these people seeking entry into the EU land on EU soil, they are supposed to be processed by EU law. That means sorting out the validity of their claims. If they are found to be refugees or asylum-seekers, they are resettled. If not, they are sent back. This has been explained many times. And it is usually understood by most reasonable, disinterested adults with even a modicum of normal human compassion.

Sent back where? Many countries are not taking their people back unless they return voluntarily, and quite a few of the fake refugees have "lost" their passports on the way (if they ever had one).
