May the Food Drive Bless Us Everyone: Walmart, Wages and Workers

And once again

Here is the point -----> .

and here is dismal

dismal <--------

Worlds apart.

As long as we start with the assumption your point is *the* point that's a great post.

Unfortunately we often find in the world that other people have points too.

- - - Updated - - -

The part where the worst paying company in America would *average* paying $12.83 if they had such phenomenal market power that they would bid wages down to starvation levels if there weren't a minimum wage.

Seriously, do you need us to explain the concept of "average"?

Nope.

Apparently we do.

Bill Gates walks into a bar. Suddenly, everyone in the bar is, on average, a millionaire. Wheeeeee!

I would also completely disconnect health insurance from employment. Why should who you work for have any bearing on your health insurance? Why should the unemployed have a tougher time getting health insurance. Health insurance is a welfare of the populace issue, something we should all be interested in, and something we should collectively insure.

So, I guess Universal Single Payer Healthcare and Universal Basic Income would be my social-economic platform. What political party does that align me with?

Wow, there is not one corporation in the US that pays hourly people less than $12.83 per hour.

This whole minimum wage discussion seems silly now.

So you admit that you are a proponent of Big Government and wasting billions of taxpayer dollars in handouts?

What part of "average" do you not understand?

I think that's the problem.

"Average" can commonly refer to mean or median. In this case the mean is certainly higher than the median.

No matter what the MW is, if you are one of the wealthiest people in the WORLD and huge swathes of your employees need your customers to BUY THEM FOOD FROM YOU IN ORDER TO HAVE ONE BIG MEAL A YEAR, you are the definition of WRONG, EVIL, and WOULD BE KILL-WORTHY IF YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT WERE WORTH A BULLET!

Oh, Happy Thanksgiving Everyone :)

I have been in contract negotiations for a large corporate grocery retailer in Canada with a unionized workforce and they frequently use 'the Walmart Defense' as a justification for sinking to the lowest common denominator.

It makes me sick.

Once again, I ask you. Should a 20/hour a week job that requires no more than a 6th grade education be enough to feed a family of 4? Walmart has several of these employees, you know. Also, did you know that a $10/week full time job is enough to afford walmart groceries?

Also, you must really hate all those companies who refuse to hire these walmart employers. Should we have a massive bloodletting for the pieces of scum who would let walmart employees rot in a ditch by offering them no job whatsoever? Would you gleefully pull the trigger on these bastards?

Did you not read the post?

The "bastards" aren't worth the bullet.

A 20 hour week is not defined as full time work. It is part time.

And are these part time employees excluded from the food drive?

What no worker should be excluded from is reasonable pay for services rendered: productive work for the benefit of the company. Working full time, an employee should be able to buy whatever they need in terms of food, shelter, clothing, entertainment and something left over as savings.

Why is it the company's responsibility to ensure that? They are at least meeting them three quarters of the way by offering them a job for pay that, if full time and you live a frugal life style, will cover the necessities (when you add in things like the earned income credit and other similar programs). What about all the millions that don't do one whit for these individuals? Also, why is the food drive a criticism if the part time employees can take advantage, those who are actually the most in need (and the most likely to take advantage of the offer)?

If the company requires work to be performed on behalf of their business, they should pay a fair price for it. If you need a plumber to fix your leaking pipes or a mechanic to fix your car etc, they are not going to quote a rate that does not enable them to meet their financial needs, for example.

The difference between the financial condition of workers lies in bargaining power. Those with the least bargaining power are the most likely to be disadvantaged, so without standards that are imposed by the state, employers looking after their own interests tend to take advantage of those with the least bargaining power by paying as little as possible for the work they need doing. History has countless examples.

Try offering a business, car repairs, plumber, lawyer, grocery store, etc, three quarters of the price they charge for their goods and services....

If I make the offer, and they accept, do I deserve to be shot? What about all the millions that are not only meeting them three quarters of the way, but are actually meeting them zero of the way?

They may accept your offer, who knows, but unlike those that are in most disadvantaged bargaining position, it is their choice whether they accept or not, and they most probably won't suffer financially too much if they do accept.

wrong.

In math, an "average" only ever refers to the arithmetic mean. It never refers to the median. You just failed the class.

I stepped into a classroom of 7 year olds and finally had an above average penis. :joy:
