Says women are smarter than men.
Politico said:
First lady Michelle Obama engaged in a battle of the sexes Wednesday, claiming that women are more intelligent than their male counterparts.
“We can’t waste the spotlight. Time is short. Change is needed. And women are smarter than men,” Obama said during the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit to a laughing audience, according to White House press pool reports.
Michelle Obama: ‘Women are smarter than men’

WTF? Imagine the outcry if somebody suggested that men were smarter than women. But it's perfectly politically correct to claim the reverse.

So what part about this being a joke did you not get. Was it what she said or the laughter after it that makes it hard to understand that this was a joke.

Female chauvinism isn't new or rare, and it sounds just as stupid as male chauvinism.

So you're officially on record that it's acceptable for political figures to joke about men being smarter than women?

I don't know that it's politically correct, but it's certainly profitable.
Many stand-up comedians claim that their wives are the smart ones. They draw laughs and sell tickets.

What, maybe if Michelle had made it part of a 'you might be a woman' joke, would that have been slightly more obvious?
"If you'd rather fight than make an intelligent change, you probably don't have a uterus."

well, uh, actually...

For millenia women were told they were not as smart as men. Most women on this planet still are told that.

and it's no joke.

They can say whatever they want, but it just might hurt their chances when election time rolls around. Last I checked, Michelle Obama is not running for any political office, but if she ever does feel free to withhold your vote because of her comment.

I can't really comment on whether or not this was intended as a joke, given that the clip that is available on the linked article is only 11 seconds long. On the other hand, also given the short length of the clip, it is extremely obvious that the comment was taken out of context.

Claiming it was a "joke" does nothing for her sexist and for the blatant double standard because if any man joked that "men are smarter than women" he'd be promptly accused of misogyny and pressured to resign any position he held.
But, as usual, women can do no wrong.

Foxworthy's redneck humor is self-deprecating. So her using that format to ridicule men is not a good analogy. A better one would be to say something like
"If you'd rather insistently nag about small things rather than make intelligent change you might have a uterus".

All the real issues in this world, and we get a thread about this.

I guess sexism is only a "real issue" when it's directed against the "more equal" gender?

I don't suppose you realize this, but your posts in this thread are supporting evidence for Michele Obama's jocular claim.

For millenia women were told they were not as smart as men. Most women on this planet still are told that.
And for the last half century or so western men have been told they are not as smart as women. But of course you think that kind of sexism is perfectly acceptable, even commendable.

I don't suppose you realize this but resorting to cheap personal attacks shows clearly you have no reasoned arguments to offer. But hey, what else's new?

Does that mean Michelle isn't joking?

yes

Well, if I disagree with what she said, I'll be branded a racist AND a misogynist, so I'll lay low for now.
IMO you would be branded as someone who cannot distinguish between a remark made in jest and one made in a serious mode. Further branded as someone who did not do his research regarding the context and goal of that symposium laid out in the preceding opening speech :

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press...-obama-investing-our-future-symposium-spous-0

Meaning that her remark should not be triggering such angst about "disagreeing with her" or "agreeing with her" as most people (those who can distinguish) would not pull a drama queen over it.

However I could see how in the context of the US, people who cultivate negative stereotypes about Black women such as all being single mothers, welfare draining culprits, not pursuing education and void of any desire to motivate their daughters to pursue education, how those people would feel very uncomfortable with a high profile Black woman defying those stereotypes by having become such a successful, achieving and highly educated person. I would expect that such people will zoom on that remark (without distinguishing) and build a drama around it while baiting whichever non distinguishing audience into another gender war inducing debate where representatives of both genders are to tear each other apart on who is superior or inferior to the other.

In the meantime, the non distinguishing parties are distracted from the status of women on the African continent and the vital importance for leaders in African nations to facilitate access to education and health care to young African girls.

But of course I am not distracted for 2 reasons :

1) I am part of the distinguishing audience, meaning I can assess jest versus serious.

2) I am very familiar with the conditions of women in Africa with the added element of Africa being my "Africa Obota" as my native continent and one where I spent most of my childhood.
