Nobody expected my mother to live to be 97 and her biggest fear was living past 90. It was at age 90 that I noticed she had signs of dementia and she went on becoming more confused over her final 7 years. Still, imo, dementia is much worse for family members and caret takers then it is for the victims of the disease. They live in their own little world, but it's heart breaking when your spouse has no idea who you are any longer. I've seen that so many times and it was one of the saddest things I've experienced as a nurse. That is why the fact that my late mother only remembered me right up until her final months, made me feel very special. When someone is in their late 90s, death may be sudden but should not be unexpected imo, no matter how healthy they might have been up until that point. I had a healthy patient who was 101, but he got pneumonia and died quickly. Pneumonia used to be called the old person's friend because it would take you out quickly instead of lingering on and suffering. Ok. We're off topic again. There are tables that will tell you your average life expectancy based on your current age, but expectations themselves are held by people. Can it really be considered "unexpected" when you get to 82?I wouldn't mind going suddenly and unexpectedly around age 82 or 83 or 84. It's not dying, it's suffering that most of us older adults worry about.Moody Blues bassist, co-lead vocalist and songwriter John Lodge has died "suddenly and unexpectedly" aged 82.
On average, the younger you are the older you expect to be when you die. Up to a point. After which it’s “if I knew I would live this long I would have taken better care of myself “.
