In sect that shuns medicine, case against pastor is novel

READING, Pa. (AP) - A pastor in a fundamentalist Christian sect that rejects doctors and drugs has been charged in the death of a child - his own granddaughter - from medical neglect. The novel prosecution is raising hopes among some advocates that it might spur change in a church that has resisted it. Faith Tabernacle Congregation has long told adherents to place their trust in God alone for healing. As a result, dozens of children, mostly in Pennsylvania, have died of preventable and treatable illnesses. Church members reject modern medicine as a bedrock tenet of their faith, even as some have faced manslaughter charges in child deaths dating back 35 years.

A test! A test! Here we see the miracle working promise of the Bible put to the test. Is this Bible miracle working thing working out as promised?

Mark 16:18
... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

James 5:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord
shall raise him up;...

And remember, A fool does not learn from his mistakes, a smart man learns from his mistakes, a wise man learns from other men's mistakes. Why can't these fools learn from a long history of children dying from relying on prayer to heal their sick children! I am so sick or seeing this happen again and again.

To be fair, though, this girl was going to grow up to be a serial killer. God saved dozens of innocent lives by ignoring the family's prayers and allowing her to die as a child.

So, on behalf of God - you're welcome.

It is kind of amazing how often god makes sure that so many future Hitlers and future Jack the Rippers and future Dahmers are raised by people that reject modern science or cannot access modern medicine.

Omnibenevolence, dude. He has our backs.

Phewww! For a minute I thought the psycho christian 'church' in Oregon got another kid killed. At least we have a law specifically for this kind of child abuse, not that it completely stops this one 'church' here...

If one Googles "faith healing, child deaths", it makes for some sad reading. One of the problems historically has been courts and politicians who have more or less refused to crack down on this abuse for one reason or the other, in many locales.

Though it does raise the question of what he was thinking when he failed to cause Hitler, Ripper and Dahmer to die in infancy.

I mean, historical Hitler was once a future Hitler, and God did fuck all. It should have been a doddle to kill him through measles, influenza or diphtheria as a baby; and even easier to hit him with a random bullet or shell fragment during his service on the Western Front in the Great War.

Why does everyone seem to think that killing Hitler in infancy would have prevented World War 2?

Hitler was just the guy who ran in front of the angry mob and yelled "charge!" If you go back and kill Hitler as a baby, the angry mob would still have been there, and maybe someone more competent would have run out in front of the mob and started yelling. That would have been much, much worse for the world.

Wait. According to the story, the child could have been treated with antibiotics? Isn't pneumonia caused by a virus? I'm confused.

Sure, perhaps. The idea has been done to death in fiction - Stephen Fry's Making History is a good example - and for sure you could easily imagine a competent Fuehrer being far worse than the crazy one we actually got. But this is God we are talking about. For the omnicognisant, there are no unexpected consequences; for the omnipotent, compromises are never required. If Rudolf Gloder would have killed ten million Jews, and Hitler 'only' six million, then Hitler is the better choice - to a mere mortal with no other options. But God always has other options, by definition. So what's his excuse?

IIRC, Self Mutation once claimed that if God HAD stopped Hitler and the whole bag of evil we associate with him, God would not get credit, and we'd never know to thank him for stopping future Hitlers...

I miss Self Mutation; that guy was a riot. My favorite story of his was the supernatural force in the sewers he and his friends explored.

Was that the 'something splashed in the water' and the only thing that could possibly explain it was a ghost?

I'm pretty sure that it was an evil clown who lived in the sewers and terrorized the town's children. Then it turned out to be a giant space spider or something ... the story kind of fell apart at the end.

So they are charged with manslaughter and have agreed to take their remaining children to a doctor if they are sick. And they're supposedly being monitored.

Religion and mental illness are the same thing in this case.

Wait, they're charged with killing one of their kids and they get to keep the other kids? If this judge charges a bank manager for stealing from customer accounts, does he make him promise to try really, really hard to not do it again when he goes back to work the next day?
