Ha. It made me jump.
 
They are very common around here. Mostly they sit in a more relaxed posture, and look like a small owl (though they are not actually owls).

We also have Stone Curlews which have a similar camouflage mode where they adjust their posture to look like an old broken tree branch. It's very convincing, if you didn't catch them moving beforehand, you wouldn't give them a second glance.
