I’ve seen that happen SO many times!
Not with show jumpers or trail competitors, but reg’lar trail riders who think that if they get some speed up, their horse will jump that irrigation ditch.
My cutting horse would do it to me too, but I don’t make that mistake. In fact when he was about two years old I backed him up to an irrigation ditch because he wouldn’t go near it in a forward gear. Then I turned him around and of course his impulse is to flee so I didn’t let him. Repeat and repeat, never asking him to jump. Finally he got so sick of it that when I turned him around to face the ditch, he crouched down and skied over the ditch from a standing stop (almost sent me flying). Repeat and repeat, and finally he started going over it without hesitation or drama, just the little bunny hop required to clear a 2’ wide ditch.
The funny thing is that he would walk right into a raging river without hesitation; it’s the darkness of the ditch that freaks them out; you never know what may lurk there!
