NFL 2024

I may be the only Cowboys fan on this board, but growing up in Dallas I come by it honestly. When I was in Middle School the city had two teams, the Cowboys and the Texans (later the Chiefs) and it was mandatory you pick one or the other. I picked the Cowboys. Tom Landry's son was two grades behind me in High School. A few years later my then father-in-law would take me to games in the Cotton Bowl to watch Don Meredith pass to Bob Hayes, "the world's fastest human." So, like I said, I come by it honestly.
So, last night. I don't know what to say. This one can't be blamed on Jerry Jones. I can't really blame anyone. Somehow we've angered the football gods. Atonement must be made, but how? Build an altar on the star in the center of the field and let the smoke from burnt offerings waft up through the open roof? Get a priest to exorcise the demons (Jones family)?
It took me 30 years to get over Leon Lett's Thanksgiving Day gaffe. And now this.

Respect to you for staying with it. I was a Browns fan during their many near-misses. Luckily, they moved to my backyard and figured out how to win it all.

Interesting week so far. Not a single result that I would consider an upset (sorry, Lions fans, there are three or more teams at least as good as yours; that defense is going to bite you in the playoffs).

Chiefs finally won a game without a dramatic finish; Steelers offense took the week off to rest up for their game against the Ravens; Lions and Bills agreed to play a defense-optional game; Baker Mayfield continues to live the dream after escaping from QB hell (aka Cleveland); and Lamar Jackson can do just about anything better than just about anyone, even with one hand holding up his pants.

Meanwhile, the gold rush continues as a large field competes for the right to draft first.

Saw Bills were up comfortably and figured that would be that, then saw the score and was quite surprised.

The poor deluded Browns fans that thought the season was turning around like last season with Winston this time. Nope. And no, let's not assume Flacco would have repeated the heroics. The Watson years are the Browns equivalence to Trump's first term in office. It is going to end and they'll need to rebuild with very little left over. Browns get their first round pick back this off-season. The Browns have paid a fortune to be a 0.500 team under Stefaniski.

Broncos make it to 9-5, guaranteeing a “winning” record, and looking like a wildcard prospect. Bo Nix is playing beyond his year and should only get better.
At least they’re no longer a complete bore to watch, so that’s something…

Odd how Russell Wilson left and both he and the Broncos are succeeding now.

It was not only a bad fit, it was bad timing. RW had a couple seasons to get his shit back together, the Donkeys had a couple of years to make note of the difference between hiring has-beens (Manning, Wilson) and bringing up talent (Elway, Nix).
Nix will thrive, because the system will continue to be built around him - trying to build around a stopgap recycled player like Wilson or Manning, can never create long term success. Yeah they did get a Superbowl out of Manning, but in retrospect, was that even a good idea? Look what it led to.

I disagree that Broncos got a Super Bowl out of Manning. The Broncos got a Super Bowl from their defense (and a missed Patriots extra point). Manning was a shell of himself when they won the Super Bowl.

Checking out the Steelers v Eagles stats... Steelers had less than 200 or so yards?! Steelers had the ball twice in the second half. The Eagles last drive was 21 plays, almost ten and a half minutes!

After decades of watching football, last night I finally saw a fair catch free kick, which resulted in three points for the Chargers and a 180 degree shift in momentum. I was surprised that Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh seemed to be unaware that he had that option. He sent his offense onto the field for one untimed down with the ball on the Denver 47, but someone must have told him that he could try a field goal from the line of scrimmage, with the defense 10 yards off the line. The kick split the uprights and would have been good from at least five yards farther.

Reminded me of the dropkick in The Longest Yard:

I’d no idea that a “fair-catch free kick” even existed in football. Huh.

No real surprises this weekend, aside from the Chiefs not needing something bizarre to win. Top seeds are still TBD.

This week, we get a couple Wednesday games, because the league doesn’t make enough damn money already. So four teams have to play three games in 11 days, when they should be trying to get healthy for the playoffs.
