• Welcome to the Internet Infidels Discussion Board.

NRA comes down hard on those who commit breech of gun etiquette.

You are assuming there's someone in charge, and their goals make sense.

I think 'a bunch of different idiots working at cross purposes' is a good description of libertarianism.

The establishment of an overclass is part of libertarianism going back to the original (Ayn Rand). Her novels present the aristocracy as something noble, while workers are generally nameless faceless drones who never complain. The fantasy all libertarians entertain of course is that they personally will be part of the aristocracy rather than the peasantry once the dust settles. That's the idiot part.

I let my membership lapse years ago as their (NRA) rhetoric moved too far in the direction of tinfoil hatters and doomsday "preppers".

The NRA used to be about gun safety and had extensive training programs for youth to educate them on the sport of shooting.

While they still offer those services, their public focus seems to have been shifted to burning anti-2nd Amendment strawmen.

I'd like to think this is a sign of things to come, but it's more likely just a PR band-aid.

It's important to remember that the NRA is nothing but an alliance of for-profit gun making and selling corporations with no real interest in anything but more and more profit. Their rhetoric is crafted to increase gun and ammunition sales. The easier it is for anyone to get a gun, the more guns sold. The more that guns get into the hands of criminals due to lack gun control (yes, there is a causal link), the more guns that frightened "law-abiding" gun owners need to by. The more frightened they are of government, the more guns they need to buy. There are not and never have been any libertarian principles behind the NRA, just capitalist principles.

They are one of billions of examples of how profit motive of powerful corporations is a serious threat to the public's safety and well being.

What does libertarianism have to do with gun ownership.

The purpose of libertarianism is to establish a new overclass to rule over us. The aristocracy they would have us worship probably prefer that fewer of the peasants be armed.

I am not referring to any official party, persons, or candidates that label themselves "Libertarian", just like when I talk about democracy I am not talking about Democrats. I am referring to actual libertarian principles, which by definition must center upon personal liberty as the core value to be protected, not just against government but (actually mostly) against incursion by other citizens, companies, corporations, etc.., Note that when personal liberty is protected against the actions of other persons it creates an inherent natural limit and restrictions on actions at the boundaries of other persons that must be policed and enforced by government. Capital "L" pseudo-"Libertarian" policies fail and are not compatible with libertarian principles precisely because they fail to consider infringement by other private persons and focus rabidly only on infringement by government.
Reasonable people who share a sincere value of such true libertarian principles can disagree about what kind of restrictions on what kinds of guns come closest to capturing that natural internal constraint of libertarianism between individuals, and any rational application of this principle would be nuanced and context dependent. IOW, some amount gun control is almost certainly compatible with true libertarianism principles but an all out ban on anything in the "gun" category without qualification would almost certainly be contradictory to those principles.

Well, it only took the NRA a few days to fold to the gun nutters within their ranks....

Retraction of common sense:
http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/20...as-chris-cox-open-carry-condemnation-mistake/
Yesterday, NRA-ILA jefe and NRA Veep-apparent Chris Cox took to Cam and Company to issue a retraction. Cox called the alert as a “mistake.”

I doubt there will be any note for Joe the Plumber...

"written by a staffer who was expressing his personal opinion". Right, because any NRA staffer can issue a press release.

Hosers.

In related gun obsession news, Pennsylvania are close to declaring an Official State Firearm.

article said:
Pennsylvania lawmakers on Wednesday moved closer to adopting the long rifle as the official state firearm, a step already taken by four other U.S. states.
The House of Representatives voted 157-39 to give the title to the Pennsylvania Long Rifle, a weapon with a long local history.

The Long Rifle was manufactured in southeastern Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries and valued by soldiers, hunters and settlers for its light weight and accuracy.
They just can't stop obsessing over these darn things. Though, this was an amendment added to recognize a particular State Plane (not a survey thing, but an airplane), which seems quite needless.

Guns, guns, guns, guns, guns!

I understand that North Dakota is close to approving an Official State ICBM.

I actually was nominated for the State Penis of Louisiana, or I should say, my penis was. The legislature was going to vote, but it got stuck in committee.

"Open Carry Texas" bonehead response to Target request no on bring guns into their store:

Time and time again, businesses that have asked guests not to bring legally possessed, self defense firearms into their establishments have seen their employees and customers victimized by criminals preying on the openly defenseless.

He, of course, does not give a single example

Yep. He doesn't understand about the concept of insurance and loss prevention, and why Target doesn't want armed wannabe vigilantes running through the aisles creating bigger problems.

Like this:
Man pulls gun on fellow customer on 1st day of expanded open-carry law in Georgia, newspaper reports
. Even if they didn't shoot each other, cops were called, arrests made... All in all, not good for business.

Love the Jon Stewart quote as headline for the article: "Ga. at 'the intersection of Open Carry Road and Stand Your Ground Place'"
