Obama has done it now - Nine Shot dead in church

Anything that distracts from a conversation about how the white guy might be somewhat to blame doesn't count as a derail.
Since nobody disputes that Roof is to blame for the murders there isn't much of a conversation to be had on that issue.

Yet, the conversation about some dude who committed a crime three decades ago and nobody here except you has heard of central to the point?

Don't forget how it's all the victim's fault for not charging him while he reloaded!

It's as if all those years of mugging people while living the thug life taught them absolutely nothing about how to handle armed conflicts. They may as well have just stayed in school like the white students for all the good it did them.

Well he did contribute his share to poisoning race relations in America.

So you're just trying to keep up?

Hopefully. He still enjoyed a life that is twice as long as that of his victim so far.

Life in prison is decidedly less pleasant than you seem to realize.

I merely mentioned his name in a response to Malintent where the talk was about anti-death penalty activists and how, unlike Mumia, Roof was the wrong type of murderer (wrong skin color, wrong political ideology) for them to rally around. It would have stayed at that had it not been for people getting all defensive and implausibly claiming never to have heard the name.

I hope that Roof does not get the death penalty. I am horrified and saddened that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev received a death sentence. I strongly oppose the death penalty. Period.

My thoughs exactly about the risible claims that people have never heard his name. By the way: have you heard of MAJ before this thread?

No.

Incorrect again.

It would take someone who wanted OTHERS to love and was willing to get shot in the attempt.

he reloaded FIVE times, people should have been catching on.

So in your Action Hero fantasy the librarian peaks out from behind her cover and notices...

Yet the fantasy happens in real life.
This particular one does not.

"I waited for him to stop and reload..."
"... his shotgun. Then I emptied a can of pepper spray in his face and snatched the gun out of his hands."

Seriously. Am I the only one who actually clicked Derec's link?

Let's be very clear about this: you're bullshitting. You have NO IDEA what to do in a gun fight and you don't actually care; this is the "I'd step up and be a hero!" line that people spout because they want to sound tough and self-sufficient and they think everyone else should sound tough and self-sufficient too. And yes, I'm sure it sounds VERY impressive to someone, somewhere. But it's still bullshit.

Really? Which professionals? Because the professionals teaching the active shooter (law enforcement, Homeland Security) response training say differently. You might want to actually take a look at the links I provided or research "active shooter response". It also includes methods for not getting shot if you are armed and the police arrive. (They state not to expect them to tell the difference between you - the good guy with the gun or the shooter - the bad guy with the gun. They just will be going for the guy with the gun.)

They're saying evacuate, hide, fight--in that order.

Since neither evacuate nor hide is viable in this situation that leaves fight.

Except it IS viable, because several of the people who tried to hide are, in fact, still alive.

This is not the first shooting where it has been mentioned the shooter reloaded during the shooting.
How fucking long does it take to reload the weapon he had? How long?

Automatic pistol: 3 seconds. Maybe 5 if your hands are shaking.

Well he did contribute his share to poisoning race relations in America.
So to recap. Ultimate responsibility for the Charleston shooting rests on:
1) The victims, for being too cowardly to fight back
2) The Church, for using "bombastic" affectations that whip black people into a frenzy
3) Mumia Abu-Jamal, for poisoning race relations in America
4) Those on the far left who SUPPORT Mumia Abu-Jamal (even those of us who either never heard of him or never really cared)
5) Dylan Roof

Anyone else you want to add to that list, Derec? You haven't mentioned Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton in a while but I'm sure if you put your mind to it you could find a way to blame them too. Dylan Roof also has a list of people he thinks deserve the blame for his massacre; I'm sure he'll be happy to point you in the right direction.

My thoughs exactly about the risible claims that people have never heard his name. By the way: have you heard of MAJ before this thread?
The first time I heard his name was on a joke in the Daily Show. The second time was a segment on Democracy Now that I skipped because it didn't interest me all that much. I suspect most people on this board had heard of him before, just don't remember having heard of it on account of their not giving a damn. The only reason I remember is because I still chuckle whenever I see a "Free Mumia!" T-shirt (Free Mumia? What a bargain!).

I have a detailed plan of what I'd do if some crazy, gun-toting killer walked into my office and started shooting. There's all sorts of super-ninja moves I'd use to take his ass down and be the hero all the hot women I work with have been waiting their whole lives for. I totally wouldn't just hide underneath a desk and hope he doesn't notice me.

I'm also overly prepared for a zombie invasion.

Al Sharpton! Has anyone mentioned Al Sharpton yet? Every time something happens to "the blacks," we're supposed to either predict the imminent arrival of Al Sharpton, or if he's already come and gone, roll our eyes and wonder aloud why he speaks for the black community.

:wave2:

Sharpton and Obama caused this will all their race baiting. If it wasn't for the incessant race baiting then the murderer wouldn't have gotten so angry that he had to take real action (as opposed to relentlessly pointing out 'but blacks' on internet forums).

Edit: I'm pretty sure "But Blacks" shares superhero accommodations with "Not All Men".

Oh he's the Free Mumia guy?

Yeah, I knew he was full of shit back in the 1980s. Still waiting on that alibi he promised everyone but fails to reveal.

I realize you said this in jest, but you're basically correct.

Are right-wing talking points REALLY that predictable?

Actually that's not true. Our company's security consultants told us in no uncertain terms that the safest thing to do is to find the nearest lockable office, get inside, lock the door, get down, and stay down until the all clear is given. The alarm sends a signal to the police, of course.

Of course. That doesn't work very well when the shooter is in the room with you, though.

What room?

You know this from personal experience, then?

My work also has an emergency plan regarding an active shooter. Rushing the guy is a last resort and only if you think it might be safer than not rushing him. Frankly, even mentioning that option in the plan is more a cover butts kind of thing than an actual expectation.

In our plan it is a last resort. They even state, "you will most likely die, but someone might survive".
