Ohio State Senator - "The colored population" not washing their hands?

He claims to have thought the phrase "colored population" was the same as "people of color". Nice try.
Well in all fairness, navigating PC language is a real mine field.

He was fired from his job as an ER doctor (!) yesterday for being a racist idiot.
It's a real sign of intolerance in our society when people lose their jobs just for expressing a non-PC opinion. He should sue.

Sorry, you are wrong: "the colored", "the colored people" and "the colored population" are racist.

But "people of color" is somehow uplifting?
Political correctness is really ridiculous!

Also, does that mean that NAACP is officially "cancelled"? What about United Negro College Fund? Is that still ok, or racist as well?

Not to anyone alive and awake in the USA for the past 50 years: "the coloreds" or "the colored people" or "the colored population" has been recognized as racist for over 50 years.

Thanks Toni, yes that mostly works for me (though oddly not always for the WaPo) and I’ll try it when I get back on to my laptop. 👍
WaPo and NYT got wise to that tactic and check for incognito mode. Now you have to clear browsing data in regular mode once monthly limit is reached.

In the case of this individual’s ‘opinion’ or ‘speculation,’ the racism which informs such could and likely does have serious negative healt consequences for any of his non-white patients.

Still works for me if I am on a novel device that doesn’t already have my log in.

Somebody ought to give that memo to NAACP ...

Also, what exactly makes it racist other than it being an older term? Specifically, what is the substantive difference to the acceptable term "people of color"?

Now you know why the NAACP is not the National Association for the Advancement of THE colored people.

Again, just because he expressed a non-PC opinion, does not make him a "racist" or somebody that should be fired.

Language and thought police is a real sign of intolerance in a society. It's hitting conservatives now, so all you faux-liberals are rejoicing, but the pendulum could turn.

No! This is not some non-pc remark but a speculation that betrays his belief that non-white people are just not as clean as white people! It goes hand in hand with not prescribing certain treatments if he thinks a patient won’t be able to follow the directions because they are black. Or aren’t really in pain because they are black. Or should have that toe amputated because black people can’t keep the wound clean!

It’s not like he is a janitor or auto mechanic. He makes decisions —real life and fear decisions! Based on his racist views of patients!!!!

Where would this 'pendulum' go, though? What the hell would the opposite side of history's march of progress in these matters?
I mean, we decided, at least on paper, that blacks are people. And women. We allowed interracial relationships. We acknowledged gays are people.

It's not really a pendulum. More like building a staircase. Each step becomes a foundation for the next step up.

Do you have any evidence he did any of this or are you engaging in the same prejudicial stereotyping you are accusing him of?

It is a fact that black people are harder hit by COVID. Unfortunately, it is not ideologically acceptable to offer any potential explanation for it other than "racism by white people", which is the PC explanation for everything.

There is no evidence that he has any racist views. And I doubt very much a black physician who is a member of Nation of Islam would be fired even though he literally believes white people are subhuman.
There is a huge double standard in our country.

Except this is not a march for progress. Real progress is only found at the pendulum's equilibrium position and not in the extremes of the swing.

I mean, we decided, at least on paper, that blacks are people. And women. We allowed interracial relationships. We acknowledged gays are people.
All of which is great. And represents the equilibrium position of the pendulum.
However, this ridiculous language policing (is is "people of color" or "colored people" that's racist today? What term will be racist tomorrow?) and inability to talk about racial issues openly and honestly ("racism by white people" is the only accepted reason for any discrepancy between black and white people) is definitely not progress.

It's not really a pendulum. More like building a staircase. Each step becomes a foundation for the next step up.
Not even close.

Not now. For over 50 years. Your lack of US social history is appalling.

My knowledge of US history is very good. I am aware that the term has fallen out of favor. I reject the notion that these two words are inherently racist though, especially when virtually the same words in the opposite order are au courant.

There is little evidence of it in these thread.

The straw man you reject is more evidence that you don't know much about US social history.
