The organizers of the protest at McGuffey High School encouraged anyone who shared their bigoted stance to show support by wearing a flannel shirt
The event was held last Thursday and students report that openly gay pupils were also physically bullied
A number of the anti-gay protesters proudly shared photos of them wearing flannel shirts on social media platforms such as Instagram
Thursday's event appeared to be a reaction to a Day Of Silence events for bullied LBGT students held the previous day

Forgive my ignorance, but why is flannel considered Anti-Gay? Is it because it is so very unfashionable?

The article:
It is believed the students chose the shirts because they are a common item of clothing found in most wardrobes.
So, like, they didn't really have to go to any great EFFORT in this.

Nuts don't fall too far from the tree.

Bet their grandpappies were wearing sheets and putting up "No N-rs" signs too.

I assumed the flannel was a way to mock/appropriate the stereotyped attire of lesbians.

But maybe that is given these assclowns to much credit.

Ew.

What a grotesque group of individuals.

I get that some kids are bullies, but it seems rather inappropriate to revel in it this way.

More disturbing that that 50-100 students at a school are hateful enough to organize and participate in this is the comments section.

While only 3 of the 11 most recent comments support these students, those are the 3 comments with the highest ratio of more "likes" than "dislikes" by other readers.

I'd wager a few of these protesters are gay themselves, and are desperately trying to stay in line with prohibitions written thousands of years ago. The most adamant anti-drinker is the one who's dying for a drink.

One of my bosses was a lesbian who wore flannel a lot. Just mentioning it. I'm a lesbian but I despise flannel.

I'm not a lesbian and I love flannel. Helps keep you warm in Michigan winters.

Now because of these asshole kids, I may be seen to be anti-gay.

Of course they are. In a few years, they'll leave the confines of their high school and move to other cities, or college. They will meet new people who have no idea of their past, but will recognise the tormented ambiguity in their soul, and offer a sympathetic shoulder, so to speak.

Wait, I thought our schools were making students gay. How is this possible if that was true? And whatever happened to the liberal agenda in schools?

Why do we always have to imply that anti-gay bigots are secretly gay themselves? Sometimes people act like assholes just because they're assholes.

Experience.

What we have here, beyond the bullying aspects, is an adolescent bonding process. This small group identifies themselves by special clothes and a profession of a common belief. It's very common to see this at the time of life when the world has suddenly become big and threatening. Younger boys often form "He-man woman haters" clubs when girls suddenly become ominously attractive. It's phase that seldom lasts long, especially as it becomes clear the girls see the boys as a greater threat to them, than the girls ever were to the boys.

Here we have a group of young men who have formed a "He-man Homo haters" club. Those of us with several decades of watching boys transform into young men and then into grown men know the lack of depth of their thinking at this age. What seems so profound and important to them is so obviously superficial, it's laughable to us. Of course, it's impolite to laugh out loud. Most of the young men will look back on this experience and find it slightly embarrassing. They may even wish there had been a more responsible adult around to explain the consequences of their actions. A few of them will be appalled at themselves, wondering how they were capable of such cruelty.

If one finds themselves in an intolerant society and want desperately to fit, mimicking the intolerance is the only way. It's entirely possible one or more of these young men is gay and finds himself in an impossible situation. It would be interesting to learn where this idea arose and how it became the groups badge. One does not set mouse traps, unless one believes there is a mouse, even if one has never seen it.

Agreed.

That said, I think part of the impulse to draw that inference is the desire to try and explain why someone would feel such strong hateful emotion and put forth the effort against people and their behaviors that they would virtually never see or encounter in their life if they didn't go out of their way to confront them.

It's one thing to be an asshole towards people that do things you don't like that actually affect you in some way or that you at least have to see (like guys in skinny jeans :). Its another to rant about actions that you yourself spend your time trying to think and talk about but that you'd never see unless you wanted to.

"Projected" self-loathing and anger due to you own internal gay thoughts that you cannot avoid is a potential source of such hate for things that should have no impact on your life. There are some high profile political instances where that has turned out to be the case. But I agree that its way overblown.
Another and more prevalent source of such hatred for things that shouldn't matter to you is religion with its authoritarian ethics. Natural ethics tend to keep hate focused on things that actually do harm oneself or others one cares for. Religious ethics creates hate for anything that it is claimed God hates or that just seems to go against God's will as inferred from the "natural order" he chose to create.
Almost all these kids drew crosses on their hands, with the words "Anti-Gay" underneath. That isn't coincidence, no are they just using religion as an excuse. Their level of theistic belief and authoritarian ethical system likely came first and was a causal factor in fueling and intensifying whatever negative feelings they might have had in the absence of religion.
