People who believe in Creationism are also more likely to be duped by Alex Jones — according to science

No real surprises here....creationists are as dumb as a bag of rocks...and as dishonest as Jones.

recent psychological study revealed scientists were able to pinpoint the mindset that enables people to believe in bizarre and farfetched ideas.

Dr. Sebastian Dieguez of the University of Fribourg, in Switzerland, explained that the same attitude that makes people believe in Creationism is one that causes people to believe Alex Jones’ conspiracy theories, The Independent reported.

French and Swiss scientists found a previously undiscovered link that conspiracy theorists are more likely to think “everything happens for a reason” and thus, things that happen are “meant to be.” The approach is one remarkably similar to the way creationists view the evolution of humans and animals.

“Although very different at first glance, both these belief systems are associated with a single and powerful cognitive bias named teleological thinking, which entails the perception of final causes and overriding purpose in naturally occurring events and entities,” said Dieguez.

Teleological thinking means someone will agree with something such as, “the sun rises to give us light” or “bees exist to ensure pollination.” It’s a way of thinking typical when children are learning about the world around them. Yet, some adults never grow out of it.

Scientists approached 150 students for interviews and compared it to data from a larger study of 1,250. It was there that they found the link between creationism and conspiracy theories.

“By drawing attention to the analogy between creationism and conspiracism, we hope to highlight one of the major flaws of conspiracy theories and therefore help people detect it, namely that they rely on teleological reasoning by ascribing a final cause and overriding purpose to world events,” said Dr. Dieguez.

Alex Jones is a peddler of such theories like all mass shootings are “false flags” and the infamous PizzaGate conspiracy that resulted in a man shooting up a local pizza parlor.

Con artists have long known ways to disable people's defensive mechanisms.
Claim to be a Christain, needing money to do godly work, some people will hand it over.

Sailors who would think twice about handing their money over to total strangers are helpless if he has a military haircut. God, we used to brief the students EVERY SUMMER in Norfolk, and every year, they would come tell us how they got scammed...

And look at Lion defending Hovind.

Lion's teleological thinking is deeply ingrained.

Yes. It certainly is ingrained.
But it's not a cognitive bias to perceive intent/motive - overriding purpose in naturally occurring events and entities.
These intents/motives exist self-evidently

LIRC thinks an earthquake has intent or motive??? Or that the tide goes in and out because of motivation? And believing that isn't a cognitive bias?

This is well into Dunning-Kruger territory.

Earthquake prediction is a branch of the science of seismology.
This means earthquakes are caused rather than spontaneous.

There was no science of seismology when the Bible was compiled (from scraps of pagan religions, for political purposes). So, at that time... you guessed it - GODDIDIT
Just like lightning.

"...much of the reasoning put forth by those attempting to disprove God is fundamentally contradictory"

Awww, ain't that cute? Here's one for you:

"... all of the pretense to reason pushed forth by religions is fundamentally dishonest"

See how easy that is? There's a difference though; I know of NOBODY who is "trying to disprove God" except those who have ANOTHER imaginary supernatural being they are trying to defend, whereas religions are constantly pretending to reason.

That's a strong contender for 'stupidest thing I have ever heard'.

How can someone make a statement like that, while still retaining sufficient cognitive function to operate a computer? It's actually quite impressive.

The word "caused" itself calls the notion of intention or purpose to mind?

What? Caused by an intelligent entity acting with intent? Or the result of natural forces? What are you saying here?

There is nothing supernatural about the processes that result in earthquakes. Our planet is mostly molten metal with a thin crust of solid matter floating on top. The crust is not static, it is in constant motion, driven by the energy of the underlying molten material as it ebbs and flows with convection currents due to the heat trapped within it. The driver is the heat, some of which is energy left over from the violent birth of our planet 4.5 BYA, and a lot of it is energy released by radioactive decay. The crust is not a homogeneous, monolithic unit; it is actually a patchwork of units which we call continental plates. As the plates move against one another they tend to lock up due to friction at the surfaces where they meet, which builds up local concentrations of energy. Once in a while the friction at a particular interface is overcome and the plates move relative to one another, releasing energy in the process. This is what we call an earthquake, the movement of the crust and the surface as the energy moves through it in the form of compression and shear waves.

We know all this because of the work of scientists who spend their lives trying to better understand how our reality works. Isn't science wonderful? And now that you know, you could try to educate your fellow Christians who might still believe earthquakes are punishment visited on sinful humans by their homicidal god. One can only hope.
