Police Misconduct Catch All Thread

not only did Larry Krasner win, but he swept in new allies with him today!

≈8 judicial candidates endorsed by the local progressive group @reclaimphila
have won tonight in judge races, a big deal because judges have been obstacle for some of Krasner's reforms so far.

More broadly, this is a major demonstration of strenght for the Philadelphia left

Even more broadly, this is quite the narrative-challenging result.

That test on how a progressive incumbent could win re-election has morphed into an even bigger progressive hold on local offices.

Same exact dynamic in Pittsburgh, by the way

In Pittsburgh & its county (Allegheny), in today's elections:

—voters banned no-knock warrants
—voters banned solitary confinement in jail
—Pittsburgh fired its mayor for a progressive challenger
—4 progressives who ran for judgeships on curbing bail & incarceration won
Philadelphia Election Results
  • Democratic
    • Larry Krasner - 65.12% - 103,195
    • Carlos Vega - 34.79% - 55,134
    • Write-In - 0.09% - 140
  • Republican
    • Charles "Chuck" Peruto - 95.10% - 10,158
    • Write-In - 4.90% - 523
Can a Progressive Prosecutor Survive a 40% Spike in Homicides? - The New York Times - "Larry Krasner, the district attorney who reduced incarceration in Philadelphia, faces a challenger who blames him for an increase in violent crime."
When Larry Krasner was elected Philadelphia’s district attorney in 2017, his story made him one of the most visible of a new wave of progressive prosecutors: A lawyer who had sued the police for civil rights violations 75 times had become a top law enforcement official in one of America’s largest cities.

Mr. Krasner promised to stop prosecuting drug possession and prostitution and to hold the police accountable for misconduct. But even as he wrote a triumphal book about his election and starred in a PBS documentary series, homicides and gun violence in Philadelphia were rising to levels not seen since the 1990s.

Now Mr. Krasner, 60, is facing a primary challenge from a veteran prosecutor he fired, who is arguing that Mr. Krasner has made the city less safe.
Referring to the police union, "The union has given $25,200 to Mr. Vega’s campaign and has encouraged Republican voters to register as Democrats in order to vote Mr. Krasner out."
Mr. Krasner is relying on the coalition that backed him four years ago, including more support from a PAC associated with George Soros, which poured $1.7 million into his first race. He has raised $887,000 since Mr. Vega entered the race. Mr. Vega has raised $734,000. The winner of the Democratic primary will be heavily favored in the November general election against the Republican candidate, Charles Peruto Jr., a defense lawyer who says that public safety is more important than civil rights. Mr. Peruto has said he will drop out of the race if Mr. Vega wins the primary.

Arrest warrants issued for 2 former Colorado police officers involved in violent arrest of elderly woman

(CNN)Arrest warrants have been issued for two former Colorado police officers in connection with the violent arrest last year of a 73-year-old woman with dementia, a top prosecutor said Wednesday afternoon.

Former Loveland police officer Austin Hopp has been charged with two felonies: assault in the second degree causing serious bodily injury to an at-risk victim, and attempts to influence a public servant. Hopp was also charged with first-degree official misconduct, a misdemeanor, said Gordon McLaughlin, district attorney for the Eighth Judicial District of Colorado.

Daria Jalali, another former Loveland police officer, was charged with three misdemeanors: failure to perform the duty to report an excessive use of force, failure to perform the duty to intervene in an excessive use of force, and first-degree official misconduct, according to the district attorney.

Though Rep. MTG has been kicked off of her committees, she can still vote and make floor speeches.
JUST IN: Marjorie Taylor Greene Rips Kamala Harris Over "BLM Riots" In Angry House Floor Speech - YouTube
On the House floor, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) slammed Democrats for forming a January 6th Commission and not studying the violent riots of 2020, which she blamed on BLM and antifa, and called out VP Kamala Harris and some Congressional Democrats for supporting the Minnesota Freedom Fund.
I watched the whole thing. She blamed the  George Floyd protests on BLM and Antifa, calling them grossly destructive. I'll quote the Wikipedia article to give some perspective.
While the majority of protests have been peaceful,[24] demonstrations in some cities escalated into riots, looting,[25] and street skirmishes with police and counter-protesters. Some police responded to protests with instances of notable violence, including against reporters.[26][27][28] At least 200 cities in the U.S. had imposed curfews by early June 2020, while more than 30 states and Washington, D.C. activated over 96,000 National Guard, State Guard, 82nd Airborne, and 3rd Infantry Regiment service members.[29][30][31][32] The deployment, when combined with preexisting deployments related to the COVID-19 pandemic and other natural disasters, constituted the largest military operation other than war in U.S. history.[33] By the end of June, at least 14,000 people had been arrested.[3][34][35] It was later estimated that between May 26 and August 22, 93% of individual protests were "peaceful and nondestructive"[36] and The Washington Post estimated that by the end of June, 96.3% of 7,305 demonstrations involved no injuries and no property damage.[37] Nevertheless, arson, vandalism, and looting between May 26 and June 8 were tabulated to have caused $1–2 billion in insured damages nationally—the highest recorded damage from civil disorder in U.S. history, "eclipsing the record set in Los Angeles in 1992 after the acquittal of the police officers who brutalized Rodney King."[5][38]
MTG whined that the 1/6 attack on the Capitol was only one incident, and that it shows how Congresspeople care more about themselves than about the American people.

She then got outraged at then-Senator Kamala Harris and Rep. Ilhan Omar for promoting fundraising efforts for legal-defense funds for those arrested in the protests.

She also got outraged at efforts to defund the police, and she got indignant at efforts to repeal qualified immunity. She whined that it's us taxpapers who have to pay the costs of defending cops charged with misconduct.

But when it came to prosecuting the Capitol attackers, she did a 180-degree turnaround and sounded exactly like some Black Lives Matter activist. Complaining about how some cops allegedly beat up some attacker, and claiming that some of them were in solitary confinement. Also making a martyr out of attacker Ashli Babbitt, who was shot and killed by a cop in that attack.

Petty but funny

Reminded me a guy I knew. He was caught drunk sleeping a car. Police gave him a ride home but the next day when we finally found a car (he did not remember well where it was) windshield was smashed. Could be the same guy on this video.

When people in their 60s still insist on the "Jr" in their names, it sticks in my head. Why the fuck does Charles Peruto Jnr sound so familiar? Oh, right. He's that guy. He has also offered to have his (still alive I hope) wife cook for every PD Captain.

If the Philadelphia Police Union endorse this fucking guy, then they deserve to be defunded in the very literal sense.

Police reform: Progressives urge end to qualified immunity in George Floyd bill
Ten House progressives on Friday urged congressional leaders to end qualified immunity in a developing police reform bill, as a dispute over whether to weaken the rules shielding officers from civil lawsuits stalls progress toward a bipartisan agreement.

Lawmakers led by Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., have worked to craft a plan that could win the Republican support needed to get through both chambers of Congress. They have tried to tweak a House-passed bill, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which among other changes aims to ban chokeholds, carotid holds and no-knock warrants, and seeks to end qualified immunity.

...
It is unclear now what both parties would accept as a qualified immunity compromise. The 10 House Democrats did not explicitly threaten to vote against a bill if it does not weaken rules protecting officers from lawsuits. However, their opposition alone could sink legislation in the House if a bill does not win a significant share of GOP votes.

Bunch of FBI guys going way beyond what the warrant allowed for and apparently looting in the process, despite being on camera. I'd really like to see a requirement that search warrants must be filmed.

Now, most of the boxes they were examining were no doubt full of ill-gotten gains but they had no proof and the warrant they were operating under explicitly said they weren't allowed to look farther than was needed to establish who owned the boxes.

3 Tacoma officers involved in Manuel Ellis’ death charged with 2nd-degree murder, manslaughter

Three Tacoma police officers have been criminally charged in the death of Manuel Ellis, Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced Thursday.

Christopher Burbank, 35, and Matthew Collins, 38, were charged Thursday in Pierce County Superior Court with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter. Timothy Rankine, 32, was charged with first-degree manslaughter.

All three turned themselves in by Thursday evening and were booked into Pierce County Jail.

After a six-month case review and further investigation by the Attorney General’s Office, Ferguson decided criminal charges were warranted against police because “Ellis died during the course of and in furtherance of Burbank and Collins’ felonious assault and/or unlawful imprisonment of Ellis,” prosecutors wrote in 21 pages of charging documents.

The two officers tackled and struck Ellis multiple times, used a neck restraint and used a Taser on him three times, “all without justification for these uses of force,” records say.
