I doubt this one can be pinned on Trump nor even Republicans in general, because this sounds like a particular kind of clueless upper middle class racism I've heard from both Democrats and Republicans. Prepare to cringe a lot while reading this one.
Unfortunately, many Asian-Americans (including myself) were taught to avoid confrontation by Asian culture, and this results in adults who don't speak up when someone says something racist about Asians. That's exactly the kind of confrontation we're taught to avoid. We really, really need to start speaking up for ourselves more often, because unfortunately, there are too many saying things like this.
If we don't confront people like this, how can we expect them to know this is wrong?
