In that photo, the first thing I focused on about the kid in the plaid shirt? The badge he is wearing on his chest. That red rose? I's a Democratic Socialist symbol.
 
I wouldn't worry about this at all. When has coming for socialists ever been a problem.

There's actually a somewhat tongue-in-cheek movement going around Twitter for people to start showing up enmasse at Trump rallies - all wearing plaid shirts and no one clapping/smiling/cheering

Yeah, That's kind of strange and I noticed that too. But in a post rally interview he did an interview wearing that pin that was depicted in the first picture. Personally I think the pin was photo-shopped out of that second picture you just replied to.

I'm wondering if he pinned it after and that's when people took notice of him.

Honestly, I don't know what would possess anyone to be standing behind someone speaking at an event like that. I think it is interesting they were handing out MAGA hats for them to wear as well.
