Rise of White Supremacists stems from Trump or from Identity Politics?

We've seen an upsurge of white pride recently in the U.S. and its in all the headlines.

Many blame this on Trump and the things he has said about Mexicans, the Chinese, Muslims etc.

Some of it may stem from the Muslim terror issue and all the refugees streaming into western cultures, some having trouble adapting to put mildly. I personally think this is a smaller part of it.

Some of it, and I think a lot of it, may stem from the recent upsurge of minority identity politics that we have seen so much of with the rise of the regressive left, with groups like PRIDE and Black Lives Matter (usually created with the best of intentions; sometimes engaging in questionable tactics), with media focus during elections always on the "black vote", "latino vote", "woman vote", etc, as if we are supposed to vote by race or gender instead of ideology. It shouldn't be a huge surprise that white pride rises with white identity politics, and it it shouldn't be a huge surprise that white identity politics rise when people keep pointing at white identity (everything from "white privilege" accusations, to the silly videos online like "dear white people").

Can we all agree that each of the above (Trump, minority identity politics, muslim issue and refugee culture clash) have contributed to this? What proportions would you attribute to what? And what do you see as the way forward?

Also, who are the top thought leaders pushing the white pride side of things? I would love to see an interview with one of them if it could be done in a calm manner. Somebody like Rubin should step up for this.

White supremacy was not issue when white people in the USA had basically all the power - that was identity politics at its height of power.

IMO, the "rise" of white supremacy is the last gasp of a segment of white society that wrongly places its woes on "other people". Trump is a symptom of this, not a cause. Some of it is an over-reaction to "minority identity politics". Some of it is due to ignorance and a lack of empathy, and some of it is due to racism/bigotry.

When people over-react to something (call it factor X), I find it difficult to attribute factor X as a cause, since over-reactions are the sole responsibility of the actors, not the impetus.

Who are these white supremacists? Are they solidly middle class career professionals? Successful business owners? My assumption is they are mainly made up of disgruntled people who largely realize the only path to a successful future is through higher education. Something they can not or will not pursue. So they're angry and they look for someone to blame to cover their own shortcomings. They identified with the dominant successful American culture and now they're realizing there is no successful path forward through physical labor. They are becoming those poor 'other people' they insult.

I agree with this. That was the birth of and the height of identity politics. Then people like King came along and over the span of decades identity politics waned, but in recent years we have seen a massive upsurge of it, but this time from minority groups (groups based entirely on race, gender, sexual orientation, etc). And that in turn has spurned an upsurge or ressurection in white pride.

What gave a boost to ignorant white hatred was a black president for eight years.

Trump played the white racists well. They are his most vocal fans.

Trump will never condemn white supremacism in direct terms. If he does he alienates his core.

Equal and opposite reactions. For decades, leftists have been tearing down whites for the purpose of building up "minorities" that actually make up a majority the of the American population.

What does it say about the "black community" when the only way to build it up is to scream "WHITE PRIVILEGED!!!" at whites who are doing nothing more than living their lives, taking care of themselves and their families?

The identity politics of the Left has always been and will always be the root cause of racial strife and division in the United States.

Are you including the Civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s as "leftist"?

What are you babbling about? Who is screaming that whites? I have never heard that screamed at me.

There as no identity politics of the left right after the Civil war - and there was plenty of racial strife and division for decades. So, I think your thesis is not reflected in the reality of the USA.

Nothing ignorant about trying to help black people out of poverty.

And no whites need be offended.

But it is incredibly ignorant to think you are superior because your skin burns more easily.

Hundreds of armed white people marching (without a permit, BTW) carrying semi-automatic weapons and torches, and not being bothered by the police is the height of white privilege.

They don't stem from Trump, but they clearly feel emboldened by him and feel glad that they finally have a politician in office who listens to them and cares about their agenda. They are no longer a hated fringe group, but instead a valued constituency with the ear of the President.

They can now stand up and be proud that they are a key part of the American political dialogue and not a bunch of outsiders who's concerns aren't being addressed in legislation.

"I am proud to be black " said the black man.
"I am proud to be Asian" said the Chinese women.
"I am proud to be white" said the racist.

If the only people saying they are proud to be white is skinheads, then I guess this is true.
It isn't white pride, but hatred that motivates these people. Racism is more easily spread where there are fewer minorities to contradict the lies.

OT rant:
Personally, I can't understand anyone who says they are proud of anything that isn't a personal accomplishment. Are you proud to be a natural blonde when you had no choice in the matter? Weak. Are you proud to be an American when all you did was get born there? Weak. Proud to be Christian when you were indocrtinated as a child and have never even cracked open a contradictory book? Weak. Even "gay pride" is a weak sentiment. I understand they need a word that stands in opposition to "shame," but "pride" is the wrong word.

Tell me you are proud to have qualified for the 1976 olympics. That's great. Tell me you are proud to have won your elementary school spelling bee. That's great. Tell me you are proud to have tied your shoes this moring, that's not terribly impressive for most people, but at least it is an accomplishment.

Don't tell me you are proud to be a black Muslim from Kuwait or a white Christian Englishman. That's pathetic.

No, this is not it. If anything, groups like BLM started as a reaction to white supremacists. Violent police in black communities, knuckleheads like George Zimmerman running around and shooting black people, etc.
