Sheriff Joe to run for Arizona Senate Seat

GOP had the sphincter tighten a bit with the news that Joe Arpaio announced he submitted paperwork to run for the US Senate in Arizona. Right now, he'd be in the run in the primary for Jeff Flake's seat. Flake who is a moderate... I'm sorry... I mean conservative that can't even win a primary in Arizona because the right-wing has lost its fucking mind, is stepping out because he fears a hard route of appeasing the alt-right in the primary and then the moderates in the General Election.

Arpaio would presumably have no money to campaign with, so it'd be a long shot, though he certainly does have great name recognition thanks to all the lawsuits.

This continues to show just how out of their collective mind the right-wing has become. Though, I'd gladly see a Democrat beat him in November, like Jones beat Moore in Alabama.

the GOP should learn from the dems and not grow complacent or take long held strongholds for granted. Arizona is not the hardline red state many believe it to be. Though it is like second Florida in some regards...

While the moore jones election was largely circumstantial, I think a dem victory here would give the GOP real reason to fear a democrat sweep.

I thought he was convicted of a felony, and that accepting a pardon is basically an admission of guilt. Are [proven/convicted] felons allowed to be US Senators?

If the people of the electoral district (what, Arizona?) want a felon to represent them, I guess they get a felon to represent them. I mean, look at Montana. Their congresscritter is a thug who assaults people who ask questions he doesn't happen to like. He's still a congresscritter. Hell, they could have stopped him from being a congresscritter because he committed his crime the night before the election. But, evidently, in enlightened Montana assault, including battery, is some kind of hobby or something, and evidently the candidate just hadn't gotten his permit an' everything straight before pummeling the inquirer, so they just fined him and slapped his hand. Montana is fun that way.

Remember, Eugene V. Debs ran a campaign for US President from an Atlanta federal prison. He garnered 3.4% of the vote.

AZ is dominated by rightwing idiots, mostly old retirees from the midwest, who don't give a shit about AZ itself, as long as their 'fixed' income isn't touched. I think it would be tough for Arpaio, considering he was finally on the outs for his old job in Maricopa county, which is the largest, reddest, county in AZ. There are quite a few Dem strongholds, but I can only hope that we'd have enough actual number to beat the Maricopa block.

A pardon is not an admission of guilt, as far as I am aware. Regardless, the requirements are simply:

(1) they must be at least 30 years old; (2) they must have been citizens of the United States for the past 9 years or longer; and (3) they must be inhabitants of the states they seek to represent at the time of their election.

Also, they cannot have engaged in rebellion against the United States, after having sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution. This is a 14th Amendment ad-on that makes sense in the context of the aftermath of the Civil War.

I wouldn't say "easy" but this is exactly the catalyst the state would need to flip. Joe represents an existential threat to the livelihoods of a large bloc of AZ voters, many of which are connected to immigrants or are immigrants themselves.

Bannon was recently fired from Breitbart for making factual statements about Kuschner, Trump Jr, and Manafort... in private (at the time). Bannon's one moment of lucidness got him axed from the alt-right movement.

This is a strange time for Arizona... Kelly Ward (Bundy supporter and Chemtrails theorist) had been the crazy vote option against the normative Repug Martha McSally, running for Flake's seat. Now it appears Arpaio and Ward are splitting the FU vote.

A further complication arose Tuesday when Joe Arpaio, the infamous former sheriff of Maricopa County (that’s Phoenix and its suburbs), announced that he’s running for Flake’s seat.

Arpaio could easily prove to be a more formidable Trumpist challenger in the primary to McSally than Ward, as he’s better-known and more media-savvy than Ward and has a stronger personal relationship with Trump.

He could also prove to be a disastrous nominee for the GOP if he wins the primary because he managed to lose his sheriff job in the 2016 election by a healthy margin even as Trump narrowly carried Maricopa — one of the few big counties he actually won. If Arpaio and Ward split the anti-establishment vote, McSally will win, but early polling indicates that if Arpaio can consolidate it, he’ll get the nod.

When I visited Holland in 2003 the police at Amsterdam warned me about some dangerous areas. I didn't experience any problems however.

McCain's health comes into play as well. Things don't sound good for him, and his death could oddly split the primaries, meaning the two loons could each run for their own seat, one a special election, the other for Flake's seat.

Now, granted this is for a Senate seat not President, but even as early as anyone had suggested Bernie running for President again in 2020, there were many detractors pointing out his age as a detriment. The key point about this is that Bernie is 9 years Sheriff Joe's junior! Sheriff Joe will be 86 by election time this fall, and let's remember that Senate terms are 6 years in length. A representative in the district in which I used to live, Louise Slaughter, has been taking heat about her age for some time now, though at 88, she's still one sharp cookie!

A couple of things about the voting dynamics in AZ. Maricopa county dominates the state because it's 2/3rds of the state population (AZ = 6.931 million, Maricopa = 4.168 million). However, the other two big metro areas in AZ are both quite solidly democratic. The more rural places are surprisingly mixed and split.
Anyway, considering Arpaio lost his re-election bid in Maricopa, which still went solidly for the trumpster fire, might be indicative that he's finally worn out his welcome.
I wouldn't say it's a sure thing, but I wouldn't give him better than about 40% odds of actually winning at the state level (barring some voting shenanigans).
