In 1865, John Wilkes Booth shoots "Honest Abe" Abraham Lincoln.

And now, someone shoots Shinzo Abe. A coincidence? I don't think so. Somebody's taking down all the Abes. Who's next?

Not exactly certain we are far enough from this assassination to be making jokes... and I'll make jokes on just about anything. This killing seems so out of the blue.

Completely shocking. That it happened at all. The gruesome, public manner of the murder. The ambiguity of the motive. Nothing good can come of this. And no, not a joking matter at all.

Abe was the Trumper.
Yeah, he was a hard right-wing nationalist and war crimes denier, who idolised Imperial Japan. His political positions were pretty unpleasant, and very popular, particularly amongst old Japanese men who are nostalgic for the greatness of Japan between 1937 and 1942.

Many other nations have a less rosy view on how “great” Japan was in that period.

The shooter used a homemade gun. Looked like two zip guns taped together.

Apparently it is a case of mistaken identity. Crazy guy had a grudge against some religious sect and wanted to kill its leader.

There are a number of new religious movements that have captivated the urban youth. They have been both a sometime source and a sometime target of many of the more violent acts in recent Japanese history.

My understanding is that the gunman did know Abe was the man he was attacking, though, and fully intended to kill him. Ours is an age of conspiracy theories widely believed.

P.Z. Myers at Pharyngula posted a long post about Shinzo Abe and his party. Full of Hitler admiring Nazis. Worse than Trump and the MAGAts. Check out Pharyngula.

The religious sect that was the main reason for the assassination was none other than the Unification Church, i.e. the Moonies. They are active in right wing causes around the world, not to mention the good old USA. They founded and still own the Washington Times, which is a major right wing propaganda pump. Abe's party, which just won hugely in Japan, possibly with the help of a sympathy vote from the assassination, has connections to the Moonies.

It seems that the cult drained the family finances of the assassin, after it infected his mother. She gave away much of the family's money, according to the news report.

EXPLAINER: The Unification Church’s ties to Japan’s politics

TOKYO (AP) — The assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has unearthed long-suspected, little-talked-of links between him and a religious group that started in South Korea but has spread its influence around the world.

Police and Japanese media have suggested that the alleged attacker, Tetsuya Yamagami, who was arrested on the spot, was furious about Abe’s reported ties to the Unification Church, which has pursued relationships with politically conservative groups and leaders in the United States, Japan and Europe. The suspect reportedly was upset because his mother’s massive donations to the church bankrupted the family.

Many Japanese have been surprised as revelations emerged this week of the ties between the church and Japan’s top leaders, which have their roots in shared anti-communism efforts during the Cold War. Analysts say it could lead people to examine more closely how powerfully the ruling party’s conservative worldviews have steered the policies of modern Japan...

Assassination is not the best way to inform the public that you disapprove of another person's religion.

Actually, the assassination does happen to have focused the attention of the public on the ties between Abe's political party and the Unification Church. The reason for the assassination was to take revenge on the Moonies for what they did to his family. Like many evangelical religious cults, they grow rich by draining wealth from their base of believers. In some cases, that can lead to tragic consequences for the families of cult members, and that seems to have been what happened here.

So, would you say you support religious terrorism as long as it "works"?

Apparently between 700,000 and one million given to the Moonies by the family of the assassin?

Poli, I said nothing to support such a mischaracterization of my post. I merely disagreed with your opinion that this was just a religious issue. It was revenge for the suffering and humiliation that the assassin blamed on the church. If it were just a disagreement over beliefs or doctrines, there would likely have been no attack at all. The intent was likely to expose Abe's and his party's ties to the church, since Abe himself may well have had nothing to do with the financial loss. Any organization that had drained the assassin's finances might have led to such a vengeful crime. The fact that religion was involved is only part of the story.
