I've been reading a lot on narcissistic personality disorder. I could see Cruz as "suffering" from this. Five would be about right for the number of known partners.

One trouble is volunteering to become the loser in '16. The Republicans are in a bad situation. Run Trump and risk losing big in Congress (Federal and State) or run an alternative, someone who maybe at most won a primary. Romney has a mandate being a candidate before, but how are Republicans going to feel with him being the alternative to Trump/Cruz? On one hand you don't want to kill the woman / hispanic / moderate vote. At the same time, the Trump block are so set in their tantrum, they'll likely revolt for anything they consider establishment. Kasich is a possible choice as he is expendible, he takes one for the team.
It is important to look at what is wrong with Trump. If nothing else, it is his relation to women, he is polling close to 2 to 1 down to Hillary. Minorities are even worse. In running, you are possibly throwing away your career. Linda Lingle is the first name that comes to mind. But she is a former Governor from Hawaii and while it'll help save the moderate/woman vote from collapsing, they may well lose the uber-right wing misogynist vote (30%?).
The other option is Nikki Hailey. Minority, conservative, female. This gets the right check boxes on the list, but her career is in ascension. So maybe one of these two will be the running mate, to balance the female line of the ticket. Kasich / Hailey?
If the Cruz rumors are true, Carly Fiorina may be headed to jail.
