Four days before the 2016 congressional primary in her Northern California district, Erin Schrode woke up to tens of thousands of messages. They were everywhere: in her email, on her cellphone, on her Facebook and her Twitter and her Instagram.

“All would laugh with glee as they gang raped her and then bashed her bagel eating brains in,” one said.

“It’d be amusing to see her take twenty or so for 8 or 10 hours,” another said, again suggesting gang-rape.

It has been two years since Ms. Schrode, now 27, lost her Democratic primary and moved on. But the abuse — a toxic sludge of online trolling steeped in misogyny and anti-Semitism that also included photoshopped images of her face stretched into a Nazi lampshade and references to “preheating the ovens” — never stopped.

The 2018 election cycle has brought a surge of female candidates. A record number of women ran or are running for the Senate, the House and governorships, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. Many more are running for state legislatures and local offices. And in the process, they are finding that harassment and threats, already common for women, can be amplified in political races — especially if the candidate is a member of a minority group.

Why do we have so many blatantly sexist men around these days? Who and what is enabling this behavior? Anyone have an idea? ;)

There's more in the link but you get the idea. Women who run for public office may be in danger of grave harm and harassment.

And the abuse and harassment continues even after the candidate loses!

And this simply more evidence of the depressingly widespread bigotry and misogyny that runs deeps and wide in the USA.

Ya, but men who run for office are also in danger of being harassed on social media when they're charged with sexually assaulting the women who work for them, so it's not like female candidates are the only victims here.

Just as chimpanzees simulate fucking to say "I dominate you, I'm bigger and more powerful than you", so men also use violently sexual phrases as a way of signaling their superiority and denigrating their opponent.

Unfortunately who's "fucking" who somehow equates to dominance and submission in male minds.

Internet anonymity makes men brave enough to make those dominance displays.

Mix in ideology and it becomes an inter-tribal war.

We have lots of little morons whose mothers failed to teach them how to be human.

This level of group stalking and harassment of females is possible because these mongrels feel safe in their online anonymity and the belief that they will never be held accountable. Whenever they are outed and held accountable, it's not surprising to find them to be emotionally stunted, weak ass losers, who are very much cucks to each other, in the light of day.

And for some, strong women intimidate them and they feel emasculated by them. So they lash out to feel superior. These men have also probably been rejected by some woman in their past as well.

This part is called blaming women for the actions of men.

The reality is that every single person in the entire world has been "rejected" by someone somewhere for something. Being turned down for a date is NOT a license to be a misogynistic terrorist towards other women.

I know that you did not mean to provide cover for those types of men and their behavior towards women, but including the above comment basically does exactly that.

Why do you think conservatives and libertarians spent the last several decades attacking feminism and anyone who thinks women should not be treated as less than men?

I think they've been doing that reflexively, because they harbor terror of rejection by women, who have been rejecting their advances for their entire lives. If you ask one why they do it, they will deny doing any such thing as attacking feminism or feminists - it's just that feminists and feminism are wrong, so their disagreement is natural, as guardians of TROOTH and righteousness.

Yes, both sides are just as bad here! We must not forget that! [/sarcasm]
