The New National Don't-Say-Gay Bill

Is there a particular reason why such subject matter can't be taught and discussed at home by the kids' parents at a depth and age level they deem appropriate for their child? That way schools can focus on, you know, reading, writing and arithmetic...like in the olden days?

I just saw a news clip yesterday about how poorly kids are faring due to the covid lockdown. There's a lot catching up to do. Let's keep kids focused on the basics.
I just caught up with this thread, so let's look at it this way. When I was a child in the 50s, learning to read, all of the text books were about white children, or European backgrounds with very light colored skin. Anyone else here old enough to remember the Dick and Jane series that were used in many if not most public schools back then? My entire grammar school was all white, and we didn't even know what gay was, since gay folks were so deep int he closet back then.

There was a little girl in my 5th grade class who was obviously gay, as she wrote love letters to another little girl. I doubt she knew what being gay meant, but she did know that she was attracted to another little girl in the class. When the girl who received the letters asked her father about them, he told not to ever talk to the girl who was writing her the love letters. Wouldn't it have been better if he had explained that some people are naturally attracted to the same sex, when it comes to romance and she could simply tell the other girl that she wasn't interested in a romantic relationship with the other girl, or she could explain that she was only interested in boys when it came to romance. I think the letter writer was likely going through early puberty, as girls as young as 9 sometimes experience puberty. She was probably beginning to feel emotional/romantic feelings for the other little girl. But, in those days, we had no idea about anything other than heterosexual parents, and children who looked like us. In those days, few of us even knew anything about LGBTQ ID until we were older teenagers, often post high school. It horrifies me to think that the Republicans and their white Christian Nationalist influences want to return to those days of total ignorance. How horrible this would be for children who feel themselves identifying as a different gender than the one assigned at birth or a budding homosexual child, who would be led to think there is something wrong with the way they feel. Ok. I'm ranting.

My point is that one can learn how to read from text books that contain children and adults of different races and different sexual orientations or gender identification, etc., without making it the main point of the texts. It would just make the textbooks more inclusive, since we live in a world full of people who are minorities, when it comes to race, sexual orientation, gender ID, religious beliefs, ethnicity, etc. If the text books were more inclusive, just maybe the minorities wouldn't be seen as immoral or too different to be part of society. The goal would be to promote tolerance toward one's fellow humans, nothing more and nothing less. Yes. I'm being very idealistic, but when it comes to children, it's not bad to promote idealism.

I would have loved to have learned to read from textbooks that included children and adults who were different from myself. When you're not exposed to other cultures, and people with different identities, it's too easy to be prejudiced or simply ignorant of those folks. To me, learning about our differences is a positive thing. Ignorance isn't really bliss, after all.

I agree that the bill the Repugs are trying to create is just another attempt to demonize Democrats. Meanwhile the Republicans are trying to promote the idea that little White Christian Children are all being hurt by Democrats trying to promote equality. Damn. How did we let them get this far on their road to trying to establish a far right Christian theocracy, especially considering that Christians are becoming fewer in numbers and the non religious are the fastest growing group in the country?

is just another attempt to demonize Democrats.
But this goes deeper than that.

Why? What is really the thing they fear?

Let's find the shape and the name of the darkness that lives underneath this seemingly irrational desire, so we can address it directly.

There is a system a cycle of rebirth being threatened here. Any reactionary behavior against some phenomena is ultimately pursuant to a "success" of systemic retention or replication, or of a zero-sum-game behavior adjacent to such replication or retention.

So what is it?

The more I look at it, it appears a multi-pronged attempt at identifying and eliminating neurodiversity and other sources of objection against violation of consent.

This bill would probably be interpreted to extend to the collections in school libraries as well. Would books with “confirmed batchelors” or “spinsters” or affectionate cousins fall prey to these numbskulls.

By "olden days", what time period are you referring to? The Bronze age? The sciences have existed and been a part of nearly all manifestations of formal pedagogy since the at least classical Hellenestic period.

You just answered your own question. Desperation is one hell of a motivator. Christian fundies are scared shitless that they are becoming irrelevant. Meh, fuck 'em.

Can't happen too soon. They turned what was supposed to be their personal beliefs into a political tool... and now their tool's broken from overuse.

That's sort of my point, although I don't see them as irrelevant. There aren't that many of them left, statistically speaking, yet they have a lot of power. Their latest method of attacking Democrats is using so called "Devil words", associating Dems with grooming children for sex and associating this with the LBGTQ community along with of course, atheists. Meanwhile, we are timid in how we deal with them. Everything seems to be related to this insane culture war, along with election conspiracies and other bullshit and out right lies.

So, how do we fight this? It's not as if a minority has never controlled the majority before. Despite democracy being at risk, most American voters don't see that as a reason to base their votes on in the midterms. There is a good chance that the Republicans will control Congress in the near future. What then? They are tools of the far right white Christian Nationalists.

I guess a lot of what happens depends on the results of the midterms. I'm not optimistic, but it's hard to predict the outcomes of elections these days. If the Republicans do regain all of Congress, that's more evidence that "Idiocracy" is here. There will be endless, investigations into anything related to the Democratic Party or Biden. Nothing constructive will be accomplished and the culture wars will continue....

I think we're talking around each other in circles. I agree that far right conservatives aren't irrelevant. But they are seeing the writing on the wall and it's scaring them shitless. Hence the doubling down.

Replace "grooming", and "CRT" with "supports terrorists" and "unamerican" and you'll see the Right's rhetoric hasn't changed for decades. It's the same bullshit with a new coat of paint. I'm not sure people are as timid this time around, though.

I sure hope you're correct. I guess it's hard to see where I live. Regardless, I just wanted to gift another article that gives more evidence of how far off the deep end these evangelicals and far right nuts have gone.

At the end, after former president Donald Trump called in to energize the troops, more than 100 people lined up to be baptized.
Some had driven hours for the two-day ReAwaken America Tour in the leafy Pennsylvania countryside. Some had paid up to $500 for VIP tickets. They were 5,000 strong, celebratory but angry about where the country is headed. They said they believed the 2020 election was stolen, that vaccines kill people and that America — both its moral and civic foundation — is headed for complete collapse.

Now they were waiting to be baptized in a black plastic animal trough, leaving the water soaked and shivering — newly cleansed soldiers in their war for America.
Since April of last year, the ReAwaken America Tour has brought hardline-election deniers, anti-vaccine doctors, self-proclaimed prophets and conspiracy theorists to enthusiastic crowds across the country. The central message is that America’s white, evangelical Christian way of life is under threat from the globalist cabal on the “woke” left.

You really need to read the entire article to see how far into the conservative Christian hole these people have sunk. It's just hard to understand. It wouldn't concern me if they didn't have so many people running for office who think just like they do, or who are pretending to think like they do. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the hatred, and the ignorance.

Objection to sexual, LGBTQ content propels spike in book challenges

An analysis of book challenges from across the nation shows the majority were filed by just 11 people

Books about LGBTQ people are fast becoming the main target of a historic wave of school book challenges — and a large percentage of the complaints come from a minuscule number of hyperactive adults, a first-of-its-kind Washington Post analysis found.
A stated wish to shield children from sexual content is the main factor animating attempts to remove LGBTQ books, The Post found. The second-most common reason cited for pulling LGBTQ texts was an explicit desire to prevent children from reading about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary and queer lives.

The Post requested copies of all book challenges filed in the 2021-2022 school year with the 153 school districts that Tasslyn Magnusson, a researcher employed by free expression advocacy group PEN America, tracked as receiving formal requests to remove books last school year. In total, officials in more than 100 of those school systems, which are spread across 37 states, provided 1,065 complaints totaling 2,506 pages.

The Post analyzed the complaints to determine who was challenging the books, what kinds of books drew objections and why. Nearly half of filings — 43 percent — targeted titles with LGBTQ characters or themes, while 36 percent targeted titles featuring characters of color or dealing with issues of race and racism. The top reason people challenged books was “sexual” content; 61 percent of challenges referenced this concern.

Nipplegate all over again.

Only 1 in 12 reported their student actually having possession of the book! Over half found out from right wing media. Another 30% from other parents who heard about it from right wing media.

One person should not be able to get a book banned for all the students. It just happened again with the poem the poet read at Biden's inauguration. One person complains and the book gets pulled. It's bullshit.
