The Purge

Afrikaans mostly came from Dutch.
And "Dutch" is a corruption of "Deutsch", which is German for "German". Which is why the Pennsylvania Dutch are descended from Germans, and speak a German dialect.

Western Europe is a small and ancient place, and all the borders have shuffled around a lot over the centuries.

But yeah, Afrikaans is directly descended from Flemish, as spoken by the Dutch, rather than from Deutsch, as spoken by the Germans.

Sorting out all this can be aardvark hard work.

House Republicans plot impeachment against judges blocking Trump, DOGE

A few House Republicans are pledging to bring up impeachment articles against federal judges who have blocked Trump administration actions, including those of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), backing up tech billionaire Elon Musk’s call for a “wave of judicial impeachments.”

Impeaching judges is moving forward. The article gives 3 examples of the specific representatives writing articles of impeachment. Of course, MTG is one.
Not too worried as,

"It would take near-unanimous support from House Republicans to impeach a judge if Democrats do not support the measure, and support from Democrats would be required to clear the two-thirds threshold to convict on impeachment articles in the Senate."

Trump isn't exactly following the rules, though. So impeachment under Trump might look different. I am not creative enough to come up with what they might and so specifics do not matter. So don't assume these specifics matter: like an early retirement package or be impeached or a Russian disinformation campaign around them during impeachment with planted evidence or entrapment or Trump could fire them, even if illegal, who knows what they'll come up with that they'll call impeachment.

Here's a follow-up from Bizzaro World:

Following up again...

This idea has now has Mike Johnson advocating for it:

https://www.cnn.com/2025/04/06/us/national-parks-underground-railroad-harriet-tubman/index.html

An image of and quote from Harriet Tubman have been removed from a National Parks webpage about the “Underground Railroad,” following several prominent changes to government websites under the Trump administration.

The National Parks Service webpage for the “Underground Railroad” used to lead with a quote from Tubman, the railroad’s most famous “conductor”, a comparison on the Wayback Machine between the webpage on January 21 and March 19 shows. Both the quote and an image of Tubman have since been removed, along with several references to “enslaved” people and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.

We definitely know which side is attempting to "erase history" (MAGAtards).

Weird how it's not anywhere in the Constitution that proof of citizenship is required to vote. But obviously Republicans/MAGAtards don't give a shit about the Constitution.

It's not that weird.
Back in the days of the Founding Fathers nobody could vote except for WASP males.
And even they needed to be wealthy enough to take the time off working for a living to vote. Non-citizen people voting wasn't an issue, there were plenty of other barriers to voting.
Tom

Yes and no. Originally, non-citizens actually could vote, provided they were white male landowners, i.e. residents.

It's really marginalized people that have always had problems with representation in govt.

But don't worry the Broligarchy will solve that for everyone!

I'm mostly concerned about changing the banks where our SS is deposited monthly. At least we can do the changes online.
Sorry. Dangerous Oligarch Gouging Employees is screwing that as we speak. Announced this week they are shutting the website. Making folks apply for benefits in person at local offices, AND closing a bunch of local offices.
(gouging is not the right word. I couldn't think of a good G word.)
Mr. Sohy changed his at the website, but the website kept crashing when he tried to change mine. Yesterday we went to our local SS office. There was only one person ahead of me, so we were in and out in less than 30 minutes. I told the guy who helped us that I hoped he didn't lose his job due to Trump. He said we had more lose then he did if Trump messed with our SS. Then we told him we didn't vote for Trump, so don't blame us if things get screwed up, and we all laughed. Anyway, our SS office is small and used to always be very busy so I was delighted to be able to get it done so quickly. The guy said it would take less than 72 hours for the transition to take place, so unless the entire government crashes, I should get my April money in our new account, since it's due on the 27th.

My local county SS office is only 4 miles away. But has just been closed. The next closest is 40 miles. And no bus service.
I needed some annual paperwork in February. I applied online and got it through the mail just before it closed. Next February will be a problem.

Sorry to hear the office near you was closed. I was rather surprised that our's wasn't closed and still more surprised to find hardly anyone wa there. I did read that the phone service has been restored. Of course that may mean a five your wait. I have no idea if the website is still crashing. Has anyone tried using it recently?

Probably afraid they'll be seized and disappeared if they complain.

I doubt that. They did change the location a couple of years ago. Maybe my fellow seniors don't know where the newer location is, as it is behind the local community college on a very quiet road. I went a couple of weeks ago and it wasn't very busy, but everyone there was bitching about Trump, even the white MAGA looking couple. All of the staff were Black men, so it didn't look very MAGA. Of course, I do know of a few local Black guys who voted for Trump, but they aren't federal employees.
