The Super Secret Sisterhood

I think this is a false flag operation.

No, this is me being sick and tired of middle aged and old women attacking Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, along with other women in the freshman class, for coming into congress with agendas and not being afraid to say so. I'm tired of everyone from Whoopi Goldberg to faceless names on FaceBook telling these younger women to sit down and be quiet and fall into line behind Nancy Pelosi, who these older women worship as a force of nature but They have to protect because NP evidently can't withstand having a grown 29 year old woman act like a grown woman.

Gosh, I goggled "Whoopi Goldburg Alexandria Ocasio Cortez" and came up with nothing. Cortez had a protest against NP on November 13 and NP stated that she's ""inspired by the energy and activism of the many young activists and advocates leading the way on the climate crisis." To me, this is kinda odd. The Dems haven't started yet. NP isn't speaker yet. Cortez is "protesting" rather than doing something about it!

But regardless, what's the controversy? What did NP or Whoopi say about Cortez that was insulting? I couldn't find any links. I suspect that this is another manufactured controversy or Russian Bot operation. There is quite a bit of back and forth between Sarah Palin and Cortez right now...

The best reason to not support Nancy Pelosi is because our Republican Commander in Thief supports her. I would be super-suspicious of that if I were ya'll.

The time of thoughtful politics died during Dessert Storm (Bush Sr.), when cable news began the 24 hour news cycle that has lasted since then. It is about marketable politics, not thoughtful politics... the time for thoughtfulness is during your term, not during elections.

What does it mean to not support her? Who else is running? Are you saying that dems should just not have a speaker?

Cortez said that she will support Pelosi and Fudge has backed out of earlier claims that she was considering running for speaker. Fudge has her own baggage as she asked for leniency for that awful judge that beat up his wife in 2015, then killed his now ex wife earlier this week. I don't have the time right now to post all the links, so y'all will have to look this stuff up yourselves. Sorry.

Considering that all of the leadership positions are currently held by men who are about the same age as Nancy, I can't help but think that this is more about sexism than it is about ageism. My hope is that Pelosi will say that this will be her last run for speaker and she will help prepare someone younger to run next time. Right now, the Dems need her experience. They also need to be united.

Agreed. I think that it's also about people who don't like the democratic party trying to create controversy where there isn't any.

That and perhaps the idea that there needs to be some controversy in the Democratic party in order to prove that it's not all stodgy/hidebound/entrenched in rich old white people--which it is but still. Perhaps the Ocasia Cortez thing was either a freshman slip up or joke gone wrong or proving she won't become/be swallowed by The Machine.

Pelosi is a great whipping boy for the Republicans/FartyMcFuckface. She seems up to taking whatever they want to throw at her and by doing so, she deflects and shields a lot of other Democrats.

It's not a surprise that a woman is taking this role.

The Democratic Party represents a much wider swath of people in the US, so you’re going to see disagreement.

Pelosi's actually impressed me by how well she's quelled the rebellion against her speakership. She negotiated well when she needed to and stood firm when she needed to. It gives confidence that she'll be able to tell Trump to go and fuck off when it's needed and will give all her committees a free hand to do whatever investigations and hearings they want to do.

Gosh, I goggled "Whoopi Goldburg Alexandria Ocasio Cortez" and came up with nothing. Cortez had a protest against NP on November 13 and NP stated that she's ""inspired by the energy
What Whoopi was criticizing was the criticism and opposition to NP, mentioning the "Justice Democrats". Her exact words were "Some of y'all calling yourselves, what was it? something crazy, not crazy but it really kinda freaked me out"

Can see it in this video:

More good news for Pelosi and the Dems becoming more united. Maybe they can herd cats. ;)

“There’s no alternative right now and there’s not going to be one,” he said. “And in the event this breaks down on the floor, somebody could grab the speakership that really doesn’t deserve it.”

In a statement, Pelosi praised Higgins as “an extraordinary leader on the issue of achieving quality, affordable health care for all Americans” and said his proposal to allow Americans as young as 50 to “buy in” to Medicare is “central to this debate, as we work to build on the Affordable Care Act.”

Hopefully, most of the other 15 who oppose her, will realize their objections are only hurting the party.

The Dems need Nan. She's part of the old guard. Once she's gone, the crazies will take over.

Well, Whoopi's job is to stir some stuff up. But of all the issues today, an older person giving a tiny amount of shade to a younger person. Again, it seems like an incredibly manufactured controversy to me!

THIS IS A RANT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Ok, here's the deal.

  • There is no super sisterhood of women, never has been and never will be.
  • Just like not every black person has black people's best interest at heart, not every woman has women's best interest at heart.
  • Women tribe not with all other women, but with their men and other women who are like them.
  • Good women can still disagree, jockey for position and wield power for themselves and their group. That's not hating other women, that's practicing politics.
  • Women have no special morality, cordiality, or affection for all things wise and wonderful. Ovaries don't make you a saint. And that's a good thing 'cause life is hard, and saints are good at dying not fighting.
  • 53 percent of the white women who voted in the 2016 presidential election voted for Donald Trump. They are not my sisters.
  • When pregnant girls are put out of their churches, good Christian women don't stand and say, this is wrong. These women are not my sisters.
  • Mothers to this day tell their daughters not to leave abusive husbands, just tough it out. These women are not my sisters.

I have sisters. They are usually the women other women shit on.

Sisterhood has to be intentional and accepting of and expecting sacrifice. That type of sisterhood does exists, but it exists because of work and thought and intentional spirit, not because of an X chromosome.

OK, I'm done.

I +repped this post

It's refreshing to see gender equality proponents calling out gender identity politics both for the Emperors New Clothes and the Empresses' New Clothes.

Clearly there are sisterhood circles within circles within circles and somewhere on the interwebs there will be a #Real_Woman (who wants to be a woman) ranting that AthenaAwakened isn't her 'sister' either.

And why all you nice men have been sooooooo great at looking after us poor little helpless womenfolk, especially making sure we aren't doing jobs that are too much for our poor little heads and bodies to handle. Or interfere with cleaning your home, doing your laundry and making your meals.

Well, what side are you on? I fight against gender prejudice and that "poor helpless womenfolk" idea, just as I stand against the "evil aggressive male folk" idea. Maybe, just maybe, we can set those prejudices aside and actually focus on the competency, qualifications, aptitude and skill of individuals? Maybe we can get there? Just because we've failed to before, doesn't mean we can't make it happen now. How about you join in the effort rather than mocking it or working against it?

Sure he does. It's far too important an issue to leave to mere women.

One of the things for which I most admire Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is that she is smart enough to know she is not yet experienced enough to seek the reins of power. She will likely vote for Pelosi, knowing that she can learn much about which buttons to push, when and how to push them. It will be six years before she's even eligible to run for President, and I expect that she will make the most of those six years.
I don't know a whole lot about her, but I love what I see.

I do, mostly but I think she needs to lay off twitter or at least limit herself.

I don't think that at all. She should keep doing exactly what she is doing.

Yea, it would be difficult for me to ever accept a politician who is addicted to Twitter...

Generally speaking, females empathize better than men and men are apparently better systemizers than are females. That being the case, it would seem that the world would be better served if females were the legislators and judges and males were the assistants and researchers.

It's been upside down for a long time.

My hope is that Pelosi will say that this will be her last run for speaker and she will help prepare someone younger to run next time.
I wonder why she hasn't been preparing other younger females for leadership positions over the past eight years as minority leader? It would have been the perfect time to do that. It's not like NP hasn't been often reminded of her age.
