This looks very, very bad. U.S. May Launch Strike If North Korea Reaches For Nuclear Trigger

Another week another missile.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/28/asia/north-korea-fires-unidentified-projectile/

Japan said the missile landed within its Exclusive Economic Zone, an area of water extended 200 nautical miles from the Japanese coast.
"This launch is extremely problematic act for the safety of airplanes and ships and is clearly violating the UN resolution. The repeated provocative acts by North Korea is absolutely not acceptable," Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said in a statement.

I'm really not sure what to make of North Korea. Is this dictator content to rule over his own people or does he have designs on conquering other nations (aside from South Korea)? Is he developing nuclear weapons to keep from being invaded (which is actually smart) or is he Hitler 2.0?

Well, Trump continues to talk tough and play up to his base, and bitch little hawks like Lindsey Graham are cheerleading him with a boner all the way.

That makes him sound like a normal politician. :)

Authority that comes from might.

Is North Korea (or any other country) entitled to have nuclear weapons? If it's OK for the U.S. to have nuclear weapons, then is it "only fair" to let all countries have them?

I foolishly didn't take his details, but a former British Ambassador to North Korea, stated that when he was in North Korea, that is basically what he was told. ( I think this was on CNN or the BBC a few weeks ago).

Apparently North Korea doesn't understand range safety.

Next time Japan should enforce it--when he's prepping a missile drop a Tomahawk on the launch site.

It is simple. MAD. Mutual Assured Destruction.

North Korea's leader wants to make sure South Korea and the US and allies never invade North Korea and end his regime.

Wouldn't you prefer a good game of chess?

It really kind of is a game of chess, with the people of Seoul as the pawns. Despite their shiny parades, North Korea's army is quite antiquated, being comprised mostly of Chinese and Soviet Union hardware. This applies to most of their military, including artillery, air force, and navy. So, in our military exercises we assume a more unconventional approach from North Korea, in response to attack from us or our allies. Their air force is so aged, for example, we doubt it would be at all effective in defending their airspace, and would probably be used to support their ground forces in a quick and damaging strike on Seoul. This is pretty much the scenario regardless of attack type. North Korea will focus on inflicting civilian causalities in South Korea as quickly as possible. The same goes with a "defensive" nuclear strike, it would most likely target South Korea, perhaps Japan. THIS is what keeps the rest of the world at bay.

I think Trump would prefer a game of Solitaire.

yup, hard to believe people tend to value their lives such that they don't want them utterly destroyed out of spite by a dictator.

Some estimates have North Korea losing 30% of their population die to US bombing.
Maybe they want to deter another episode like that?

KNOW THE FACTS: North Korea lost close to 30% of its population as a result of US bombings in the 1950s
The World is at a dangerous crossroads.

The US is seeking a pretext to wage war on North Korea.

North Korea is said to constitute a threat to Global Security.

From the Truman Doctrine to Obama. The history of the 1950s Korean war confirms that extensive war crimes were committed against the Korean people. As confirmed by the statement of General Curtis Lemay:

“Over a period of three years or so we killed off – what – twenty percent of the population.”1

North Korea lost close to thirty percent of its population as a result of US led bombings in the 1950s. US military sources confirm that 20 percent of North Korea’s population was killed off over a three period of intensive bombings:

“After destroying North Korea’s 78 cities and thousands of her villages, and killing countless numbers of her civilians, [General] LeMay remarked, “Over a period of three years or so we killed off – what – twenty percent of the population.” It is now believed that the population north of the imposed 38th Parallel lost nearly a third its population of 8 – 9 million people during the 37-month long “hot” war, 1950 – 1953, perhaps an unprecedented percentage of mortality suffered by one nation due to the belligerance of another.”2

During The Second World War the United Kingdom lost 0.94% of its population, France lost 1.35%, China lost 1.89% and the US lost 0.32%. During the Korean war, North Korea lost close to 30 % of its population.

These figures of civilian deaths in North Korea should also be compared to those compiled for Iraq by the Lancet Study (John Hopkins School of Public Health). The Lancet study estimated a total of 655,000 Iraqi civilian deaths, following the US led invasion (March 2003- June 2006).

It may well have started that way, but that doesn't excuse their own human rights abuse record. We're into our third great leader now since then, and I think those that run the regime know that at this point, because of what they've done, they must hold onto power at all costs or face a world in the modern era that is appalled at their crimes.

The world is appalled by the war crimes of the USA...isn't it? Isn't that true?

The USA is also overwhelmingly considered the greatest threat to world peace too.

Which Country Is The Greatest Threat to World Peace?

Where do you get the idea that "the world" is so concerned about North Korea?
You can only get this idea, I think, by insulating yourself from the world, and reading the crap that the Washington Post, the NewYork Times and Fox News dishes out.

The world is appalled by the war crimes of the USA...isn't it? Isn't that true?

Some are, yes. Is this a thread about US warmongering or North Korea? I realize in the world there are those that would blame the US for anything that happens anywhere in the world. There are those that would excuse any awful behavior by the US, and many fall in the middle. Regardless, if a country is afraid of another country, does that give their regime the right to abuse their own people, or do you deny that North Korea does this?

Where do you get the idea that "the world" is so concerned about North Korea?

Mostly from the people in South Korea, Japan, China, the Philippines, and the U.S. Also those that are concerned that North Korea would provide material or know-how for others to construct nuclear weapons. So, there may be a young couple in love in Madagascar that knows nothing about North Korea, but a lot of people in "the world" are quite concerned, myself among them.

You can only get this idea, I think, by insulating yourself from the world, and reading the crap that the Washington Post, the NewYork Times and Fox News dishes out.

Keep thinking then, because you're mistaken. In fact, I think if you're not concerned somewhat, you're probably insulated inside your "America is the cause of all the world's ills" bubble, a la Chomsky, or quite naive.

Exactly by what authority does the US get to tell other nations what they can test?

NATO... and other conventions as well, such as the Geneva convention... Preemptive strikes are a viable strategy, if done with international support.

Well, the US was busy defending democracy! Yeah, one could point out that Democracy in South Korea wouldn't exist for a few more decades, but you know... democracy!

Regardless, what is the point? Would you want to stay on topic? You could have mentioned that the Kims have been aiming for a nuclear weapon for several decades as a means to protect themselves from Western incursion. And it has worked. North Korea still has the same family in charge.

Regardless, the Kims aren't exactly the most stable of leadership dynasties and having a nuclear armed North Korea in Asia isn't a comforting prospect.
