This week in the strange death of America: Professor removed for using Mandarin word that sounds like a slur in English

Professor Patton was not fired - just replaced in a class. He was recently promoted to full professor in 2010 which suggests he is tenured.

Ah. Even less consequence then. What is Metaphor even going on about?

Excuse me. I did not say he was fired.

If you'd bothered to read the story, which you evidently have not, you'd see his students said sent a grievance letter with multiple lies to his bosses, he was suspended from giving the class and replaced, and the dean sent a mass email excoriating Patton.

Can you please read the story before you respond again. Your fill-in-the-gaps assumptions tell me a lot about you but they are not useful for actual good faith dialogue.

No, I mean, why should we even care about such a minor disciplinary action? Why do you care?

Imo, it is ridiculous that he was sanctioned for this.

It is not an easy thing to answer. I will guarantee you the first time I heard it - and if someone from china said "Nà ge (insert any english phrase here)" to a black person you would agree - it sounds like a racist statement.

I ought to be aware enough when I visit Iraq not to flash "ok" at someone. I ought be aware in America to not say "Nà ge" in the wrong context.

But with pause phrases, it can be harder. I get that.

Because he ought not have been disciplined at all, his actions were laudable (trying to be more inclusive), not deplorable, and the story is illustrative of the culture of fear, repression, and unreason that the Woke stasi has been able to create.

And the reaction on this board serves only to make it more troubling. You are entirely in lockstep agreement with the actions of the students and the dean, you didn't even bother to read the story let alone cast any kind of critical eye on anything, and yet you and men like you hold positions of power. And, worse, you are not even cravenly acquiescing to the demands of the Woke to save your own skin. You are the Woke.

I did, eventually, as the conversation progressed, look into more of the details. I would investigate in much more detail if I had anything to do with the case, or thought it in any way important. I appreciate your repeated description of me as a Man of Great Power and your great fear of my ruthless might, but they do not in fact consult me over disciplinary matters at fancy-dancey SoCal research universities. I take umbrage with the implication that there are other men like me, though. I am one of a kind, baby.
