Truck of peace hits New Orleans

Has anyone considered that since the man spent time in the military in Afghanistan that perhaps he suffered from severe PTSD, making him more vulnerable to becoming violent? War can mess with a person's brain and while only a small percentage of those with combat related PTSD become violent, it does happen.

Mental Health Effects of Serving in Afghanistan and Iraq

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were the longest combat operations since Vietnam. Many stressors face these Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) troops. One early study looked at the mental health of these Service members. The study asked Soldiers and Marines about war-zone experiences and about their symptoms of distress. Soldiers and Marines in Iraq reported more combat stressors than Soldiers in Afghanistan. This table describes the kinds of stressors faced in each combat theater in 2003:

Later research has confirmed that to date, troops who served in Iraq are more likely to report mental health problems than troops who served in Afghanistan. A body of research shows a strong link between level of combat stress and PTSD.

How does having served in OEF/OIF affect mental health?

Research on OEF/OIF Veterans suggests that 1 or 2 out of every 10 troops (or 10% to 18%) are likely to have PTSD after they return. In addition to PTSD, OEF/OIF Service members are at risk for other mental health problems. Although studies vary widely in terms of methods used, estimates of depression in returning troops range up to 1 of every 4 (or from 3% to 25%). Excessive drinking and use of tobacco among OEF/OIF Veterans may also be problematic. Service members also report concerns over conflicts with others.

We don't know enough as to why this man became so violent, but it could be that his war experience had something to do with it.

My extremely snide post #3 was mainly a response to a Xhit from Donald Trump claiming that the problem is US immigration laws allowing Muslim terrorists to come to this country.

It was on another forum.

He completely failed to mention that the perp in this heinous crime was a US citizen, born and raised in Texas, and a veteran of the US military.
His guns were probably legal.
Tom

Abrahamic religions are legal, too. Maybe we should ban them.

Of course. So many complex possibilities.

But no. All Muslims are to blame. It must be so comforting living in a simplified caricature of reality in which you don’t have to think, just passively accept right-wing memes. Thinking is hard!

Nothing like using murders to prop up the ole rage boner.

This is could be more complicated than average. This guy's journey to extremism (note almost all Muslims in America don't murder people) will be important.

If you've read or watched the news last night, you know that a lot more information came about regarding the man's issues. According to friends and family, he was a very quiet, kind man until very recently. He had a degree from the U. of Georgia in computer technology and supposedly was highly skilled. The husband of his ex-wife said he started acting "crazy" recently. In fact, they were so concerned that they would not allow him around his two daughters. He had gotten into dept and seemed very depressed, which was when he started posting that he wanted to kill. He was raised as a Christian and according to his brother had converted to Muslim some time ago. According to another person, he was a recent convert. According to a lady who lived in the same apartment building until recently, he frequently offered to help her with things and gave her some items when he moved out. To me, it sounds as if he had some terrible mental breakdown, similar to others who commit mass murders. Regardless if he got swept up into a cult associate with ISIS or not, he obviously suffered from some acute mental health breakdown. It's sad that we don't notice the danger the potential danger of these people and have a way to help them before they ruin their lives along with the lives of others.

This shows how much more complex the situation is, than what the thread title implies — that 1.8 billion Muslims are to blame for the actions of a single damaged man who happened to glom onto ISIS, when in fact, given his obvious mental disturbance, he could just as well have glommed onto anything, including evangelical Christianity, right-wing militia anti-government propaganda, the list goes on. But no, it’s so much easer for some people to Otherize, as I would call it, others who are not like them — and what better whipping boy than an entire world religion with all its adherents?

One can hold that Islam, as well as Christianity and most other religions, are nonsensical and frequently promote irrational and even dangerous acts, without pinning the bad acts of one on everyone he claimed to speak for. Now I course I expected Donald Trump, who is himself the leader of a dangerous and often lethal cult, to further demonize Islam as a result of this man’s acts. But no, his response surprised me. He demonized immigrants — even though the person who committed this act was not an immigrant!

But it’s all of a piece. Tie the acts of an individual to a larger group — even if he does not belong to that larger group! — as a way of stirring up hatred against vast multitudes of innocent people who then become ripe for dehumanization and ultimately slaughter. It’s exactly what Hitler did with the Jews — and what Israel is doing to Palestine.

I just read that Trump had written something on his stupid social media site, which I refuse to refer to by name, about the man being one of the criminal immigrants who come to the country to commit crimes. The idiot had to be corrected, since the guy was born here, raised here and educated here. Some people don't want to know they truth so they jump to conclusions before they have any facts, based on their own biases.

We are well aware that religion is often a great source of division, sometimes used to justify wars, but it's also been used for charity and good works, regardless of which mythology one adheres to.

Abrahamic religions are legal, too. Maybe we should ban them.
Heh
It gets better. Not only was he a native Texan, he was born and raised Christian.

I've gotta go with the severe mental health problems, likely made worse by military grade PTSD, hypothesis.

That surprised you?

Before it was reported, I almost made a snarky post about immigrants being an obvious danger, in response to the information in this thread about the perpetrator being a US born Texan.

I decided against it, largely on the grounds that it was inevitable that someone prominent would unironically make that claim. That the someone in question would be Trump or one of his cult was a short odds bet.

The Las Vegas cybertruck bomber was also a veteran, nearly 20 years.
article said:
Matthew Livelsberger has been named locally as the driver of the electric vehicle that blew up in the valet area outside the Trump International Hotel.

Livelsberger, a 37-year-old from Colorado, is thought to have rented the Cybertruck from Turo, a car leasing service, before packing it with firework-style mortars, camping fuel and canisters.
Let the CT's begin. This is getting peculiar.

To muddle stuff up even more
article said:
The explosion in Las Vegas is thought to have killed Livelsberger and injured seven others. Posts made on Facebook suggest he was a Trump supporter and a firework enthusiast, having once likened fireworks shows to the “sounds of battle”.
Coincidence can't be ruled out and maybe this guy just snapped, but the FBI is likely going to want to know if a third source paid for both rentals.

There was an explosion in Honolulu around the same time, but that was an actual firework accident that led to 3 being killed.

It surprised me only in that I thought he would take this opportunity to make another full-throated blowhard attack on “Islamic terrorism,” but I should never underestimate his stupidly in attacking a non-immigrant for being an immigrant in an attempt to demonize all immigrants. I should recall that his hobby horse was Muslims back in 2016, and now it is immigrants — brown ones only, of course.

What about some blame towards the people who caused this alleged PTSD in the first place!? Neo cons like Cheneys, Graham, Hillary, plus others who got us into these wars!

These same neo cons many who are still alive and well in congress making sure there are plenty of new wars like Ukraine to get their money and supplies to be fought!!?

Seems to me that the Democrats have taken up the banner of ptsd.

It is the MAGA Republicans who want peace with the rest of the world.

Doesn't surprise me. The radicals are very good at finding the lost souls and radicalizing them.

Trump is not even president yet and he is talking about taking over Greenland and grabbing back the Panama canal. During his first term he had to be dissuaded by non-lunatics in the room not to invade Mexico and Venezuela. He has supported Israeli genocide in Palestine and one of his mushwite sons has talked about how grand it would be to purge Gaza of Palestinians to build luxury condos there for the rich.

He doesn’t peace with the rest of the world. He wants to cater to the interests of his handler, Adolf Putin.

If you read my links, you would see that the highest rates of PTSD were from the war in Afghanistan, which was a war instigated by Republicans, even though a lot of Democrats went along with starting it. It turned out to be a huge mistake in so many ways. But, we have no idea if the killer's mental breakdown had anything to do with his military experience, although I did read that he spoke of it being very difficult being a veteran and getting aide. Since I've learned more about him, it sounds like his life was taking a turn for the worse and he had some type of mental crisis that precipitated his murderous act.

I know we're off topic, but I doubt the MAGA leader wants peace. He's already talking about taking over Greenland and the Panama Canal, and he is a big supporter of Israel, although he thinks he can stop Nettie's attack on civilians quickly. I hope he can, but it will surprise me if he gets it done. He's threatened to have immigrants shot while trying to come across the border, and/or put in prison camps etc. I don't see that as being peaceful. He's too crazy and incompetent to get much of his horrible threats accomplished but there is nothing peaceful about MAGA. Oh wait. I forgot. Jan. 6th 2021 was an act of love. /s

Why is it that Hillary Clinton is always the only Democrat named and blamed for the Iraq debacle when
29 (58%) of 50 Democratic senators voted for the resolution. Those voting for the resolution were: Sens. Baucus (D-MT), Bayh (D-IN), Biden (D-DE), Breaux (D-LA), Cantwell (D-WA), Carnahan (D-MO), Carper (D-DE), Cleland (D-GA), Clinton (D-NY), Daschle (D-SD), Dodd (D-CT), Dorgan (D-ND), Edwards (D-NC), Feinstein (D-CA), Harkin (D-IA), Hollings (D-SC), Johnson (D-SD), Kerry (D-MA), Kohl (D-WI), Landrieu (D-LA), Lieberman (D-CT), Lincoln (D-AR), Miller (D-GA), Nelson (D-FL), Nelson (D-NE), Reid (D-NV), Rockefeller (D-WV), Schumer (D-NY), and Torricelli (D-NJ).

And over 80% of the Republicans voted for it.
HDS?

Is the point of the OP that Texans don’t belong in the US?
No, but it shows that birth place is not necessarily indicative of identity.

Omar Mateen, the Afghan Islamic terrorist who shot up the Pulse nightclub was also born in the US. I guess to you he was a New Yorker ...
How was he Afghan if he was a US citizen?
