Meta dismisses Twitter's threat to sue over Threads | Fortune
In a letter Wednesday to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Alex Spiro, an attorney representing Twitter, accused Meta of unlawfully using Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property by hiring former Twitter employees to create a “copycat” app.

...
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone wrote Thursday on Threads: “No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee — that’s just not a thing.”

In the letter, which news website Semafor first reported Thursday, Spiro said Twitter “intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights” and noted the company’s right to seek civil remedies or a court injunction.

He said the letter marked a “formal notice” for Meta to preserve documents relevant for a potential dispute between the companies.

In a reply to a tweet about the possibility of legal action against Meta, Musk wrote: “Competition is fine, cheating is not.”

Grant Gulovsen: "This article reminded me that Meta launched Threads not to scoop up disgruntled Twitter users, but to scoop up disgruntled Twitter *advertisers*. Because of course that's all they care about. Duh." - Mastodon

Threads is All The Worst Parts of Twitter And Instagram in One Very Bad App - "The Facebook company’s new social platform is like Twitter, but for celebrities, brands, and annoying people."
The myriad problems with Twitter have been well documented, and the launch of Threads is proof that Meta smells blood in the water. The app is a direct response to the mass-exodus of advertisers under Musk, whose increasingly blatant transphobia and racist conspiracy-peddling has left many users of the dying platform pining for a social app that is not overrun with Nazis and QAnon conspiracists.

Meta’s sales pitch for Threads seems to be simply that it’s not Twitter. It’s a text-based social network that is not actively falling apart, created by a monopolistic tech company known for privacy abuses and run by the second worst guy on earth. Even by these extremely low standards, it is not good.

To understand Threads, just imagine all the worst parts of Instagram and Twitter. The interface looks and feels like Instagram’s comments section, and there is no way to view posts chronologically on the timeline—or even to limit your feed to posts from accounts you follow. Instead, users see text posts based on what an invisible algorithm determines is most likely to make them engage and stay on the app, so they will see more ads.
I concede that Threads needs a *lot* of improvement.

@gulovsen There is no way Zuck/Meta could siphon off Twitter users with regular Facebook (super tired) or Instagram (literally and figuratively image-bound). A reskinned Instagram client masquerading as a new app? Seems kinda perfect in theory, if only to troll the owner of Twitter.

The fact that there's somebody who makes Zuck look reasonable and responsible -- taking advantage of that is a slam dunk
Great assessment.

Twitter traffic is 'tanking' as Meta's Threads hits 100 million users

The booming growth on Threads is helped by the fact that it is tied to an existing social network, Meta’s Instagram. Users can sign up with their existing handles on Instagram and are able to retain some of their following as others sign up for the app.

...
The app still has lots of room to grow, having not yet launched in Europe, where Mosseri said there is still some regulatory complexity to navigate.

...
Musk and Zuckerberg were also taking shots at one another over the weekend, as Zuckerberg mocked Musk’s tweet style and Musk called Zuckerberg a derogatory name.

Meta's Twitter Rival Threads Overtakes ChatGPT as Fastest-Growing Platform
The app also does not yet have a direct messaging function and lacks a desktop version that certain users, such as business organizations, rely on.

It also currently lacks hashtags and keyword search functions, which limits both its appeal to advertisers and its utility as a place for following real-time events like users frequently do on Twitter.
Desktop version - does that mean desktop-platform apps? A web version? Both?
Currently, there are no ads on the Threads app and Zuckerberg said the company would only think about monetization once there was a clear path to 1 billion users.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri said last week Meta was not trying to replace Twitter and that Threads aimed to focus on light subjects like sports, music, fashion and design.

He acknowledged that politics and hard news are inevitably going to show up on Threads, in what would be a challenge for the app pitching itself as the "friendly" option for public discourse online.

However,
Meta's Threads not available in the EU due to legal complexity
  • Instagram chief Adam Mosseri told The Verge that its new Threads product is not yet available in the European Union.
  • Mosseri cited “complexities with complying with some of the laws coming into effect next year.”
  • His comment seems to reference the Digital Markets Act, a set of competition rules for the largest digital gatekeepers, including many U.S. tech giants such as Meta.

Post.news has an interesting feature: a micropayment system of "points": Post Points & Tipping: an overview | Post Help Center

Each point costs 1 cent: $0.01, and one can do a lot of things with post.news points.

The most obvious is paying to read paid posts. One can put paywalls on one's posts, with only the first few lines of them available for free. However, these paywalls are very low ones so far. I've found numbers of points 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 12, 25, 39, usually at the low end.

One can also tip users of the system, sending them points. Not surprisingly, one can buy points in the system and also cash out.

Will Elon Musk want a similar system for Twitter?

Twitter 1.0 is dying. His hopes are 2.0 where he reinvents already existing websites and hopes people start using his.

Threads User Count Tracker
These counts were originally generated using the Threads account numbers shown on Instagram pages. After META stopped disclosing user count numbers on July 11, 2023, we have switched over to using an approximation method based on a sampling of follower counts.
Signups are now much slower than in the first few days, but it is still impressive how much Threads has grown despite its numerous deficiencies.

RFK Jr. got a shitload of views, comments, and retweets on an asinine MTG style Russian propaganda post about Ukraine. I’m sure dumb shit like that will bring the ad revenue in.
