The United States and the Taliban signed a historic deal Saturday aimed at winding down America’s longest war.

With Secretary of State Mike Pompeo watching, U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad and the Taliban’s political chief, Abdul Ghani Baradar, signed a deal in Doha, Qatar, to begin the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

In exchange, the Taliban is assuring it will not allow Afghanistan to be used by terrorists to attack the United States.

Despite the milestone, a long road remains before peace in Afghanistan, including intra-Afghan talks, where the entire deal still has the potential to collapse.

he agreement also ushers in the start of talks to reconcile the Taliban and the Afghanistan government. Talks are scheduled to start March 10.

The intra-Afghan talks will be launched with a prisoner release, according to Saturday’s deal. The Taliban will have 5,000 prisoners released, while the Afghan government side will have 1,000. Remaining prisoners will be released in three months.

Skeptics of Trump’s efforts have long warned that the intra-Afghan stage would be the hardest, as the Taliban has been loath to sit down with a government it sees as a puppet of the United States.

I know one of Chump's campaign promises was to end The Forever War, in his first 100 days, but did anyone get the impression he meant diplomatic discussion with Taliban, and making them pinkie-swear not to terrorist ever again?

This is a good thing, or at least, as good a result as you could realistically expect. Afghanistan has been a clusterfuck from the beginning, and occupation was clearly a mistake.

oh, yeah, sure.
It just seems tgat war, and diplomacy, are like healthcare. Complicated. More complicated than some people may have thought when they were tweeting cwitiques of their predecessor.

No biggie - get them to pinkie-swear and call it good. Don't forget to wash your hands afterward.
Love letters to ensue.

Sounds like Nixon's Peace With Honor withdrawal from Vietnam.

He came up with the term Vietnamization. Training ARVN to take full control of security. Nobody really expected South Vietnam to stand on its own. It never had a functioning government. The people were divided. We pulled out and NV took over. Probably better for them in the long run.

Like Nixon Trump will declare victory as it falls apart when we leave. Not that I am saying we should stay, we should not.

Of course I have no govt intelligence, but it seems to me as it is there is plenty of room and ways for extremists to plan acts against us. All's we are doing is creating new generations of America haters.

Deja vu all over again. We are still not learning from our history and failures.

Next up Iraq. We conceded Iraq to Iran by removing Hussein.

Trump Administration Signs Historic Peace Deal with Taliban!

https://www.npr.org/2020/02/29/8105...-after-nearly-2-decades-of-war-in-afghanistan

"Under the terms of the deal, the U.S. commits to withdrawing all of its military forces and supporting civilian personnel, as well as those of its allies, within 14 months. The drawdown process will begin with the U.S. reducing its troop levels to 8,600 in the first 135 days and pulling its forces from five bases."

"The rest of its forces, according to the agreement, will leave "within the remaining nine and a half months."

No other administration was able to get this done! This is historic!

Obama should have done this in 2009. He had 70% public support for withdrawing. Likely what stopped him was political cowardice. He didn't want Republicans calling him weak on terror. So we got a decade of wasting lives and treasure, mostly for nothing. Fast forward to 2020, and it's strange as hell that this doesn't work the other way around. But then the Democrat leadership is a joke.

Lest anyone thinks Trump deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for this (he certainly does), the lunatic tried to start a fucking war with Iran. IRAN.

John Bolton blasts Trump's 'Obama-style' Taliban deal

"Signing this agreement with Taliban is an unacceptable risk to America's civilian population," Bolton tweeted on Saturday.

"This is an Obama-style deal," Bolton said, referring to Trump's predecessor. "Legitimizing Taliban sends the wrong signal to ISIS and al Qaeda terrorists, and to America's enemies generally."

A former Trump staffer being quoted on Fox News that Trump is acting like Obama. I'm sure Trump will take this with the maturity and grace we have come to expect from such an accomplished statesmen.

Seven hours behind the times, champ. Also this is about as "historic" as Trump getting Iran or North Korea to stop their nuclear programs, providing a long lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis, and ensuring the Kurdish people live in peace without fear of oppression.

America's longest war. I'm willing to thank Mr. Trump for this.

If done correctly, then yes Trump definitely deserves credit for it. However, his track record in foreign affairs suggests it's going to be a rushed job, glossing over important details just so Trump can sign something for the photos and say, "Mission Accomplished!" without a shred of irony or self awareness. For the moment, it looks like rump ending "America's longest War" will happen 6 weeks after his wall will be built, which will happen five years after hell freezes over.

[some stupid shit John Fugelsang tweeted]

What exactly is "racist" about calling Taliban our enemies? "Taliban" is a jihadist organization, not a race.

The Old Trump was right, the New Trump is wrong. The Taliban deal is rotten - it gives away the country to the Sunni version of weird beards.

Pretty soon Trumpo will be referring to them as great, unless he can't expand his brand there of course.

Did you read my post?

Thank god.

It's a great day for Afgan women and those who value human rights now that those Americans will leave!

Was it worth the debt we ran up which will take generations o pay off and the causualties both us, or allies, and civilians suffered? The idea of rights IMO was a post invasion justification.

Should we invade Saudi Arabia or just ignore rights there as we always do.
