US embassies to contractors worldwide: Cancel any diversity programs or risk going unpaid​

US embassies have sent letters to contractors in their host countries demanding they certify that they do not run any diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs that violate President Donald Trump’s executive order against race- and sex-based preferences.


All contractors of the US Department of State must also agree that such confirmation is “material for purposes of the (US) government’s payment decision,” according to a certification form sent out by the US embassy in Denmark and seen by CNN.

The Belgian government said in a statement that it was investigating “the legal consequences” for the companies that had received the letters.


“The question is not only a matter of principle but also of legal relevance: The US Embassy must comply with Belgian law in its actions. If contracts are terminated merely because a company is committed to diversity and inclusion, this could constitute a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” the statement said.

Imagine if Saudi Arabia told all of its embassies around the world to demand that any and all of their suppliers (electricity, water, sewer, etc...) may not employ any women or that all women employed must be fully covered head to toe through out their business, even globally.

What incredible idiocy and pure asshatery for the Trump administration to think that they can dictate what local laws and cultural norms their suppliers in other countries follow.

It will be very interesting if the US Embassy in Paris for example finds it's electricity, water and sewer turned off, no trash pickup. No cleaning services. No paper plates.

The claim they make about DEI is that it is anti-merit. As the European companies employ based on merit (unlike Republicans), they can truthfully reply that they don't employ based on DEI, even if they have a policy that is similar to DEI.
Of course, their governments will say that they don't have to respond, as is an illegal demand.
