My point was that both are extremist groups. The chicken and egg questions is secondary to the fact that pox should be on both their houses.

However, if you want to play that game, Nazis pretty much arose, at least as a credible force, in response to communism. Communists took over a major power in 1917 and communists managed to establish short-lived "council republics" in places such as Bavaria in the aftermath of WWI.

A big reason why Hitler managed to gain power is that many in the German establishment thought he would be a bulwark against the specter of communism. That just shows you the dangers of trying to drive out the Devil with Beelzebub.
