a very subdued film that was largely style over substance, but not exactly in a bad way - it was just a very simple and rather boilerplate rehash of a classic sci-fi genre morality play about AI.
but, it was a well done boilerplate rehash of a classic sci-fi genre morality play about AI, so overall it worked out pretty well.
looked great, good effects and camera work, and i don't know if it was intentional or not but it raised 50 additional questions apart from the ones brought up by the plot, some of them being glaring plot-holes and some of them just being incidental bits of fascinating observation.
the film actually got me to thinking about AI in an analytical way that most movies about AI don't manage to do, so it was definitely a success in that regard.

The Babadook
At first I thought it was a psychological drama. Overworked mother with extremely challenging son, so of course she's going a little nuts.
But then things get weird and then frightening.
I saw elements of The Shining and The Exorcist.
Very good performances by the lead actors. The ending is twist after twist.
I recommend it.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

While this one lacks the snap and periodic brilliance of The Avengers or the pure sense of fun of Guardians of the Galaxy, it's a well-executed action thriller and a solid addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chris Evans' performances as the Captain have grown on me over the course of three films and Anthony Mackie is always a welcome addition to any cast. And anyone who, like me, loves their Action Girls will not be disappointed in that component of this one--Black Widow gets her biggest and most complex role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, while Maria Hill returns for a couple of impressive scenes and we have our first introduction to Sharon Carter. A downside, at least for me--I simply am not impressed with Robert Redford's attempt at portraying a villainous mastermind.

I imagine the initial pitch went something like this:
"Okay, so we remake Groundhog Day with Tom Cruise. Instead of a romantic comedy set in Punxsutawney, its an action flick where the protagonist relives the same day fighting aliens. Oh, and like in all his movies, Tom requests at least one scene where he rides a motorcycle."
Funny thing is, it actually works. Really well in fact.

The Seven Five 8/10
Documentary about corrupt NYPD officers in Brooklyn.
They appear to relive their cop/gangster experiences through telling the story.
I suspect some things were exaggerated and other sordid details left out, it seems that the movie makers want us to like these guys. They are out to impress and it's an absorbing tale.

A film about reincarnation and a girl being haunted by her past lives. Could have worked, but horrible horrible execution. It´s nothing wrong with the actors or the shooting of it. It´s pretty. The problem is the script. I just didn´t care about anything. There was no sense of conflict or urgency. No questions awoken in the viewer. Just a series of events. I couldn´t stay awake until the end. So I don´t know how it ends, and I don´t care.

I´ve actually done AI at uni once upon a time. They´d doen their homework for the film. The film could be summed up as en exploration of Searle´s Chinese Room. They explained the philosophy without it getting boring and lectury. I liked that. A very pretty film. Good acting.

The Babadook, 7/10: I watched this movie on the back of your recommendation. It's a decent movie, the acting from the two main characters is superb. Some Kubrick/Shining for sure and The Exorcist too.

as a non-stop popcorn movie action thrill ride: 8.5/10
within the broad scope of film in general: maybe a 5/10
okay so how to explain this in terms of a review...
if you're someone who can sit down in a movie theater and generally get into what you're watching and just kinda go with it, this is an edge of your seat pulse pounder from start to finish.
it's extraordinarily thin on plot, but in more of a sparse way than a stupid way - it's basically, this is what would happen if terry gilliam made a remake of Vanishing Point.
yes, that is actually an amazingly perfect way to describe this movie... if terry gilliam did car chase movie.

So this is one of those movies where you can't actually point to anything that could be considered "Good" or "Watchable" but where at some point it all comes together in a way that is at least somewhat entertaining
The acting, the plot, the effects, the cinematography etc just everything is a hilarious mess
But I can't say I was ever bored or annoyed by any of it
And overall I wouldn't say anyone should go out of their way to see it, but if nothing else is on..........you could do worse

Saw Chicken Run again. When I first saw this film it was underwhelming. I was expecting more slapstick in the Wallace and Gromit fashion from the folks at Aardman. What I saw instead was a well made film, with good voice acting. Perhaps the comparison is it is like Coming to America. An Eddie Murphy starring role in a movie that was a movie first and a comedy second.
56 or so years later, I really do appreciate the film more. It is a film that stands on its own very well. Cliche only in the sense of its homage to WWII prison films. 3 of 4

The Red Violin - 9/10
A haunting story a red violin and it's journey from the hands of its creator to a modern day auction house three centuries later. The music is lovely, emotional and deep. It's the sort of whimsical film that I love. Brought me to tears more than once. Bravo.

Okay, I only got about fifteen minutes into this film before turning it off. It was recommended to me by friends, but the movies takes place with Tom Hardy's character in his car handling various critical situations by phone. For the entire duration. I simply did not have the patience for it.

I just realised that I´ve watched a bunch of documentaries, and forgotten to mention them here.
Last days of Vietnam 7/10
Standard Vietnam fare. But with the added bonus of zeroing in on just one tiny facet of Vietnam. It was a lot about the practical difficulties of evacuating the US embassy.
Bue Note - A story of modern Jazz 8/10
If you care about modern jazz, this is the story. It´s just straight up about Blue Note. Nothing fancy.

About Kurt Cobain. Either the documentary was badly made or something, because I just like Kurt Cobain less and less the more I watched. Was he really just a total wanker? I doubt it.

About kink.com. I love their films, so I should have loved the documentary. I just found it boring. I think the problem with it is that it tried really really hard to remove the kinky. It tried to make it feel as normal as possible. But it´s kinky. It´s only fun because it isn´t normal. There has to be some sort of fucked-upness, or it´s boring. We all know that fundamentally all sex is just the rubbing of parts. The rest is in the head. This documentary seems to have forgotten this.

I saw this ages ago. But I just thought I´d mention it here due to the kink.com documentary. This is a documentary on kink-porn that is well made. An excellent documentary about Insex. The interviews with the porn actresses ten years on. When they´re asked if they regret it we get interesting answers.
Finding Fela! 10/10
A documentary about the outrageous and larger than life Fela Kuti. He was a famous musician as well as a Nelson Mandela type guy. He was the symbol of the fight against ethnic oppression in Nigeria, but broke a few too many social and sexual taboos for him to really be embraced. An interesting fella.
On Tender Hooks 10/10
This is about a movement of running steel hooks through your skin and hanging by them. I sat in shock and disbelief throughout the entire documentary. No horror movie can compare to the horror of this documentary.
If anybody can recommend a documentary about early farming and Sumeria/Assyria let me know. There´s loads of documentaries. But they tend to be very superficial.
