Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

Companion

Thriller about a weekend getaway at a remote cabin turns to chaos when it's revealed that one of the guests -- a subservient android built for human companionship -- has gone haywire.

Lots of plot twists and turns making for a very entertaining movie. 7/10.
Is it different from all the “cabin in the woods” movies where one of the human guests goes haywire?

Very much so. It's no Ex Machina but it's worth a watch.

ON THE BEACH (1959)
Set in 1964, just after WWIII. A raidoactive cloud is circulating the Earth.
The remains of the US navy, one sub, retreats to Austrailia to wait out the end of civilazition.
No action, all drama. I first saw it in the '60s. It hit me fairly hard.
Still depressing today. I rate it 9/10.

The Bride

I declare this movie:

1. Un.

2. Fucking

3. Watchable
Told ya. People either love it or hate it.
It felt like a cheese grater on my eyes and nails in my ears from the opening scene until the time I turned it off 30 minutes later. I'm not alone in this. The movie is ultimately expected to lose ~$90 million.

Saw The Death of Robin Hood which was a good film, if you survive the first half hour and don't wonder too much why they ended it the way they did.

Also The Christophers which was really lovely.

Hokum

This is from the same guy who directed and wrote Caveat and Oddity. I'd hoped that with maturity and experience that this guy would've grown out of the painful convenience writing he does. Unfortunately, that's not the case. To me, it's just cheating. There's no need to think about how the protagonist or some other character is going to get out of a sticky situation, something external will come along and take care of things.

The police have searched the land for an unfairly accused killer but can't find him. However, the main character needs to find him and voila, said accused character is in his van just down the road from the setting in which the film takes place. This type of convenience takes place at least 5 times throughout crucial points in the movie.

It's galling. How such terrible writing gets such a pass from fans and critics is beyond me.

The good is that it's very atmospheric and the cinematography is often really good.

3/10

You remind me. I saw Wolfram a few weeks ago.

Great film. Well worth watching.

But decisions were made for ease of filming that made the plot unbelievable. Annoying.

Project Hail Mary

Some sort of space bacteria are eating the sun and the earth is doomed. A sun 11 light years away is not being eaten so Earth sends three people to find out why. How is this supposed to save Earth? Hell if I know.

At times, the movie tries to be funny with Ryan Gosling playing a nerdy scientist but also tries to be serious. It's just a poorly done combo that never really fits together. I'd looked forward to seeing this one but ended up sorely disappointed.

4/10

Lighthearted humor given the subject matter was a bit of a disappointment. The book was fine but might be ruined to to read after the fact with the movie's images filling one's imagination.

I think the sun they were sent to was infected but had immunity to the pathogen, so they were meant to discover why that sun was the exception. The movie fell short of the book, which was far better.

That wasn't the point. Just an excuse to meet an alien.
You might like the book.
That is why I didn't see Interstellar, Going to another star takes too long to do any good.

I find reading a book first, sometimes the movie disapoints.
But seeing the movie first never ruins a good book for me. And I get to enjoy a good story twice.
Project Hail Mary is a good book. I recomend it.

Planet of the Vampires (1965)
Said to be the insperation for ALIEN.
Not as hokey as the title suggests. Original title: Planet of Terror (in Italian). I give it 5/10
Dialog is a little stilted and full of BS tecnobabble. which might be explained by the twist ending. Spoiler -nobody in the movie is from Earth-

Fun fact: In the film someone uses a flatbed scanner to copy a document ... 10 years before scanners were invented.
And it's faster than my scanner.

Strays was hilarious. It had Mr. Sohy and me laughing hysterically during most of the silly movie. If you need a good laugh and love dogs, this is the movie for you. If you hate really silly movies, don't watch it.

Plot

Reggie is a naive Border Terrier who lives with his abusive owner Doug. When Reggie inadvertently destroys Doug's bong, Doug makes several attempts to ditch Reggie. Abandoned in the city three hours away, Reggie meets a street-wise dog named Bug who teaches him how to be a stray after he defends him from a Rottweiler and a Dobermann. After a night with Bug and his friends, an Australian Shepherd named Maggie and a therapy Great Dane named Hunter, Reggie realizes that Doug does not love him. He decides to get revenge by biting off Doug's penis, and the other strays accompany him for support. However, as Reggie has never been that far from Doug before, they must rely on landmarks he saw, including a "large hamster wheel" (a carnival ferris wheel), a "giant cone" (a hill), and "the Devil in the Sky" (a picture of a postman on a billboard).

OK. A lot of LOLs, but the poop and penis stuff was a bit much. Hey, it's Will Ferrell what would you expect. The end was funny.

Yeah, I think I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than watch this movie.

But, I loved it so much that I watched it twice and Mr. Sohy laughed along with me. My neighbors are going to watch it, so if they do, I'll see if they enjoyed it as much as we did.
