I'm starting this thread to celebrate the colorful and interesting candidates for California's 2026 Gubernatorial Election. The ballot has been certified, so technically any of these candidates could, in theory, become the next chief executive of the Golden State, the US' best country.

Such as:

Livingforgod Andcountry Demott
(website)
No party preference

This very proud Christian was born in Redding California, the great metropolis of the far north, but these days lives in the quaint former mining town of Twain Harte up in the Mother Lode foothills. Livingforgod started a successful pest control business in his youth, but had a change of heart and faith, and set aside that heady life of business and fame to become a military chaplain, personally saving thousands of souls from an eternity in Hell. As governor, he promises to:
  1. Create a volunteer militia at the state level to defend the state against outside attacks foreign or domestic.
  2. Expand safe firearm training for cops.
  3. Restore the family as the primary source of moral guidance for the young.
  4. Seize federal lands throughout the state and use them to establish a fully sovereign state-owned energy economy.
  5. Create a State Bank and a Sovereign Wealth fund to replace federal income tax and its functions.
  6. Create a fully independent educational system within which parents have absolute authority over curriculum and all federal oversight or support are rebuffed.
  7. Create a paid force akin to the CCC of old to oversee environmental protection and economic development, again with the goal of replacing and rebuffing federal agencies such as Fish and Wildlife, the EPA, and so forth.
  8. Outlawing masks altogether for police and federal officers.
  9. In general, taking extrene measure to protect our Constitutional rights against their abrogation by the Federal government.
Fun fact: Livingforgod is a distant cousin of mine! We are both direct descendants of Samuel Fuller of the Mayflower settlement.

Thoughts? Should California become a functionally sovereign state, effectively at war with Washington DC but more in charge of its own destiny than it has ever been? Can seemingly socialistic means like a nationalized bank and state-owned energy companies be used to achieve libertarian ends? Does Livingforgod have a chance of taking the seat? You've got to admit, he has a website. Which as you are about to see in this thread, is never a given in this race.

Perhaps we should turn our attention to a Democrat. Such as:

Matthew Chase Levy

is a phycisist, a young guy from Rice who won a bunch of awards while in school and was recognized as a Newton Fellow by the Royal Society for his work involving nonlinear quantum vacuums and lasers. Lots of lasers. Rerturning home to Lawrence Livermore, he did work on nuclear fusion and lasers. Lots of lasers. These days, he's a startup maven, starting company after company chasing various Silicon Valley trends such as AI and, you guessed it, more lasers. He's presumably (?) running for governor to try and attract attention to his latest corporate project, a venture capital firm called AE Blue. He's still chasing the fusion thing, and wants California to be its creche. He lets AI touch up all of his campaign images to make him look like a plastic doll, and it really annoys me.

Website: https://matthewchaselevy.com/

In terms of policy, he offers a "roadmap" on various issues that also looks AI generated, at least to my trained but cynical professorial eye. I will therefore leave it to you, gentle readers, to read that stuff if you like. If he wants ME to summarize his views, he can write them out himself. Unsurprisingly, the AI thinks that AI is brilliant and should absolutely be a priority for California's investment portfolio. Also fusion. And lasers.

I jest, but this joke of a trust fund baby scientist would probably be a better governor than whoever actually wins. That said, there isn't a snowball's chance in hell, and it's pretty clear that he is under no delusions about this, he is just in it for the clicks.

Thoughts? Should California elect a classroom-brilliant young venture capitalist to head our civilian government? Is cold fusion a thing? Will Livermore steal back the thunder it has lost to European labs in recent years? Is running for governor a good way to inexpensively goad people into looking up the website for your venture capital project?
