Yet another war, this time with Iran

Pentagon fires Stars and Stripes leaders who criticized DOD’s interference. The Defense Department earlier this year railed against the publication, which has long enjoyed editorial independence, as “woke.”

The Pentagon on Friday fired the publisher and the editor in chief of Stars and Stripes, the military newspaper funded by the Department of Defense that has long enjoyed editorial independence from the government, according to the publication’s outgoing editor in chief.

The Defense Department sent a separation notice to publisher Max Lederer, who announced his retirement this week, telling staff in a parting note he had disagreed with decisions from Pentagon top brass.

Under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the publication’s independence has come under threat during the second Trump administration as top Pentagon leaders have derided the newspaper as “woke.”

Erik Slavin, the editor in chief, said he and reporter Lara Korte also received separation notices Friday.

Well, it looks like the USA is headed to a war with Iran, even though there's very little support for such an action. Most of the support is in the defense industry or the entrenched government, because they are still pissed that the Iranians overthrew the Shah.

Trump is more aggressive in foreign policy this term than his previous, which is very unfortunate.

I think that going to war with Iran is a really, really bad idea.
Joe Biden, the bigger warmonger. I remember you saying that.

So the whole, we are bombing them into submission thing is gone... again for the umpteenth time. Now we are go to sanction them into oblivion... and when we say "them", we mean "other countries" that aren't "Iran" because we already have sanctions high on Iran. We are half a year into a quagmire the Trump Admin has no political skill to extricate themselves from. All they have is denial, bombastic bravado, and paper tigers.

I watched a video about the history of Iran. In the 5000 years the Persian people have withstood many wars and revolution. They survived.
They will probably survive this. They are very proud not to be Arabs.
I worked with an Iranian man once, Sharam, he was smart and planned to be an engineer like his father. But they were Baha'i so they had to flee during the revolution. The people are great; they just have a crazy religion. Sharam means Quite King.

We just "virtually" took out Kharg island.

I saw a screen shot, it was seemingly fake on the surface, but Jebus. The Trump Admin is just posting North Korean level propaganda at this point.

This whole thing has been like an idiot-created maze where the entrance is also the exit.

The very best outcome at this point would be a return to the way things were prior to what has to be the most predictable American blunder since W/Cheney decide to invade Iraq.

We won't know about that point of no return for a few years. As things are, the Trump Admin is attempting to fuck with this upcoming election by restricting access to mail-in ballots without any notice (with ZERO protest from the GOP). So, that isn't exactly good evidence for, we are returning to a more normal day.

Basically, Iran is now literally dug in. They have stored weapons underground in several mountains with multiple entrance and exit points. Cheap Shaheen drones can easily keep the Strait closed to traffic for months. Trump's administration had been thoroughly warned that we would run out of expensive defensive munitions and that killing off the top leadership would just lead to a younger more radical leadership. That leadership has said that they can't negotiate with Trump and will wait to see who takes power in 2029. There is light at the end of the tunnel. In 2029. That's where it appears to be right now.

The US has blocked Iran from shipping goods in and out by sea, so they will have to make do with land routes into their largest trading partners--Russia and China. Apparently, the leadership in Iran feels it can take the pain being felt by other people in their country. Those people were supposed to rise up and overthrow the people holding all the guns.

That'd be crap though. Trump should be responsible for fixing this. The GOP (presuming a Democrat wins a presumed 2028 election) would say the Democrats gave too much and dealt with the terrorists.

There is no hardship the Iranian leadership is not willing to let their people suffer from.

Iran and Russia both border the Caspian sea for trade.

Speaker Johnson defensive about his past projections about the Iran war, including repeatedly saying it’s just a skirmish that would be over in short order and cause just a “temporary blip” in gas prices.More than six months in, asked him if the public should judge him on his past projections that were off base?“That is one of the stupidest questions you've ever asked,” he snapped.Johnson said: “I have nothing to do with the prosecution of the war across the globe.” Asked the speaker about him selling this to the public and the cost of war to taxpayers:

Compared to first term Trump, he was. And second term Trump is also a bigger warmonger than first term Trump.

Agreed. And to make it worse he pisses off our allies. And then wonders why they don't rush to our defense (demining the strait for example). This Iranian war is a disaster.

The majority of US bases in the area have been destroyed by Iranian attacks. The troops that manned those bases have been pushed back and dispersed. The US no longer has the means to defend Gulf states from attacks by drones and missiles. Naval forces have also been repositioned outside of Iran's kill zone. We are at a standoff, and there is no sign of an end in sight. Putin, Xi, Kim could not have asked for a better US president.

And as Trump thinks he is the only person on Earth who knows how to escalate a situation, the Houthis are complicating things and widening the Iran "War" theater into the Red Sea.
article said:
The Houthis took Mokha on Thursday and on Friday captured Mayun, also known as Perim, off Yemen's coast, two officials said, in a swift advance that extends their reach near one of the world's key commercial lanes.

The strait had been a vital route for crude oil supplies from Saudi Arabia to Asia after shipping through the Strait of Hormuz was restricted due to threat of Iranian attack — until Houthi targeting of Saudi tankers largely ended that safety valve.

The Houthi advance is focusing renewed attention on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and further risks to shipping there, despite efforts by the Houthis to reassure shipowners that vessels other than those covered by their embargo on Saudi-linked shipping remain safe.
Certainly, it isn't as simple as that to shut things down, but Trump is really screwing up our ability to militarily address this. The US wasted a lot of munitions to destroy worthless stuff in Iran.

And a major (?) Saudi pipeline by the Red Sea has been shutdown due to an attack.
