The Bible was written by very bad people. It is full of objectively immoral things like instructions on the right and wrong way to beat slaves to death. (And no, changing the word "slave" to "employee" does not transform that passage from an immoral instruction to a moral instruction.)

But the man in the pulpit simply repeats the assertion that religion makes people more moral without offering any real proof in support. Maybe some cherry-picked anecdotal evidence. Through repetition, the claim becomes fact. Once people assume the Bible is moral, then they will make whatever rationalization they can for Jesus' endorsement of slavery or Jesus' promise to tear families apart, or Jesus' parable-delivered command that Christians kill non-Christians.

I'm not prepared to say that Christians are inherently evil (at least, I'm pretty sure the kind of evil they push into the world would probably still exist in some form without their religion), but that special book is definitely immoral. If I didn't understand how repetition and peer pressure work, I would have a very difficult time understanding how anyone could regard the Bible as a moral guide.

It's more accurate to say that the Bible gives the slaver permission to beat a slave to the point of death. Exodus 21: 20-1, rather a well-known passage except in Sunday worship. If the slaver delivers a death blow and the slave drops dead, he or she must be punished. How? Not specified -- surely an indication that it's not a major deal. But if the slaves lingers a few days and then dies -- again, from a hellacious beating -- there's no liability for the slaver, because the slave is property. Beautiful morality, isn't it? On the focus of the OP, the list of capital offenses, I remember asking a fundie friend about the death penalty for sassy adolescent sons. Your entitled to your belief , like for example in your previous post " religion's hatred for non-whites", I believe you have churches with non-white congregations (and choirs) and Islam /Hinduism/ Hispanic-Christians etc.. seems imo to be a non-white majority in those group(s) (to state the obvious).
